lookwhaticando Posted 18 March 2007 Posted 18 March 2007 Time to dust of my Greece shirt and hope they make it because Engerland wont be if those two are playing fullback! Them Greeks won Euro 2004 by being solid and organized. England's team for these qualifiers is neither solid nor organised. These two qualifiers could be the death of our Euro 2008 campaign. We need Otto Rehhagel as our manager.
Simi Posted 18 March 2007 Posted 18 March 2007 Richards is suffering from a recurring calf muscle injury. Carragher is likely to start in the RB slot. As good a defender as Carragher is... he's no RB. Mind you... Neville is no LB... so that's one wank defence. It get's worse. Why Gareth Barry is not in the squad I don't know.
lookwhaticando Posted 18 March 2007 Posted 18 March 2007 It get's worse. Why Gareth Barry is not in the squad I don't know. Because Smiler Steve doesn't like "playing players out of position". Barry plays LM usually... not LB... so we shouldn't play him at LB. Or so says Steve. But it's alright to play a CM at RM, a CB at RB and a useless willy puller at LB. Well done Steve, you prize willy puller. Club England... my arse.

These two qualifiers could be the death of our Euro 2008 campaign. We need Otto Rehhagel as our manager. Mate, I am Greek-Cypriot through parentage and live in North London where there is loads of us buggers and not one of us put a shilling on Greece winning the Euro 2004 tourney!! That was a miracle but it goes to show that there must be something in the fact that Greece had a plan and played to there strengths. England, regardless of who we have in charge are blessed with so many quality players but for some reason we cant get a coach to organise them to a particular system or style. For years we have been all over the place and I cant put my finger on it. Maybe our players are too up themselves or loaded to actually achieve anything Internationally?? Fook knows!!!!
lookwhaticando Posted 18 March 2007 Posted 18 March 2007 So you agree Otto is the man to take us forward?
Geo V Posted 18 March 2007 Posted 18 March 2007 So you agree Otto is the man to take us forward? A German in charge of our national team will never happen! The Swede was bad enough for your average Joe! I think the Greek players who were on huge bonuses and lets face it, havent earned the crazy money that the English players earn probably wanted it more than the English lads. They were fighting for every ball but importantly knew there limitations and didnt try tobe what they arent! In England, we seem to think that we deserve to be the best at every sport without actually having to try, and thats probably why we are disliked in Sports by our neighbours like the Welsh and Scots!
Manwell Pablo Posted 19 March 2007 Posted 19 March 2007 It get's worse. Why Gareth Barry is not in the squad I don't know. Well, he is now http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/i...als/6462361.stm
Milky Posted 19 March 2007 Author Posted 19 March 2007 Chopra for England? Cardiff striker Michael Chopra admits it 'does his head in' to see David Nugent ahead of him in the England pecking order. Preston's Nugent has been selected for England's Under 21 game against Italy but could be called up to the senior squad if there are any late withdrawals, after being placed on standby by Steve McClaren. Chopra is the Championship's top scorer with 21 goals this term but has been overlooked for international duty since earning one Under 21 cap when he was at Newcastle. And he concedes it is frustrating to see others in line to be picked before him. "It does do my head in to see David Nugent called up like that for England, to be honest with you," Chopra told the Western Mail. "He's a good player, but I don't think I'm getting a fair crack at the england set up" http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=4...ustrates+Chopra
breadandcheese Posted 19 March 2007 Posted 19 March 2007 I think injuries to Crouch and Neville may well save McClaren's job for a bit. Finally, we can have a striker who plays off the last man starting alongside Rooney (rather than the preferred Rooney-Crouch combo that is as blunt as a breeze block). Finally, we may have a more balanced team with Barry in there. I suspect McClaren will start Neville and Carragher because he is a pig-headed tw*t, but after 45 mns, he will be forced to change it and may well bring Barry on. With a bit of balance, we may be alright.

I don't think even the scousers think that. Or am I missing something?

I don't think even the scousers think that. Or am I missing something? Neville is quite possibly the best right-back England has ever had. My point is that with Neville injured, Barry may well get a chance at left-back at some point during the game. I do not believe he will start as McClaren is pig-headed and a poor judge, but when Israel attempt to expose England down the left, McClaren may well be forced to bring Barry on to provide some balance. It is at that point we will be a better team. With regards Carragher, although not being a full-back, he is certainly more comfortable playing right-back than left-back. Having Barry may well mean he is shifted to the right.
The Reverend Posted 20 March 2007 Posted 20 March 2007 I know that Chopra should never make the England team but to be fair he does have a good point. If Nugent has then why not Chopra. I said this to someone earlier- if Nugents scored 20+ goals get him in the squad but he hasnt hes only got 15 in just the Championship- thats rubbish. TBF though i didnt even know Chopra was English.

Leonisco Posted 20 March 2007 Posted 20 March 2007 Nice to see Nugent in the squad, but why's he ignored Lita? He's a much better player IMO, and he has Premiership experience.
Guest Gist Posted 20 March 2007 Posted 20 March 2007 I think it is a good thing Nugent has been called up, he is talented and has the potential. It's good for his development, just training with the regulars and getting that feel of the first team for the futre when he could well be a regular. I can see the point Chopra is making scoring more goals must be frustrating and then not getting a place but I bet it's because Nugent has been scoring plenty of goals for a longer time, also it could be to do with him having a different style of play that has earned him a place ahead of the other possible choices.

