Why do we hate our top talents?

Take Lewis Hamilton for example..

There's a hate page somewhere the internet called "We-Hate-Lewis-Hamilton".

Why? Because the commentators never shut up about him. Is that a valid reason to hate him?

I've also heard complaints that he's too aggressive. So what? They don't realise how boring racing would be if cars back off if a faster car was behind them.

Italians love Ferrari and the Germans love Schumacher. Why are we different?

It's only a select few I think to be honest.

I only know of one person who "hates" Hamilton and that's just NSLL of this forum. :dunno:

England loves the underdog.

When that underdog becomes good, they start hating him too.

Something like that anyway......

Thats very sad.seriously. :(

Hamilton has the potential to be a great racing driver

Surely he's something to be proud of.

Or as a nation would we prefer 'sportspeople' like Zara Phillips who i think was "BBC sportsperson' of the year last year???

Anyone who signs that is just a sour jealous person.

Its like, liking a band before they get popular but once they get really big people start to hate them.

Thall shalt not stop liking a band just because they’ve become popular ;)

i know...its amazing isn't it??

wasting time talking about Hamilton!

Pfffttt its as if hes' challenging for the World Championship in his rookie year!

They should be talking about Baricello and all them at the back of the grid.

People really want to know about them....don't they????:rolleyes:

I wasn't aware of any backlash against Hamilton, but as someone said it seems part of the British psyche to enjoy seeing people fall from grace. I hope he gets the title next week, especially as Alonso seems to have turned into a whiney cry baby tosser

I hate that comment on there. To be honest the commentators talk about Hamilton because he's english and its an english broadcast. In the olympics when the marathons on, the commentators talk mainly about Paula Radcliffe and her chances of winning but no one would moan about that.

I take part in a little tipping competition and have been arguing with lad for a while now. He really dislikes Hamilton, and says that he thinks he's "bigger than the sport", "cocky", "arrogant" and "has a nasty streak".

Sure he's a confident lad, but you have to ask is it needed to be at the top? Surely it is.

Absolutely it is.

It takes a very special type of person to be leading a Grand Prix World Championship going into the final race on your Formula 1 debut.

He deserves praise and nothing else.

(even if the team did cheat a bit...)

There's no proof that the creator of that page is even English - could be Spanish, Finnish or Italian, and therefore would have plenty of reasons to be jealous of Hamilton.

I'd imagine Walkers did click on the link to his profile where it does actually confirm he's English.

Phil Nunes is a particularly Finnish name though, I'll give you that.

People would doubtless deny it but to me its mostly jealousy and envy.

It's all around us - the car industry revolves around it.

"Be one up with this model or that, you'll be the envy of your mates," is the message constantly pumped out in the motoring media because they know people want to be considered "successful" and that others will aspire to being even more successful if they see their friends out in a top-of-the-range car.

With top sportsmen it is not just their talent that's envied but the lifestyle and privileged treatment that goes with it.

To be like them, ordinary people leave themselves almost skint because they are prepared to pay sums like £250/£350 a month to hire purchase a car that looks flash and suits the image they want to convey.

But underneath they know it is just that, an image. They are pretending to be wealthy and successful. They know that with the top sportsmen that wealth and success is real.

Some people get jealous of that. But many others just enjoy the days they have life and breath for their own sake. They live within their means and instead of being envious they applaud and feel uplited by people's success.

It doesn't matter what the page owner's nationality is - the fact is that most people commenting/are part of the hate club are British.
