Over the past few months (or longer), we have had several threads and polls on our favourite drinks.

From these, I gathered that many of you like Coke and Diet Coke.

Therefore, I thought the following article would be of interest to you

Behind the Label: Diet Coke

Far from being the healthy drink implied by its sports sponsorships,

Diet Coke is a worrying cocktail of neurotoxic and potentially carcinogenic chemicals.

I don't care if it's bad for me.

Everything I do, eat or drink will give me cancer or some other disease nowadays.

This is in the same vein as Super Size Me. What did you honestly think would happen if you ate the shit that McDonald's pumps out all the time? Of course it's bad for you. I don't need some twat doing a film about it to tell me that.

This is just another scare in the molly-coddle world we live in.

I'll eat what I want, drink what I want and do what I want thank you very much. And I won't blame anyone else but myself for the consequences.

Surely it’s not as bad as say drinking a beer or any other form of alcohol?

Possibly worse? :whistle::P

(Granted, quantity, quality and frequency of drinking will make a difference too)

I can’t see how that is?

Alcohol is far worse than any soft drink, in any quantity

I think your wrong there. Some soft drinks can be really bad. Some beers, such as organic  are not too bad.

Are you a smoker? :blink::P

(According to a lecturer in the psychology department, this is the same kind of thinking as smokers usually display. And, judging from the way my dad ended up, it does not help at all :( )

I am not one for scares. I simply think "manufactured foods" (ie processed foods and drinks) are worse than any foods we used to have years ago. People are cutting corners, using chemicals to make products "on the cheap", so that they will look decent/palatable/be addictive even if they contain plastic-derived substances, pesticides and similar harmful substances. Where has greed taken us?

It is not true that ANYTHING will give you cancer. There are some things that will have a protective effect against it and there are things that are more under our control than others. This is one of them. I can choose whether to drink Diet Coke or not. So I won't. (In fact, I will not drink any soft drinks, especially flavoured, carbonated ones)

I cannot stand people saying "oh anything gives you cancer or kills you, so I will smoke 30-40 a day, won't eat veggies because I don't like them and instead eat McDonalds whenever I feel like it, eat processed foods and sweets daily, take several medicines on a routinely basis, use products with lots of chemicals and watch telly all day... stuff exercise: it's too much work".

All these things (and more) do make a difference. I understand that, in this alarmist world of (often contradicting but also poor-science articles/news) it is often difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff but... generally we have become such slaves to brands that it is ridiculous and well past being funny... :(

We put alsorts of toxins in our body, from breathing the air to putting shit on our face. Our bodies have mechanisms to cope with them!!

The underlying fact is that, yes we should try to aviod but in moderation these toxins are of minimum risks!! Although giving kids fizzy stuff etc is not a good thing, it's like recreational drugs to my kids, they go wappy!!!

I don't drink alcohol either but... (off the top of my head):

a) we (humanity) have been drinking alcohol for thousands of years. While not really good for us, our bodies might have established some tolerance for it and moderate drinking of organic wine with meals is seen as an acceptable habit in Mediterranean countries.

b) we have not been ingesting artificial sweeteners for long and our bodies have no clue what to do with them

(some - even very good - research has shown that aspartame, for instance, is linked to various serious health problems.

All soft drinks advertising "no sugar added" contain one or more artificial sweeteners)

c) Soft drinks with sugar contain sugar (and generally artificial colourings and flavourings). Links with attention deficit disorders and other health problems come to mind. These ingredients are (nearly 100%) man-made and we simply have no clue what they do to our bodies.

My guess is: nothing too good.

d) It has been reported that drinking a can of coke will depress your immune system for several hours.

We hardly want our immune system to be compromised, as this will mean more colds/flu/warts/infections and potentially more chance of serious health problems getting a foothold in our bodies.

e) Soft drinks contain an acid that is apparently little better than battery acid and causes damage to teeth and bones

These are just a few points, hope they are somewhat useful.

I'm a former smoker and I actually live a (relatively) healthy lifestyle (apart from some weekend mischief  ) - I go to the gym 3 times a week, I eat well, I'm active, I work hard and I play hard.

And yes I know that not everything will give you cancer, I was being sarcastic!

I'm just sick of the media obsession with creating panics over so many aspects of our lives nowadays. Do this, you'll die, do that, you'll get cancer. Let people live their own lives the way they want. It certainly doesn't come as any surprise that Diet Coke is bad for me. Maybe I overestimate the common sense of the general public.

If these so called medical experts are so sure that these things are so awfully bad for your health why haven’t they found cures? Each person will react differently and it’s impossible for them to know how an individual will react when taking or ingesting these so called harmful substances. There’s no proof that second hand smoke can harm you? Granted that anything that kills you is bad, but people enjoy drinking or smoking the odd fag / cigar. If the medical world were are so fundamentally sure how the human body reacts then surely curing these related illnesses should be relatively easy? Like James The Blue said that some people write scare mongering reports that what seems like everything in the world will give you some sort of disease. People who have drank like a fish, smoked, eating fish & chips every day of life for 40 years have gone on to live until the 100 years old.

I know you were being sarchastic (or were exaggerating the way Italians do when they talk),

but I was not certain that everyone else did. :P

Yes I guess you might be overestimating the common sense of the general public. I do see people leaving their favourite supermarket with dozens of extra-huge bottles of coke/diet coke and other soft drinks. We know for a fact that the consumption of "sodas" in the States is going through the roof. Not much common sense there I am afraid :(

(I know that just shows that Americans, as a nation, do not have much common sense, but we are deluding ourselves if we think that we are much better... as we generally end up importing most of their trends, sooner or later  )

How exactly does that affect you in any way shape or form?

I suggest you let people live they way they want to, your choice of lifestyle is not necessarily the right one.

And the moral of the story is... dieting is bad.

So eat and drink what you fcuking well want, because the alternative is absolutely no fun, and it's just as bad for you anyway.
