I reckon they have to be one of the best inventions ever - especially the big one down in Swindon.

Well done designers of roundabouts! :appl:

i'm a big fan of roundabouts, as the keep the traffic moving, but whoever thought putting traffic lights on them want shooting in the knee caps

I do like a nice roundabout.

Although not strictly a roundabout, I'm a great admirer of the new(ish) J32A intersecting the M62 halfway between J32 (Pontefract) and J33 (Ferrybridge). That, and the new bit of the A1(M) at Weatherby are really THE roads to be seen driving on this year.

Oooh, and while we're at it:- service stations? My favourites are Tibshelf (M1), Leeming Bar (A1(M)) and Didcot (A43? Or is it the A34...I can never remember?

deary deary me, you really have fallen for the spin haven't you? THE roads to be seen on this year are, obviously the B676 between melton and colsterworth and the A494 between druid and dolgellau, as wales and lincolnshire, again, enjoy another year in the roads' limelight

Not sure it is either. But I did see this in Wikipedia making reference to an unsuitable roundabout.:ph34r::cry:

The A43 then continues towards Towcester, where it meets the A5 (Roman Watling Street) at a roundabout. This roundabout is dangerously unsuited to the traffic volumes it handles on both roads. Continuing towards Northampton, it bypasses Towcester and numerous other villages, before reaching the M1 at junction 15A.

Today I enjoyed the A15, and in particular, the Caenby Corner Little Chef. The petrol station there has a massive dog, which was odd.

More tales of NW in Lincolnshire to follow over the coming months!!!!

Aaah. That must make Didcot on the A34. I think the A43 links the M1 to the M40. I think I know that roundabout as well.

Personally, I prefer this one in Hemel - hours of fun to be had...

See if you can figure this out... clear as mud!

The 'Magic Roundabout' has also been described as a 'who dares wins' roundabout and as

'hilarious, totally aggressive and kick-arse'. Wow. All this over a roundabout. Well, for a start,

it consists of one large roundabout, surrounded by six mini-roundabouts - one for each of the

six original junctions. And how does that work, you might ask? Basically, each mini-roundabout

is treated just like a normal roundabout, with the main roundabout acting as a sort of distraction.

But the really distinguishing motif of this grand cosmic wheel of traffic is that you are perfectly

entitled to turn right at any of the mini-roundabouts as well as turn left. This means you can quite

easily find yourself driving anti-clockwise around the main roundabout. And let's not forget,

clockwise and clockwise only is the rule of thumb for all other British roundabouts. As you might

well imagine, this causes a lot of confusion.

And when it was introduced roughly 30 years ago it caused so much confusion that policeman

were positioned on each of the six roundabouts in an attempt to direct the lost traffic as

bewildered drivers abandoned their cars, weeping into their now useless highway code books,

simply unable to grasp the weirdness of this two-way circle.

Eventually, however, the locals managed to get the hang of it and today the roundabout is

considered a great success because, in terms of actually controlling traffic, it works.

But be warned; if you have never been to Hemel Hempstead before and have therefore never

experienced the 'Magic Roundabout', it is suggested by some of those pesky local Hemel

Hempstead jokers that you bring a spare pair of trousers with you for the journey. The effect on

the nervous system - and one can't help but think of the bowels, too - can be quite disruptive.

It's quite a frightening experience and the locals can always spot a 'Magic Roundabout' virgin

a mile off, thinking it to be very funny indeed.

I hate the things.

You still get people not understanding who has right of way and when to go and you see them steaming across like it was the M1.

Also we have a bstard Roundabout in London known as the Cambridge round about (one exit heads for Cambridge Road) but that is a pain in the backside as its got lights on it that are always faulty which usually results in carnage as its so busy.

I should point out that the so-called "mini-roundabout" is in fact not a real roundabout at all.

Pour scorn on the mini-roundabout - it's stupid.

My wife does that for traffic lights, pedestrianised zones and T-junctions

Zebra crossings are the most fun. I mean, did I ever look like I was planning on stopping?!
