Hugo Sanchez Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 Chambers has been one of our better players this season even though he hasn't played in his favourite right back position. He is a hardworking centre midfield but not the sort of guy who can open a defence up or smash one in from 25 yards. Still he has to do what the manager says and he's just got on with it and done a ok job there. I hope Oliie plays him at right back though.
Fox You Forest Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 Shouldn't ever footballer be happy just to be playing. It's a characteristic in a football i wish to see more often from a player. It might make the player happy, but its a team game and there's no doubt in my mind our teams suffering because of it.
Webbo Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 What does piss me off though is that I rate him far above Stearman and yet it is the lanky one who always gets the nod on him for selection. That I simply can not fathom. Perhaps you're wrong.
Thracian Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 It always make me laugh when analogies are used for football. Must admit that is a particularly weak one.Football is not a normal profession - you're paid good money and you're in the public eye. Bearing in mind the way football has moved on in terms of fitness and nutrition, footballers shouldn't really be out on the piss win, lose (or mostly draw) in the season. It's also a question of respect for the supporters. They've paid their money to watch them play and then see the same players pissing it up against the wall. Are you seriously saying that if we had a 21st century Frank Worthington who had a few on a Friday and entertained us with his trademark goals on Saturday that the fans would care? If only! I'd rather have a team full of players who were masters of their craft like Worthington or even Walsh than any of the super-fit, wonderfully nourished and over pampered so-called athletes that we have wearing our shirt today. And IF all this pampering worked so well, how come we get so many injuries at the club whenever we play more than two matches a week? In fact some of our fit and nourished signings lately couldn't even get fit enough for 90 minutes of a reserves match let alone a first team test. The revellers of the 60's might have pissed some up the wall but they'd also play three matches in four or five days of a holiday programme at a time when bodily contact wasn't all but banned and you were guaranteed a whacking every match.

But be fair Thracian the pace of the game has gone up to the days you're referring to. There's none of the passing back to the keeper, he picks it up, bounces it, passes to his full back, he passes back over and over again non-sense now. I don't think there's as many 'piss heads' at the top of the game these days. I doubt we'll see another George Best or Gazza, it won't be allowed to happen surely? Part of me wonders if injuries these days are caused by over training - pushing your body to its limits each day can't be good in the long run - we've heard more heart problems happening recently, which is quite shocking. I get what you're saying - but I bet the pamerped youngsters would run rings round Wortho with a hangover.

Get with the times, Thracian. It's 2008 not 1968. As Bigal says, the game has moved on - ex players regularly recognise this too.
Alexikokopops Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 Couldn't agree more. You left this behind at the QPR game
johnnycash Posted 11 January 2008 Author Posted 11 January 2008 Went down the training ground the other day. Chambers played Centre-back and Right-Midfield. He never played once at Right-Back. This is a nonesense when apart from a few games over Christmas, Stearman has been a regular liability. If Chambers isn't trained in his rightful position, then how will Ollie ever know what he can do there? (I refer to the original ratings of a few Watford fans, which suggest that he is a quality player at Right-Back in this position).

Were they at all impressive or did they look rubbish???
