Finnegan Posted 4 December 2006 Posted 4 December 2006 This already been done? I'm blind if it has. What a joke. The best we can come up with is a boxer who "succesfully moved up a weight class", a driver who's won ONE race in 113 as a highlight, a gymnast, a ****' show jumper who's only there because she's royal, a DARTS player for God's sakes and a golfer who, fair play, played through the death of his wife - but still, GOLF? And Andy Murray? Toss off you grumpy, useless jock, he's completely over-rated. Just because you're better than Tim Henman you're not a great tennis player! And personality? WHAT personality? Drone with a fooking perm! If Calzaghe doesn't at least make the podium, there's no justice.
Milky Posted 4 December 2006 Posted 4 December 2006 tim henman was a great tennis player. Always In the top 10 in the world for 7 seasons or something. Highest ranking of 4.
Finnegan Posted 4 December 2006 Author Posted 4 December 2006 Denial ain't a river in Egypt, sweetheart.
lookwhaticando Posted 4 December 2006 Posted 4 December 2006 It'll have to be the posh horse riding bird, then. Or whatever it is that Royal girl does, anyhoo.
OBO Posted 4 December 2006 Posted 4 December 2006 Andy Murray would win (Most Annoying) Sports Personality Of The Year. He was such an annoying, big headed tit on Soccer AM.
The People's Hero Posted 4 December 2006 Posted 4 December 2006 He can't post on FT during work hours.... but it gets to 5.01 pm and here he is! Good day Fezzeridge?
Fez of Mahrez Posted 4 December 2006 Posted 4 December 2006 He can't post on FT during work hours.... but it gets to 5.01 pm and here he is! Good day Fezzeridge? The day was Andy Johnson from 6.30am and 5pm was a decent pass.
vanfox12 Posted 5 December 2006 Posted 5 December 2006 it has to be joe calzaghe It won't happen because his fights are on Sky and not the BBC.
Milky Posted 5 December 2006 Posted 5 December 2006 Denial ain't a river in Egypt, sweetheart. At his best he was world class. This country stinks, though he doesn't help himself with that pathetic little "fist pump" etc..
l444ry Posted 6 December 2006 Posted 6 December 2006 And how come Tony McCoy isn't in the running? Champion jockey year in and year out and risking his life every day. Possibly the greatest jump jockey of all time. And yet Monty Panesar and Phil Taylor are still in the running? Is this all a wind-up?
Nationwider Posted 9 December 2006 Posted 9 December 2006 Who have we got? Taylor, Calzaghe, Hatton, Clarke, Tweddle, Phillips, Panesar, Murray, Cooke, Button. Six - Cooke, Tweddle, Calzaghe, Hatton, Phillips, Taylor - have reached the very top in their sport, ie, are world champions. You can't have the darts player. Calzaghe's too arrogant. Hatton? Maybe not actually his best year - he just moved up in weight. So, I'd go for one of the three ladies. I can't give it to Phillips as its hardly rags to riches, is it? Which leaves Tweddle or Cooke.... Cooke, as she is genuinely at the very top of her sport. But no, Darren Clarke will win because his wife died. The public are wan kers. No offense, Dazza, but it must be embarassing?
Ultra Posted 9 December 2006 Posted 9 December 2006 No problem with Clarke winning it. OK, it's a sympathy vote, but so what? He was happy enough to accept it when it got him into the Ryder Cup side, or when folks bought his book. So why should he or anyone else have a problem with it now? At least he is a genuine winner and not one of those lovable losers like Gazza or Greg Rusedski who have won it in the past. When Calzaghe starts fighting in the States and winning a proper world title, THEN he can be regarded as a serious contender.
Nationwider Posted 9 December 2006 Posted 9 December 2006 Maybe I'm being a bit harsh about Dazza. Actually, no. If he wins' I'll puke. It would be nice for us to recognise someone who has really become the very best at what they do. Why do I care anyway? God, I'll be getting all upset about The Brits nominations next. Random thought, but I can't believe Dame Gary never won it. Again, sympathy vote for Gazza in '90. He should have got it in '86 instaed of Mansell. Anything on a horse or in a car is a hobby - not a sport.

In which case, perhaps we should give it to Fernando Alonso, Shane Warne or Tiger Woods and leave nationality out of it altogether....
Finnegan Posted 9 December 2006 Author Posted 9 December 2006 You just can't deny Calzaghe's record and the Lacey fight was as good as any sporting triumph that usually sways these things (Gold for Redgrave, gold for Radcliffe, gold for Kelly Holmes, Ashes for Freddie) if not better. Too arrogant? Not really, not by the standards of boxers, anyway. I'd almost call him modest lined up next to some of the "big" names in world boxing, to be honest.
Nationwider Posted 9 December 2006 Posted 9 December 2006 In which case, perhaps we should give it to Fernando Alonso Car hobbyist. Shane Warne or Tiger Woods and leave nationality out of it altogether.... Quite happily. Warne is a genius. The Best Cricketer Of All-Time.

Arrogance shouldn't come into it - and his record is good, per se. I just heard an interview with him recently and he said the deserved to win SPOTY as no-one else in GB had done anything all year, and I thought, "Tit".
Finnegan Posted 9 December 2006 Author Posted 9 December 2006 I shook my head at that interview, too. The one where he said he wouldn't win because he was a winner? Heh. That came across as really bitter. But you have to put it in the context of his career over the years. He's never managed to get the spotlight from undeserving others for one reason or another and it's got to be frustrating.

lookwhaticando Posted 10 December 2006 Posted 10 December 2006 Equestrian star Zara Phillips was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year with a victory in a public vote. Results in full @ BBC Sport Theo Walcott was Young Personality ... I guess because people felt sorry he got dragged all the way over to Germany for a month to do sod all. No mention of that boxing chap.
Maybes Posted 10 December 2006 Posted 10 December 2006 How did theo walcott win an award?? He has hardly set the world alight has he.