Isnt that an insight on how shite our forwards are when two Championship players are vying for a place in the squad???!! Its great for Nugent who has done so well at u-21 level to be involved in the full squad and you are right in what you say of the experience of training with better players will help. Thats one of the reasons why our kids at City dont seem to improve quicker, because they have to train with donkeys like AJ everyday!
Manwell Pablo Posted 21 March 2007 Posted 21 March 2007 Luke Young has been called up. England squad: Goalkeepers: Robinson (Tottenham), Foster (Man Utd, on loan at Watford), Carson (Liverpool, on loan at Charlton). Defenders: Richards (Man City), Ferdinand (Man Utd), Terry (Chelsea, capt), Woodgate (Real Madrid, on loan at Middlesbrough), Carragher (Liverpool), A Cole (Chelsea), P Neville (Everton), Barry (Aston Villa), L Young (Charlton). Midfielders: Gerrard (Liverpool), Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Lampard (Chelsea), Lennon (Tottenham), Parker (Newcastle), Carrick (Man Utd), Dyer (Newcastle), Downing (Middlesbrough). Forwards: Johnson (Everton), Rooney (Man Utd), Defoe (Tottenham), Nugent (Preston). Israel squad: Goalkeepers: Dudu Aouate (Deportivo Coruna), Nir Davidovich (Maccabi Haifa), Shavit Elimelech (Hapoel Tel Aviv). Defenders: Tal Ben Haim (Bolton Wanderers), Arik Benado (Beitar Jerusalem), Shimon Gershon (Beitar Jerusalem), Yoav Ziv (Beitar Jerusalem), Tomer Ben Yosef (Beitar Jerusalem), Yuval Shpungin (Maccabi Tel Aviv), Yigal Antebi (Hapoel Tel Aviv), Dani Bodarv (Hapoel Tel Aviv). Midfielders: Yossi Benayoun (West Ham United), Walid Badir (Hapoel Tel Aviv), Salim Toamah (Hapoel Tel Aviv), Gal Alberman (Beitar Jerusalem), Yaniv Katan (Maccabi Haifa) Idan Tal (Bolton Wanderers), Omer Golan (Maccabi Petah Tikva). Forwards: Elyaniv Barda (Hapoel Tel Aviv), Amit Ben Shushan (Beitar Jerusalem), Pini Balili (Sivaspor), Roberto Colautti (Maccabi Haifa), Toto Tamuz (Beitar Jerusalem), Ben Sahar (Chelsea). In Isreal, with smiler in charge, with tha squad. I really am worried.

I`d rather play Hargreaves at rightback than Young. I think he is pants. I see Nugent wants to start for England??! Who would prefer him instead of Defoe or AJ?? http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=4...t+starting+spot BTW McClaren seems to have made his mind-up http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=4...+on+partnership
breadandcheese Posted 21 March 2007 Posted 21 March 2007 BTW McClaren seems to have made his mind-up http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=4...+on+partnership This is the best partnership England can muster but the simple question is, why did we not play this combo earlier in friendlies? Why did we have Dyer playing off Rooney last game when it was clear to all bar him what would happen? Why has AJ only ever played as a right winger for England? That is what annoys me about McClaren and no amount of PR training or courses on "How to speak to the media" are going to change that.

That is what annoys me about McClaren and no amount of PR training or courses on "How to speak to the media" are going to change that. He is out of his depth. Simple as that! There is a fine line though when it comes to International friendlies. Do you play a settled team to get them used to playing togther in a particular system or do you try new players to see how easily they adjust to that level?! Its a close call. I feel sorry for McClaren because he isnt a great manager and was just picked as the best of the available English managers because the FA were being lambasted for being brave enough to bring in a foreign coach last time and the tabloids amongst others were demanding an englishman incharge for years, some from the day Sven was appointed! I hope McClaren can improve whilst in the job but I am worried that he wont get England to the Euro`s and then he will get sacked and we are back to square one, with the added problem of great players like Gerrard getting older and missing out on shining at the big International footy events!

That is what annoys me about McClaren and no amount of PR training or courses on "How to speak to the media" are going to change that. AJ has only ever been deployed on the wings because our last two managers are/have been a bit thick. The logic goes something like this: AJ's scoring too many goals to ignore him... so we must play him. But Rooney and Owen (or Crouch lately) are the golden-bollocked lads who can't be dropped... so we'll stick AJ on the wing. Compare that to: McAuley has been solid at CB with Kisnorbo... but McCarthy is the captain and he's fit again... damn... well, we'll stick McCarthy in at CB and push McAuley out onto the right. Hmmm.
TrickyTrev Posted 21 March 2007 Posted 21 March 2007 Heard McLaren on the radio saying what we need is a "backs aginast the wall performance" and to "really grind one out." As if the use of meaningless cliches wasn't enough, it also sets completely the wrong tone. We are playing Israel for fook sake. What we need to do is play as a football team, that means passing and moving not rolling the ball to the full back who lumps it to rooney because he has no other options. If We play as wen can we should be far too good for Israel, but you can guarentee we'll put loads of men behind the ball, so no ambition and resort to aimless long balls. Why? We have a muppet of a manager.
