Born in South Africa, Matty moved to England with his family when he was 11 and joined the United Academy when he was 14.A stocky and aggressive midfielder, he made his reserve team debut at Everton on 20 August 2003 and has already established a good goals per game ratio at United. Played in a first team friendly at Celtic in August 2004 before a serious cruciate knee injury sustained in training a few weeks later put an end to his 2004/5 season. Matty injured the same knee again in May 2005 but returned as a substitute v Sheffield Wednesday in the Academy League on 5 November 2005, and scored! Signed a new contract on 20 December 2005, up until end of 2007/08 season. Made his first team bow as a substitute v Everton on 25 February 2006. Awarded the 'Wor Jackie' award by Sport Newcastle on 13 March 2006.
