Benoit dead.!

I remember the old days of a young Benoit - just a good wrestler.

Never thought he would end like this...

But innocent until proven guilty with regards to the scenario of the deaths.

Benoit strangled his wife, smothered his son, then hung himself.

ATLANTA (AP) -- Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife and smothered his son before hanging himself in his weight room, a law enforcement official close to the investigation told The Associated Press Tuesday.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Authorities also said they are investigating whether steroids may have been a factor in the deaths of Benoit, his wife and their 7-year-old son who were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide.

Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard said test results may not be back for weeks or even months.

Autopsies were scheduled Tuesday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in DeKalb County.

Investigators believe Benoit (pronounced ben-WAH) killed his wife, 43-year-old Nancy, and son Daniel during the weekend and then himself Monday. The bodies were found Monday afternoon in three separate rooms of the house, off a gravel road about two miles from the Whitewater Country Club.

Fayette County Coroner C.J. Mowell did not return calls seeking comment. The answering service for his funeral home said he was out of town.

Authorities also declined to say whether drugs or steroids were found inside the house. "We're not releasing any information as far as what was located inside the house," sheriff's Sgt. Keith Whiteside said Tuesday.

Asked about the condition of the interior of the house, Whiteside said investigators found "nothing really out of the ordinary." He said Benoit was found in the home's weight room, his wife in an office and the son in an upstairs bedroom.

Whiteside said toxicology tests could take up to a week or longer to complete.

Neighbors said the Benoits led a low-key lifestyle.

"They were nice," said Lorre Jones, who lives across the street. Her daughter Alaina said: "We would see Chris walking in his yard from time to time. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't really outwardly warm."

Jimmy Baswell, who was Benoit's driver for more than five years, placed a white wreath at the Benoits' gate Tuesday.

"I saw him with his family all the time," said Baswell. "They always seemed like they were the happiest people."

World Wrestling Entertainment said on its Web site that it asked authorities to check on Benoit and his family after being alerted by friends who received "several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning."

The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., said it had been asked by authorities not to release further information on the deaths.

Benoit, born in Montreal, was a former world heavyweight champion, Intercontinental champion and held several tag-team titles. His names in the ring included "The Canadian Crippler."

"WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family's relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy," the company said in a statement on its Web site.

Benoit had maintained a home in metro Atlanta from the time he wrestled for the defunct World Championship Wrestling. The Fayette County Tax Assessors Office lists the value of the house, situated on more than 8.5 acres, at nearly $900,000.

The WWE canceled its live Monday Night RAW card in Corpus Christi, Texas, and USA Network aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit in place of the scheduled wrestling telecast.

Benoit's wife managed several wrestlers and went by the stage name "Woman." They met when her then-husband drew up a script that had them involved in a relationship as part of a story line on World Championship Wrestling, the newspaper said.

Benoit has two other children from a prior relationship.

Benoit became a standout at an early age among wrestling prospects who trained in the dungeon basement of the house where fellow Canadians and professional wrestlers Owen and Bret Hart trained. Owen Hart was killed during a wrestling event in 1999.

"He was like a family member to me, and everyone in my family is taking it real hard," said Bret Hart, a five-time champion with the World Wrestling Federation. The federation has since changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment.

I used to watch WCW a little when I was younger, and Benoit was one of my favourite wrestlers (Goldberg was No.1 :worship::worship::worship: ). I didn't follow his career when he went to WWF/E, but I'm saddened by this news, especially so close after the death of Guerrero. How someone didn't notice that he was depressed or unwell is beyond me.

Can't believe it either, especially the gradual way in which he did it. Benoit was very good at what he did and from what I can tell seemed to be well liked and highly respected. Things must have gone very wrong for him to do that though.

Looking at some of these stories it is clear that something needs to be done about that business. Apparently 60 pro wrestlers have died under the age of 45 and I'm sure that many more are seriously unwell. That is an absolutely shocking statistic. According to one news story him and his wife had also been injecting the son with a growth hormone too which kind of shows how widespread substance abuse must be in pro wrestling.

