Personally i think Rooney isn't suited to our style of play he always comes too deep and with Lampard and Gerrard its like having 3 players fighting it out for one position. Owen and Heskey have again reminded people on how well they compliment each other as seen in Owens goal where Heskey drew out the defenders and flicked it on for Owen in acres of space. If either Crouch, Defoe, Rooney or Johnson start in front of Heskey it will be an outrage. Its not about keeping your 'superstars' happy its about playing the best TEAM. While i'm on that subject Barry was outstanding again. His workrate, Set pieces were all a differant class and on top of that he bossed the midfield. For me he must start ahead of Hargreaves and most certainly Lampard. Wright-Phillips is starting to show his worth on current form he should be ahead of Becks and Lennon.

Mabe its because he is older. The team to be changed little for the big games but squad players need to be given a run out in emergancy. Replacements need to be similar in playing style than those being replaced to maintain understanding on the pitch.

Apart from Ashley Cole and the odd appearance of Downing, we have missed a left-footed player who is not good at set-pieces, but one in midfield whose body shape is obviously different to a right footed player thus giving us different angles to pass the ball. Gareth Barry was immense and I dont care how good Hargreaves has been or how good Lampard is domestically, he must stay in the side. I`d also keep Heskey in and play Rooney on the left instead of Cole. I think he can play that position but the last two games have shown that we have missed that target man presence who not only is good in the air but fast, mobile and very strong, something that Peter Crouch isnt (although he is OK) Gary Neville has hopefully played his last game for England and Becks should not be selected anymore IMO. I say that not because of his ability but the fact that he is playing with and against D1 players and the jet lag that inevitably will be within him after traveling back from the States. Let Lennon, SWP, Pennant and Bentley fight for the right mid possie.

Simon Posted 12 September 2007 Posted 12 September 2007 The big man was immense tonight; just goes to show how much of a good understanding he and Owen have with each other. Would give MOTM to Barry though; he was fooking everywhere tonight! He did the Hargreaves/Carrick role better than either of them for England, and got us moving going forwards too. How anyone can replace these two is beyond me. We made a pretty useful Russia side look ordinary at the back (although IMO they looked pretty tasty going forwards).
