Brainy Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 And i'm not saying this because we've lost to Russia. We are now relying on another team to slip up so we can take advantage. Russia, Croatia, Israel, Macedonia, Estonia and Andorra. Two qualification places up for grabs and lets be honest, out of them six countries, we only have two challenging us. So who'll qualify? Well us, being the great footballing nation we are, and Russia/Croatia. At this point, I'm not fussed that we won't qualify. I'd rather just take next summer off. Then when McClaren gets sacked, appoint a new manager, let him settle in and prepare for the World Cup qualifiers. I wish we had the same fighting spirit the rugby team have.

Sure, he's tactically naiive, picks underperforming players and is always inanely grinning like he's inserted some love eggs, but the players must take some responsibility as well. Although I've never approved of the appointment of McClaren or many of his team selections, many the squads that he has used in the qualifying stages should rout the likes of Macedonia, Russia, and Israel. That has been the problem with the press since the appointment. After the game away to Andorra, the papers were full of doom and gloom, but after a 3-0 victory against Estonia away, all of a sudden the man is a God and should be worshipped by all. I can't name 5 Estonian players, England should get into double figures, not 3 fooking 0. My main annoyance, though, is the executives at the FA for letting all this shit happen. They shouldn't have been rushed into making an appointment when they cocked up the Scolari deal, and the reasons they gave for choosing McClaren were ludicrous ("he familiar with the set-up", when the set-up was clearly what was wrong!) Yes, McClaren out, but Barwick out as well.

Yeah, apart from that, I can't really see any bad results from us really. Maybe failure to go to tough places like Russia & croatia and come away with a draw is what has cost us?

I'm not saying we gotta win it, but at least have a go at it. We should be challengers. Under Sven we grinded out results and played anti-football. We got away with it against minnows in the qualification but once we reached the WC or Euro's it was quite clear we had no chance of winning anything.

No, I wouldn't fire McClaren because I wouldn't have chosen the tosser in the first place. All he did at Boro was spend the chairman's money. The FA said that he had gotten Boro to an FA Cup semi. Didn't Pardew get West Ham to the final in their first year in the Premiership? McClaren shouldn't be sacked for one game, he should be sacked because of the awful way his teams play, the fact that he is clearly not qualified to manage at that level, and the fact that he doesn't stand up the "big-name" stars (albeit keeping Barry instead of Lampard was a wise decision), and that some of his selections are absolutely beyond belief. David James had one of his finest seasons in his career and I feel that Scott Carson is one of the most underrated players in the Premiership at the minute, yet McClaren sticks with butterfingers Robinson. This, despite the fact that stats prove that he is one of the worst keepers in the league in terms of positioning, and just this year he has made several clangers, his reactions are also some of the worst I've ever seen. That is why I'd sack the cnut.

Joe. Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 At the beginning of his reign McLaren made some very odd decisions (player selections etc) which seemed very poor decisions at the time. Lately he's been pretty decent in my eyes, picking the right players and not being afraid to drop players like Lampard. But for what this qualifying campaign has been like in general he's been very poor. If we don't qualify with the squad we've got then serious questions about the manager have to be asked. It would be harsh to direct everything at the manager though, the players have to take the majority of the blame. If they can't beat teams like Macedonia, struggle past Andorra and get rolled over by Croatia comfortably and Russia then they don't deserve to be at those finals next year.

His team seletions havn't been too bad i.e. keeping faith with Barry and SWP but the lack of motivation is so evident. Time for a fresh start a world class manager in whos proven at the top level. Mourinho possibly would get my vote. Personally we're as good as out of Euro 08 and I'm sure Mclaren will get the boot anyway. What the national side need is a good kick up the arse, somebody who will not settle for second rate performances and somebody to finally get the best out of these players. Now I don't think we're world beaters and I wouldn't put us in the top 12 of world football currently but Russia and Croatia FFS!!! I know little about rugby and rarely follow it but looking back on this week and hearing about how we've defined the odds to make the world cup final it seems to be the exact opposite to the football. If only the footy team had the same passion as the Rugby guys.

We need a manager that believes in the players abilities so much that he send his team out, home and away with the intentions of winning and creating loads of chances and not with this rear-guard mentality that we always seem to display. Its got to be a foreign manager, maybe a Rijkaard or another manager who is well known for fielding teams that love to attack. I`d have said Wenger but he wont be up for it Im sure. Get rid of McClaren as us not being in the top two is a disgrace. The good news is Greece won in Turkey
Durnerz Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 He's been a mix of good and bad McClaren IMO. Hes a coach, not a manager. Its almost as if hes realised it far too late to get our qualifying campaign back on track by dropping Lampard for Barry but then I look back when I was at the Macedonia game at the clueless side of McClarens management 'skills' and seeing horrifying similarities with our own Rob Kelly at the time. Macedonia could have even won that game we were that bad. I said from the beginning that McClaren was never the right appointment in the first place given what was on offer at the time (Scolari, Hiddink etc) as the whole point of getting rid of Sven was to get someone who could take us that extra mile, not the last 16, not the quarters but either Semi's or better. McClaren was never going to be that and until we get rid of the idiots that appointed this idiot, we will be a long time in waiting for any success.
