The 20-year-old has struggled for first-team opportunities with The Rams since his summer switch from Arsenal. Smith will get the chance to earn more playing time with Millwall over the next month, as The Lions push for promotion from League One. Derby boss Billy Davies expects a spell at The Den to be beneficial to both player and club in the long term. "He is a young player who has always been very much a long-term signing for us," Davies said. "When a team finds themselves doing well in the league, as we are, inevitably certain young players find games restricted. "That's been the case with Ryan so the month at Millwall should be very beneficial to both the player and Derby County."

After a big fall like this, I think he would be a decent signing for us as he will now no longer think of himself as better than he really is.

And look where Gary Lineker ended up playing - England captain, Barcelona etc. Ryan Smith was an arrogant **** who also happened to be a talented but lazy footballer. I have no sympathy for him after his attitude whilst he was here. People like Thrac were lamenting Kelly for letting Smith go, and look how sh*t he's done at Derby. He's not as good as some people here think - even if he does have a bit of natural talent that most others lack. Until he gets his head sorted (and I couldn't care less) he'll end up another potential talent who just throws it all down the drain.

I can see how a young lad who has the girls chasing him when he tells them he is a pro footballer for Arsenal could get above himself. Give him time to mature with the right people and he could one day become a decent player.

He clearly isn't as good as he thinks he is, or Arsenal wouldn't have let him go. You'd have thought being released by Arsenal and going to Derby would have given him a wake up call wouldn't you? I hope he plays shit for Millwall. Either that or has lumps kicked out of him in League One (a tad more physical than our league down there ) to bring him down a peg or two. Otherwise he's headed nowhere fast. Same as Max Gradel from what I understand.

All footballers believe they're good - they just express it differently and if you're going to abandon every arrogant, conceited, poseur of a player just because they're what they are then you'll leave a lot of talent at the wayside. Somehow the trick is for managers and coaches to channel the ability of Smith and Gradel into a productive outcome. It may be difficult, it might not even be possible, but I wouldn't be giving up at their age. Any manager can deal with the self-effacing/co-operative types. But you know you've a chance of succeeding if you can deal with the Roy Keane's.

It'll unsettle the balance of the squad and have an adverse effect on team morale. I hear Gradels attitude is still way off what it should be, and is actually relatively immature/arrogant as well, thus the reason he hasn't been given the chance in the first team squad despite his ability. Evidently these players are still young and no doubt they're on the learning curve, and so they have time to change and have time to sort themselves out. But professional sport requires a certain level of maturity and positive, professional attitude. Without it, you won't go too far I wouldn't think.

Tis true, they can't all get themselves motivated and fit and secure a lucrative contract at Millwall like Ryan Smith.

Personally I'd have thought that accepting petulance and tantrums would set a bad precedent in any workplace. Billy Davies is no mug as a manager and he can see it's time to give the jumped up little tw@t a wake up call.
