Bryn Posted 29 March 2007 Posted 29 March 2007 Reading the international footy thread get on to talk of who would get into a Great Britain team, I got to thinking who actually would get into that team? Try to put yourself into the shoes of a completely impartial manager, who doesn't think about who is the most famous, or who plays for your country. Assume that all players are fit. I'm not going to say try and put at least one player from each nation in, if you wanna put the entire N. Ireland squad in, feel free. GK: Shay Given: Fantastic goalkeeper, regularly up there amongst the best goalies in the Prem. RB: Gary Neville (Just): I think he is tremendously underated these days, a high quality rightback who's experienced and as good going forward as he is at the back. I badly wanted to put Steve Finnan here though, it was a tough call. LB: Gareth Bale: I've never been impressed with Ashley Cole and Bale really does look quality, if not slightly overrated. CB: Ledley King: If the ****er could get himself fit he'd piss all over the overrated Terry and Ferdinand. Wonderful defender who is good on the ball, great in the air strong at the back and has great pace. CB: John Terry: Overrated yes but still an immense defender. I'm personally not convinced that he's up there with the likes of Cannavaro but I think that centre back is the one area where I'm not even going to entertain the idea that any of the other home nations have better players. RM: Aaron Lennon: Has shitloads of potential, was wank against Andorra but looked like our most dangerous player in a lot of matches lately. LM: Ryan Giggs: No question, the best left winger in the Prem. CM: Steven Gerrard: When he wants to be he can be world-class. Possibly Englands most gifted player. CM: Owen Hargreaves: In the big games, he's just the sort of niggly player you need. Great at breaking the play up and redistributing possession. ST: Michael Owen: Awesome striker when fit. ST: David Healy: Can't leave him out, his international goal scoring record is excellent. Subs: Craig Gordon, Steve Finnan, Jonathan Woodgate, Robbie Savage, Wayne Rooney
JoeyB Posted 29 March 2007 Posted 29 March 2007 They do it for Rugby so for football they could have a go. but DONT pick McLaren as gaffer I'd say Sir Alex
Leonisco Posted 29 March 2007 Posted 29 March 2007 GK: Shay Given: Fantastic goalkeeper, regularly up there amongst the best goalies in the Prem.RB: Why would he be involved? The Republic of Ireland isn't part of Great Britain.
Brainy Posted 29 March 2007 Posted 29 March 2007 Why would he be involved? The Republic of Ireland isn't part of Great Britain. Easy mistake to make

Really?
JoeyB Posted 29 March 2007 Posted 29 March 2007 Healy ahead of Rooney? Really? When leeds get relegated i hope we go after him
Bryn Posted 29 March 2007 Author Posted 29 March 2007 I thought Eire was part of Great Britain, but not part of the UK? Hence me using the term Great Britain rather than UK, as I wanted to include ROI. Make it Great Britain and The Republic of Ireland then.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 29 March 2007 Posted 29 March 2007 Given Finnan Bale Pressley Gabbidon Duff Ferguson Koumas Earnshaw Healy Keane

Make it Great Britain and The Republic of Ireland then. Great Britain = England, Wales and Scotland, as it only refers to this island we're on now. UK = England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Republic of Ireland = Total different fooking country. We used to own it but they're independent now.
dandannieldanok Posted 29 March 2007 Posted 29 March 2007 Healy ahead of Rooney? Really? A few months ago I would have questioned it too, but Rooney has continually disappointed since Euro 04 in internationals and Healy's record in a lower ranked team speaks for itself.

Form is temporary and all that. Let's not forget that Rooney is only 20/21.
Joe. Posted 29 March 2007 Posted 29 March 2007 I think there would be a lot of general disappointment if a GB team was made. Let's face it, it's going to be at least 8/9 England players in there. Possibly Giggs and Given in there but that's it surely?
Geo V Posted 29 March 2007 Posted 29 March 2007 It will never happen, the supporters wont have it. Lets face it, we wont even invite Glasgow Rangers and Celtic into our premiership because we wouldnt want them to be as good as some of our clubs!

Hence me using the term Great Britain rather than UK, as I wanted to include ROI. Make it Great Britain and The Republic of Ireland then. United Kingdom comprises Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales... After all, the official title is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Just to reaffirm Leonisco's post above.

Lets face it, we wont even invite Glasgow Rangers and Celtic into our premiership because we wouldnt want them to be as good as some of our clubs! It's not that we're worried the Scots would do well in our league... it's that we don't want Rangers and Celtic in our top division because they want to just jump in without earning their place there first. Cardiff, meanwhile, are making their way to the top flight from the Football League. This is not what Rangers and Celtic have in mind. Why should two teams in the football league have to be kicked out to make room for two Scottish teams? A tad unfair, no? <_< The Scots no doubt wanted their own system at one point, so they got it.

Welsh teams have played apart in English football practically since its conception but the Scottish sides only want to join in because they havent any money. Personally, I would love the two Glasgow Clubs to join our Leagues because of the history of the clubs and the passion of the supporters. It would enhance our game but it is a non-starter unless we agree to have a GB team nationally.
Jordan Posted 30 March 2007 Posted 30 March 2007 For starters, there will be the Great Britain Olympic team in 2012...
Stevosevic Posted 30 March 2007 Posted 30 March 2007 Given Neville Ferdinand Terry Cole Lennon Gerrard Lamprd/Hargreaves Giggs Rooney Owen
Bryn Posted 30 March 2007 Author Posted 30 March 2007 Could a mod rename this to be "A team from the UK and Eire" please I feel like a right idiot each time I read the title. I know that would never happen but meh.
lildave3 Posted 30 March 2007 Posted 30 March 2007 Given Neville Ferdinand Terry Cole Lennon Gerrard Lamprd/Hargreaves Giggs Rooney Owen I'd go for the same.
Webbo Posted 30 March 2007 Posted 30 March 2007 Gordon (you've got to put at least 1 scot in ) Neville Woodgate Terry A. Cole Lennon Gerrard Hargreaves Giggs Rooney Healy.
Tevez Posted 30 March 2007 Posted 30 March 2007 Gordon Bale Woodgate Terry Richards Beckham Gerrard Hargreaves Giggs Healy Rooney
