"If you are not good enough for the Premiership then you shouldn't referee in the Championship," Jones commented after Clattenburg had sent off two City player."The red and yellow cards handed out today were in the main for nothing challenges and at one stage I didn't know how many players I would end up with. "As far as my players are concerned they were magnificent and although we have slipped out of the play-off positions despite winning I am not too worried." I've never understood and always asked the question myself, If a Premiership referee makes a mistake he gets demoted to a lower league why should Championship teams be punished for his mistakes? Same goes for if a Championship referee makes a mistake get demoted why should League 1 teams be punished? How come if the allagation is true the Referee can swear at Wigan players but if a Wigan player swore or verbally abused the referee he would get sent off? And how come managers and players can't say a bad word against the referee when it is clear what they are saying is true? Something major has to be done about referees. They have a hard job everyone can see and understand that, but something needs doing...It's as if the F.A/F.L see that referees can do no wrong! Having said that referee always get slagged off but hardly ever praised (Although it might be because they don't deserve to be praised the majority of the time) but today the referee of our game was pretty good!

Fair enough, but the gap between Premiership and Championship in terms of difficulty to referee isnt that huge, they should be booted further down but I guess then you'd run out of refs pretty quick as everyone makes mistakes, but Clattenburg's performance today would be an embarrassment in a pub league. b) they aren't allowed to swear at players, they're supposed to get suspended for it, but if its their word vs. a player and nobody else hears it, theirs is going to be whats taken. c) is supposed to be because it increases the pressure on the refs and because its impossible to do after the event corrections and also, because refereeing is hard. Although somehow I think the FA will try and sweep this one under the carpet rather than have a go at Jones, its THAT bad. Its fair enough saying "this mistake by the ref was costly for us", but some reactions are a bit ott.

Webbo Posted 17 February 2007 Posted 17 February 2007 i would think that it's a punishment/humiliation to be demoted. you can't sack refs every time they have a bad game or we'd soon run out of refs. in a lower division they can practice and get back to form. if they don't improve they can be demoted again until they find their level.

He turned down two blatant handballs one of which would have been a penalty. I doubt we'd have been given the first goal in an away game, either. Apart from that he was even, I guess.
Random Burglar Posted 18 February 2007 Posted 18 February 2007 My Uncle was a Championship Referee and a Premiership Linesman. One in four games are viewed by an assessor. Then an average mark over those roughly 10 games is calculated. They must get over 7.6 (hypothetical figure, i cant remember how much it is) He got 7.5, he was 0.1 of a mark away from a pass. He was then dropped down from those league select and went straight into refereeing at Southern Conference Level and now doesnt referee at all. So it does happen at Championship Level, their marks over the other games must be high enough to keep them at this level. Edit: Every other week there is a thread about Referees, there is nothing any of us can do about, if you are that fussed, take the course at Leicestershire FA headquarters and see how difficult the job is then. All referees start at the bottom with Sunday League football at whatever age they take the course at. They have spent years with abuse from blokes who are 18 stone and like to they their weight around, still drunk from the night before and still insist they could have been pro and that the referee is always wrong. They do this because they enjoy it, for most it is a second job.

I could understand if it was the odd mistake here and there but its the stupid, obvious, descisions they make all the time.
davieG Posted 18 February 2007 Posted 18 February 2007 I've refereed a few games unofficially and even thought of doing it properly. But i gave it up because of the abuse from the players, some even from the team I was managing at the time. The last straw came when I gave a penalty to player who then spent the rest of the game goading/laughing at me as to how he'd conned the penalty out of me. That said I still vent my spleen against them now and again but often feel guilty for doing so. It's an unenviable task.
Simi Posted 18 February 2007 Posted 18 February 2007 There are alot of poor decsions made from ref's at the top but they have a split second to make the decsion at times they are bound to make the wrong decsion. I agree that some decsions are blatantly more obvious than others but surely if every referee was perfect than football would be a lot less interesting. The media live of slating referees on a Sunday morning etc. I'm guilty of shouting at ref's too but it's part of football.

I thought he made some comical decisions to be fair, they should have had a penalty and as for the free kick Nils got when he just changed direction and ran into the player and fell over never a free kick in a million years!! Kyle should have been booked at least once!! he missed so much and the fact that he was so inept probably made him look better than he was.

But can ANYONE stick up for Uriah Rennies proformance today? Referees like Uriah Rennie are the referee's people moan and want to kick out of football week in week out, I can accept the odd mistake, but referee's like we had today can fook off. Rennie reffed the match like a prem match. Every 50-50 was a free kick. Awful from Rennie today.
