Daggers Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 Effectively, my letter this morning says: Dear Daggers,We have calculated that you are owed £288.83 for the tax year but because we cocked up and over-paid you last year (and still haven't sorted it out) we are going to make additional payments to you for the rest of this tax year totalling £11,809.50. If nothing else happens during this tax year we will be overpaid by £11,809.50 for this award period. *phone rings* "Erm, hello HMR&C, can I ask you not to pay me this large sum of money, to which I am not entitled?" To which came the very first honest answer I have had from them: "No, I don't know what is going on!" Incompetent, useless idiots.

There'll be some little legal loophole somewhere. All of these Gov't types seem to feck up and not everybody pays back. What was it recently - was it Child Tax Credits or something? Millions just "forgotten". But HMR&C are quite powerful. I'd like to work for them. I think it would be a fun job!

Blue Bob Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 There'll be some little legal loophole somewhere. I'd like to work for them. I think it would be a fun job! My Ex - mother in law used to work for them. She said most of the staff there were beaucratic numb nuts. No one has any power but they like to make you think they have, They can only tax you within the bounds of the law but they like to make out that if you dont do what they say then they will persecute you (basically they are the sporn of hitler!!). I'd take the money. Put it in an interest account for 5 years if they dont want it back - enjoy, otherwise you get the interest.
Daggers Posted 8 August 2007 Author Posted 8 August 2007 I'd take the money. Put it in an interest account for 5 years if they dont want it back - enjoy, otherwise you get the interest. ...and then face month upon month of having to deal with them? I think not.
Maybes Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 ...and then face month upon month of having to deal with them? I think not. and them charging you 8 or 9 % interest when you were only getting 6% in the interest account.
Blue Bob Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 ...and then face month upon month of having to deal with them? I think not. I thought you would enjoy the step up from double glazing salesmen - see it as a new challenge. You could have your own thread to keep us upto date and we could help by giving childish hints and tips!! And in the meantime you are earning interest on Gordon Browns money - how good is that :w00t:
Kent Fox Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 Perhaps just the Customs bit and not the Tax bit. Surely that would be fun..
Nationwider Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 Perhaps just the Customs bit and not the Tax bit.Surely that would be fun.. They have the real "kick yer door down and lock you up" power. No messin' with those chaps.
l444ry Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 They are utter shitbags. One year my company had a random tax inspection. They found one item of £500 which should not have been claimed as a business expense. Although our accountant was clearly told this item was not a business expense he still put it into the figures. I ended up paying tax on the £500, which wasn't an issue...........but it cost three times that in accountancy bills to prove no other mistakes were made. Needless to say, the accountant is an ex-accountant now.
Daggers Posted 9 August 2007 Author Posted 9 August 2007 They have the real "kick yer door down and lock you up" power. No messin' with those chaps. I can imagine you as a macho 'kick yer door in' Inland Revenue officer. Macho at the coffee machine, macho at the photocopier and macho at lunch with a Tupperware box. So macho.
Nationwider Posted 9 August 2007 Posted 9 August 2007 Big and strong, enough to turn me on. I dominate the biscuit tin with a haughty disdain for "own brand" biscuitry. Still, papers to shuffle, pens to push, stationary to rearrange......
