This playing players out of position business!

Following our last two dismall displays, I took the liberty of chatting to two friends of mine who are supporters of Watford. They asked me how James Chambers was getting on, as they feel they really miss his contribution at RIGHT-BACK!

I told them I couldn't comment on his performaces at Right-Back as he never plays there. They smirked when I told them where he had played the majority of his games!

As the conversation developed I asked them to rate Chambers as a player in the various positions he played in for Watford. Their ratings were extremely revealing:

Central Midfielder - 3 (Comment - 'Whatever you do, don't play him there. He'll run a round a lot, but that's about it')

Right-Midfield - 5.5 (Pacey and hard-working, but lacks the quality to regularly deliver from the by-line. They did say he was outstanding in this position on occasions, most notably in their play-off success a couple of years ago)

Left-Back - 6 (Adequate as a stop gap, when your regular left-back is injured).

But here's the clincher - their rating of Chambers as a CHAMPIONSHIP Right-Back = 8!! (Yes, Eight - and they would have him back tomorrow!!). So why the hell aren't we playing him there, when our present right-back isn't one?

It's not just Holloway either. Successive managers have played him there.

He might be partly to blame though if he's said he's happy to play there (perhaps realising the amount of right backs at the club).

Sooner we get him back to right back the better.

Rumour has it, that he hasn't trained in the right-back position since Oliie arrived. If that is true, then what chance has the lad got?

Shocking management in my view!!

It does seem to be the business LCFC are in, I have my doubts that we're in the playing football to win business.

i have respect for players like Chambers. We havnt once heard even one utterings of discontent from him for playing out of position.

Not that its ideal of course- 11 players playing where they are supposed to play will give the team more fluidity..

EDIT: infact, not many of the players at all have grumbled about being part of such a up and down season... they must of had their tits thrown about a bit but they havnt complained at all..

Playing players in their rightful positions is so last season. All the top managers are looking to play them out of position. It's the "done thing".

Definitly agree with the Central Midfield and Right midfield ones.

I'm not sure how much store to put into that rumour seeing as IH himself was played out of position for a long time in his career at Brentford and it all but killed his spirit - I can't see him replicating that mistake without a reason.

What does piss me off though is that I rate him far above Stearman and yet it is the lanky one who always gets the nod on him for selection. That I simply can not fathom.

Stearman has the odd good game but mostly plays poor. Chambers put in a decent performance at right back against Blackpool and hasn't played there since. I feel sorry for the lad.

Stearman has cost us many times this season and it is beyond me as to why he is still in the team. I'm not saying he's not a good player bt he isn't performing to his best so shouldn't be picked.

I think OH plays him there because he has little options when Weso is short of fitness and Clem was struggling with form. I too know that he is our best right back. If we have to? play players out of position then why not Stearman as he did all right in cent mid vs Villa, and he's not exactly excelling at the moment is he!

Every time I see him at right back I'm impressed, I'd play him ahead of Stearman any day.

One thing going for Stearman - he's got a few goals - He's not far off being our top scorer.

In the times I've seen Stearman play I've felt he's good going forward - no without any wide men, we need at least a right back getting to the line and attempting to cross don't we?

Always thought he was out of positon i think we should try him left back and see for ourselves if he is any good there

Who else could we play in midfield at the time?

stearman's regressed since his first full season.

don't know the lad but did see him larging it in life one saturday after we'd lost. always annoys me to see players getting tanked up and partying when they've lost.

was Chambers right back or right mid when we tanked watford?, remember him bombing up and down the right hand sidw with acres of space.

maybe Stearman can play up front and we can convert Howard or Hayles ro right back?

So what you're saying is that if I go out market trading and have a shit day for whatever reason I should tell my family or my pals that whatever was planned for the evening is off cos I've decided to be miserable.

Or if I was a footballer who'd ran myself silly and got kicked black and blue I should stay at home afterwards if we'd lost 1-0 because the sodding referee had given a penaltyhe shouldn't have done and reduced our team to 10 men.

Get real. Most self respecting footballers do their level best in a game if for no other reason than to collect their win bonuses but I'm bloody sure they've got every right to enjoy their leisure time as they like.

And normally, the night after a match is considered leisure time.

bloody hell. mate - are you alright? a valid, pun-free point, on topic, in the LCFC forum....

Him and Kenton seem to be happy to play wherever. With Weso unfit we lack anyone else to play alongside clemence

vs southamption - Stearnan, weso King, Sheehan = top notch

It always make me laugh when analogies are used for football. Must admit that is a particularly weak one.

Football is not a normal profession - you're paid good money and you're in the public eye. Bearing in mind the way football has moved on in terms of fitness and nutrition, footballers shouldn't really be out on the piss win, lose (or mostly draw) in the season.

It's also a question of respect for the supporters. They've paid their money to watch them play and then see the same players pissing it up against the wall.

I'm going to echo Scoweh here:

They don't - they hold resonsibilities to the supporters as part of the unwritten terms of their contract with the club.

If you fail to understand this Thracian then you are as stupid as Stearman.

I play amateur sport on a saturday and get f*#cked off when I lose. Then to drive to the city and see them lose (allbeit, granted they are trying) puts me in an even worse mood.

Now I know I am being a tit for then being mardy for the rest of the weekend but having been dragged out by my mates, I would like to see footballers acting as if they have respect for the fans i.e. not getting aholed and seeming to not care.

Sport is not a proper job, it is getting paid for a hobby. Maybe I'm just jealous...

btw, prior to the Hungarians, I would rather have seen Stearman on the right wing, not natural but he does like attacking and it would hide the mistakes he has made this season. I do think he still has potential.

Shouldn't ever footballer be happy just to be playing.

It's a characteristic in a football i wish to see more often from a player.