That is very scary, I heard it on newsbeat on radio 1, it sounds like the steroids did it, he went crazy and then killed his wife and son, why did he put bibles by them after killing them though, if he really loved them, he wouldn't have killed them in the first place. And then to kill himself is just cowardly. I despise him.

Not really into wrestling, but this whole thing is quite intersting (if a bit sick).

The bit about how he killed his wife on the Saturday, his kid on the Sunday and himself on the Monday-

The strange thing is that their Wikipedia entry was updated on the Saturday night, to reference Nancy (his wife)'s death. But that was even before the police knew what had happened. And, by the IP address used to upde the website, the entry was made from Stamford, CT - the same location as the HQ for WWE, and where most of the wrestlers were that night (except Benoit, who was busy killing?) to discuss the following day's pay per view event. So who updated the website to say that she was dead?

Bizarre.....

It's weird to be honest. To be living in the house where you've just killed your family, somethings not going right in your head.

Benoit’s son suffered from Fragile X Syndrome; speculation over whether pressure was too much

Written: June 27, 2007WWE.com learned from an interview conducted Tuesday by Vancouver’s News1130 that Chris Benoit’s son Daniel possibly suffered from Fragile X Syndrome, a genetically passed-on condition that results in impairments ranging from physical and learning disabilities, to more severe cognitive or intellectual disabilities.

In the interview with News1130, Pam Winthrope, whose own 12-year-old son suffers from Fragile X Syndrome, recounted how she and her husband talked to Benoit about the condition five years ago.

“We talked to him because I was trying to set up a support group in B.C. and in Canada; we only have a couple of them,†she said. “My husband was struggling when we got diagnosed with our son, and Chris was struggling with his. They talked for a few minutes, and then he said he didn’t want to be a public face for Fragile X. He just wanted to keep it really, really quiet.â€

A source close to Benoit recalls similar conversations with him, where he described his son’s condition as “a learning disability much like autism.†This source quotes Benoit as saying “Daniel wasn’t capable of interacting with other children and was afraid of other children. Daniel also had a hard time making eye contact with everyone, which was another symptom of his disability.†Benoit also claimed that his son was on medication for this condition.

Winthrope discussed the pressures facing parents of children diagnosed with Fragile X syndrome. During her interview with News1130, she stated that families can be torn apart by the disease because it's very difficult to find help and support. Winthrope added, "You as a parent have to go out there and find what's available and it's not easy -- they don't tell you."

A co-worker and long-time friend of the Benoits speculates that perhaps the pressures of home and Daniel’s illness had gotten to him, causing him to snap and take the lives of his wife and son before taking his own.

“Is it possible that after Chris killed Nancy (for whatever reason), he felt Daniel wouldn't be able to get the care and attention he required as a special needs child (if that is indeed true) with no mother and a father either in jail or dead? Did he then decide that the only way he could protect and take care of his son was to take him to the next world and go with him? In his warped and twisted state, did he think this was the only way to shield his son from a difficult life of pain and hardship? It doesn't condone or justify a damn thing, but it's the best reason I can think of. I'm trying to put together some semblance of logic for his actions, but it's an impossible task trying to explain this.â€

With all the stuff about his sons illness and the pressure of being on the road/needing to be at home I think deep depression is probably more to blame than steroids. According to the WWE he had tested negative for them in his last test anyway. Steroids can cause and heighten a state of depression though and I think he wasn't exactly helped being in an environment were they were so easily obtainable.

According to many psychologists its quite common in cases were the father commits suicide and kills his wife and children to have the motive that they believe that the family will be better off in heaven. I think some of the new information coming out about Fragile X and of the bibles being placed next to the bodies seems to support this theory quite well. Not going to stop the American media going on a columbine-esque witch hunt though instead of asking why American families with disabled children get fook all help.

this is some crazy news, i am well shocked. I too used to watch WWE a lot when i was younger and actually went to see a live event in Sheffield. I find it unbelievable how someone could actually do this to the people that are most close to them.

I went to that, I touched the Championship belt.

I haven't washed my hand since.

err...I hope you have you filthy bastard, especially if you are inclined to masterbate with that hand or prepare raw meats (yes they ARE mutually exclusive). You're just asking for trouble

I use my right hand exclusively for the preparation of meats.

I touched the belt with my left.
