"Brazilian legend Pele will unveil a statue of Stoke City and England goalkeeper Gordon Banks in the city this summer, it has been revealed.

The pair met in the 1970 World Cup when Banks made what is widely regarded as one of the greatest saves ever from a Pele header.

Now it has emerged the Brazilian will visit the city on 12 July to unveil the statue outside the Britannia Stadium.

World Cup winner Banks played for Stoke City from 1967 to 1972.

Pele previously visited Stoke-on-Trent in 1969 when his side Santos played a friendly against Stoke City, winning 3-2, the Brazilian legend scoring twice past Banks.

The statue of the goalkeeper, who also played for Leicester City and Chesterfield during his career, is the brainchild of Irish author Don Mullen who has written a book about the star called The Hero Who Could Fly.

He is looking to raise £350,000 to pay for the statue which will be made by local artist Andrew Edwards."

why dont we unveil statues of our legends like banks lineker elliott etc around our ground, like they have at old trafford?

any thoughts?

Surely he is just as much a leicester legend. He still lives around here and stuff doesn't he?

damn right he is, he made 300 odd appearances for us, much more than he did for stoke.

not sure where he is now, but we should do something

Wasn't a statue planned for outside the Walkers? But the fiances were such (what with administration and everything) that it was never realized... as it is I'd say Banks was easily as much a Leicester legend as any other team (TBH it's kinda annoying that Stoke are treating him as one of their own :( ), but Sep Smith or Gary sound like the obvious candidates for a statue outside the ground?

Must admit it's noticeable going to other grounds with their statues outside the ground and nothing of that sort outside the walkers... then again there are more pressing things in need of investment before we start casting a massive bronze statue.

I am sure he was a Leicester player when he won the world cup..Hes a Leicester legend so it should be in Leicester. :bounce:

Yep was at Leicester when England won the world cup. So it should be here.

And when you consider the cost of a statue against player wages... it's nothing is it?

Perhaps we should have an All-time Best XI statue, we got plenty of room, picked by popular vote of the city fans. If they charged you to vote, say a pound a time, the statue would pay for itself! (Look at what people are willing to spend voting for cabaret-class acts on X-factor, et al)

Do we have an All-time Best XI thread anywhere?

yeh it would make our stadium look mint if we had some statues outside.

its not stoke's fault - good on them for giving credit to a great man. sheffield also have a tribute to him in the city centre. its up to us to make a tribute to him and we havent. i know we need to get players in asap but we should also not forget what type of club we are and that he deserves it.

banks only played 23 times for chesterfield and he made his name at city. he also made 100 more appearances for us than he did at stoke and won the world cup as a city lad so we should give him credit where credits due.

It says they're looking to raise £350,000 for the statue.

That'd pay for a year of a player's wages if they were on £6700 per week.

Substantial enough I'd say.

So we get rid of Hammond, get a statue instead... RESULT!

We could even play the statue up front and it would be more effective! :D
