Vacamion Posted 12 October 2007 Posted 12 October 2007 cigarettes are legal but people still smuggle them in and sell them tax free. Completely different situation with cigarattes, though. Cigarettes cost buttons to make and are very heavily taxed. So heavily taxed, in fact, that it adds up to a partial prohibition. The government has admitted that it puts up tax on cigarettes in part to encourage people to give up. If chocolate were taxed to the same degree as cigarettes, I would expect to see people smuggling cheap versions of that in too. If they legalise drugs and then tax them as much as cigarettes, it won't discourage the smuggling and dealing that currently goes on, so would defeat the object of the exercise. Legalise drugs, then sell them dirt cheap. If adults, in full possession of the facts about the effects of drugs, want to kill themselves/ruin their health/ease their pain in the privacy of their own homes, they should be allowed to do so. They currently can do all of this with bottled bleach, cigarettes and alcohol. It'll never happen though.
Steven Posted 12 October 2007 Posted 12 October 2007 Decriminalise all drugs and sell them in state run drug shops.Legalise for over 18s the taking in private of all substances sold by these state run drug shops, where drugs are sold for a small profit, but still vastly undercut the criminals and put them out of business. Mandatory 15 years, served in full, for anyone running/selling drugs illegally after this. Severe punishment for anyone causing death, injury or damage whilst under the influence of any substance sold by the state run drug shops. Health education programme in schools outlining the medical, psychological and ethical issues that arise from the use of intoxicating substances. Chances of our Nanny state actually letting adults decide for themselves what they put in their own bodies = nil. That is far too sensible and will therefore never see the light of day.
