davieG Posted 31 January 2008 Author Posted 31 January 2008 If anyone wants to participate in the inaugural debate let me know and the subject you are either for or against.
Daggers Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 How about this for the first one? Are male eggs and female sperm on the horizon? * 02 February 2008 * Peter Aldhous * Magazine issue 2641 "FEMALE sperm", "male eggs" and "same-sex reproduction" - whether these terms fill you with hope or disgust, a reproductive revolution is already in progress. In a handful of labs across the world, biologists are trying to make genetically male cells develop into eggs, and female cells into sperm. If successful, their efforts might one day allow lesbian and gay couples to have children that are genetically their own. Now Greg Aharonian, a patent analyst from San Francisco, is trying to patent the technologies that could make this possible. In part, Aharonian's goal is to stimulate debate. He argues that lesbians and gay men have a right to know about developments in biology that could allow same-sex reproduction. Aharonian also wants to undermine the argument that marriage should remain an exclusively heterosexual institution because its main purpose is procreation. "I'm a troublemaker," he admits. Lillehamring Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 How about this for the first one? Source: New Scientist eww, just the thought of this is unthinkable... what a putrid notion.... i could debate against this, but i'd probably expose myself as some ultra-conservative, daily mail reading, inhuman fascist... so. i'll just say, again. eww.
Thracian Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 Ok here's the idea we select a number of 'controversial' issues with two volunteers to lead the for and against arguments; at the end of each debate a poll is taken to see what the overall view is.Process: Nominate Issues Vote on the most popular one to be discussed Identify a proposer/seconder for/against each proposal They send me their statements/arguments I create a thread with these in which is then opened up for people to respond After a suitable period the discussion is closed and a voting thread opened. Suggestions for debating: University education should be fully funded by the state Prostitution should be a legal occupation Marijuana should be made legal You should pass some form of IQ test before being allowed to vote at local and national election Organised religion is flawed 'Cosmetic' surgery should be banned Marriage Is An Outdated, Outmoded And Impractical Idea Let me know if you're interested in being a proposer/seconder for/against and what subject you'd like to get involved in. Feel free to suggest other subjects. If you got any thoughts on making this run better post them as well. :D Still a basically brilliant idea though, one of the best I've seen on here.
Hullfox Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 If anyone wants to participate in the inaugural debate let me know and the subject you are either for or against. I'm definitely for the IQ one.
davieG Posted 1 February 2008 Author Posted 1 February 2008 I'm definitely for the IQ one. Anyone want to take Hullfox on with a 1 man/woman 1 vote platform - no IQ test required to take part
Daggers Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 Anyone want to take Hullfox on with a 1 man/woman 1 vote platform - no IQ test required to take part Come again?
Head Honcho Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 Are we going to have a poll before and after the debate to gauge how views change?
davieG Posted 1 February 2008 Author Posted 1 February 2008 Are we going to have a poll before and after the debate to gauge how views change? It's a nice thought but would only be valid if the same people voted before and after obviously something we can't guarantee, so probably not. Just afterwards I think. Of course if the proposers and the againster (anyone know if they have a specific name) insist I'm quite happy to oblige.
davieG Posted 1 February 2008 Author Posted 1 February 2008 Come again? I'll leave that up to the debaters
Daggers Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 Are we going to have a clear idea of the topic for debate?
davieG Posted 1 February 2008 Author Posted 1 February 2008 Are we going to have a clear idea of the topic for debate? If I understand correctly Hullfox has agreed to speak for this proposal: You should pass some form of IQ test before being allowed to vote at local and national election. I now need at least one person to oppose the motion. It would also be good, but not essential to have two seconders.
Benji Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 The only ones going to argue against that have bits of grass hanging from their lower lip. I beg to differ; most of the best footballers, managers and genius' of the game are in that subject, brilliant. Outside of football though, they are as thick as dog sh1t, take people on here as a prime example. However, as a football forum, what does an IQ test have to do with it, I'm sure David Beckham would score about 30 yet i'd value his opinion?
davieG Posted 2 February 2008 Author Posted 2 February 2008 What form does the debate take? More or less as this
Ultra Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 If I understand correctly Hullfox has agreed to speak for this proposal:You should pass some form of IQ test before being allowed to vote at local and national election. I now need at least one person to oppose the motion. It would also be good, but not essential to have two seconders. I'll oppose. Not because Hullfox is proposing it, I genuinely don't agree with the idea.
Rincewind Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 Whats the IQ limit? as far as I'm aware prisonors and inmate of mental institutions do not vote anyway. Does it appy to standing for election as well? I'm not volunteering BTW. Just putting forward a couple of rash thoughts.
Daggers Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 More or less as this Opera illegal value 12! Duff URL.
Phube Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 TBH I really believe some kind of test should be introduced before people can vote... IQ or even a quick few questions about politics in general!! Like who is the chancellor etc.!
davieG Posted 2 February 2008 Author Posted 2 February 2008 TBH I really believe some kind of test should be introduced before people can vote...IQ or even a quick few questions about politics in general!! Like who is the chancellor etc.! Hey up Phube save it for the debate please.
davieG Posted 2 February 2008 Author Posted 2 February 2008 Opera illegal value 12! Duff URL. Oh well my first post in this thread was the link.
Phube Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 Hey up Phube save it for the debate please. What debate, where... I only read the first and last post...
Daggers Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 I would like a debate to end all speculation that the Wii is in anyway better than the 360. And Phube should be made to argue for the 360.
davieG Posted 2 February 2008 Author Posted 2 February 2008 What debate, where... I only read the first and last post... I guess that's the point it hasn't started and it would be nice for you to wait that was all.
