Managerial Success Analysis

Recommended Posts

I just did a quick analysis of the average number of points per game for each of our managers in our clubs history. It produces some very interesting results.

Kelly scores 0.2 above the club average, but behind Adams, O'Niell and Little.

And look at Brian Little at number 2! I never would have thought he'd be that high!

*I removed any managers who werein charge for under 10 games

Just thought it made some interesting reading, not sure if anyone has worked this out before. :dunno:

It doesn't quite tell a true story, some managers had their time in the top flight some didn't. Still interesting though.

Those are interesting statistics but the relative achievement of each manager really needs to factor in the number of matches a manager was in charge and the division he was managing in.

For instance Matt Gillies managed for close to twice as many games as Martin O'Neill to achieve his record.

Gillies and O'Neill also managed in the top division and therefore came up against the best teams in the land whereas Kelly hasn't.

I agree -though I am yet to find anywhere that offers raw data at this level. Might be worthwhile just doing it back to 1996 when O Niell took charge and do it by season. I will see what I can rustle up.

No more than Brian Little, albeit in a different league.

Totally different having a crap squad in the second division to inheriting a crap team halfway through a season in the Premiership. Besides, Brian Little inherited players like David Kelly, Tommy Wright, Paul Kitson, David Oldfield, Steve Walsh, Ali Mauchlen, Tony James and Kevin Russell. It's a lot easier to build a decent second-tier side around players like that than haul the shite that Bassett inherited out of danger (most of the half-decent players already had an eye on the exit door IMO).

Well Pleat & Lee couldn't do it.

Didn't Bassett have Walker, Izzet, Savage, Elliott, Sinclair?

Irrespective Bassett was crap.

Bassett was crap and Little did well but very different situations. Even the players you list, they're no Flowers/Lennon/Collymore/Heskey.

Birrova pointless argument anyway yeah. :P

It's also interesting to note that RK isn't a million miles away from that oft-touted Managerial Maestro - Iain Dowie.

And he's a great improvement over Levein, who's amongst the worst of the managers so far.

It has been noted and I can see no merit in having totally unnecessary in favour of a manager who to me presents no evidence that he would be likely to do a better job.

There is no point in change for its own sake. Kelly has got a steady record, knows the club and knows the players. If an exciting alternative emerged and Kelly was showing no signs of making progress then fine, but pointless upheaval could backfire more easily than it might be successful.
