MARCUSLCFC Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 I'd say go with the PUG 306, I've had 4 over the years both the turbo diesel and the XSI (petrol) both reliable and fun cars you can even put a dump valve on the turbo diesel to make it sound super chav...although... pug's are known for dodgy electrics so make sure you test out the car thoroughly before making a purchase. As stated above though dont spend too much on your first motor as you'll more than likely write it off in the first 6 months and also think about points on your licence dont go drivin like a joy rider..(elder fatherly type rant over..ha) Happy Hunting !
Thracian Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 I have JUST passed my test!! Finally.....!!So what car do i go for as my first car... I dont really want anything too flash, just a small engine, and cheap on the insurance!! Any advice would be great!! Reliant Robin? Seriously, I know they're the subject of jest but Skoda's are brilliant. Low-cost and they just seem to run for ever without the least trouble. If you're Leicestershire based and need a contact who'll get you one at the right price, check it over and probably service/maintain it just PM me. Then you could perhaps work up to a 1936 Auburn Speedster.
act smiley Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 To be honest, I'd reccomend getting a cheap car and third party, fire and theft insurance - OK, if you crash your car into someone else then you won't get it repaired but if you don't you save big money on the insurance and if your car is worth less than a grand then the payout they'd give you if you got comprehensive cover would barely go above the amount you'd save anyway. Thing with insurance is that its not all about engine size, a lot of it is about risk profiles. A Citroen Saxo for example, has a fairly high insurance rate relative to other cars for a young man because of all the chavs that buy a 1.1, stick a VTR bodykit on and crash it straight into the nearest tree. Meanwhile, a Rover with more power than a Saxo VTR can cost less than the Saxo 1.1 to insure because they're all driven by old people and how many boy racers do you know who'd be seen driving around in an old Rover?! As to car reccomendations, for less than a grand you can get a nice one of these: Ford Fiesta 1.25 mk4/5- nice little car, good to drive, cheap to run. Slightly pricier to buy for what you get, but they're good. Make sure you get the 1.25 16v engine not the 1.3 8v, as its much better in every way. Peugeot 306 1.9DT. They might have a reputation for dodgy electrics, but the turbodiesel engines are pretty much indestructable. They're nice on the inside with plenty of space, are cheap and go well. Not been in the 1.4 but I hear its not as good as the turbodiesel. Rover 214 mk3 - Don't laugh these things are suprisingly good and because everyone thinks they all explode every second of the day they're dirt cheap. OK, you need to be careful when looking at 'em but if you get a good one they're no more unreliable than any other small old car, they're pretty good to drive with a smooth and powerful engine (well, for a 1.4!), very comfy for a fairly small car, and because they're all owned by grandma's they're a low insurance risk. Avoid: Vauxhall Corsa - those things are absolutely rubbish. Bodyroll that makes it feel like you're driving a jellymould, crashy suspension, cheap interior, no power and they don't even make up for it by being cheaper or more reliable than the competition. No reason to get one when there's so much better cars out there for the money. Ford Escort - the only reason to buy one of these is they're incredibly cheap. They're not terrible cars, but they're not good at anything either - if you can't find anything particuarly good and find a nice condition one of these for under £500 then its worth a look, any more than that and you can do better.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 Get one of these! I'm old enough to remember these coming out. 'It's too radical!' they cried. We can laugh about it now
Bellend Sebastian Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 Avoid:Vauxhall Corsa - those things are absolutely rubbish. Bodyroll that makes it feel like you're driving a jellymould, crashy suspension, cheap interior, no power and they don't even make up for it by being cheaper or more reliable than the competition. No reason to get one when there's so much better cars out there for the money. They're not that bad! My g/f's is admittedly not the greatest drive but it's got to well over 90,000 miles without anything major going wrong. Cheap as chips. We're going back a few years admittedly but when I was looking at Rovers the insurance was massive compared to Fords and Vauxhalls. I was told this was because of the old expensive parts thing. No wonder nobody bought them
act smiley Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 Its a bit higher if you get it comprehensive, but if you get it third party fire and theft like most people do for a banger first car its cheaper because the cost of a new bumper from a dealer doesn't matter, which is what drives up the comprehensive prices and they're a low risk thing because its an old persons' car. For me it was like £1500 3PFT for a Rover, £2300 Fully Comp, £1700 3PFT, £2100 fully comp on a Fiesta. Insurance is utterly weird to price up because of all the variables involved, I know people with big old cars (including one guy who had a 2-litre Sierra ) while under 20 who insured them for less than small cars, the only way to know what its going to cost really is to get a quote from a couple of insurers as they all have different priorities. The Corsa is the worst car I've ever driven! OK, they are reasonably reliable but not exceptionally so, I know someone with one and its gone wrong a fair bit but nothing too drastically bad. I just don't see what the redeeming features are, cause they cost more to buy, cost the same to run, have average reliability and yet aren't any good to drive!

I dont really want anything too flash, just a small engine, and cheap on the insurance!! Any advice would be great!! Congratulations Something cheap and cheerful as you are bound to get in a scrape or two in the first year and doing the scraping with a decent car would not be great on your pocket.
Darkzzz_ Posted 7 February 2008 Author Posted 7 February 2008 Thanks for all the response.... I will take all of it on board...!! I dont want to go over a grand for my first car as a few of you have said anyway!! I need something reliable, that i can get by in for a while until i get something a bit better. I need to get some experience first anyway...!! Besides, i aint one of these bad boy low rider types with the tints and the big rims.... i am against that... infact i hate it.... I will prob be one of them very cautious drivers.... not a show off!! Being a show off in a car usually lands you on a cold slab in the mortuary!!! I dont want to be there yet thats for sure....! I heard that march is a great time to look for a bargain, as the number plate change pushes a lot of people to by new cars and trade in there old ones... So i suppose i will have to wait for now... But im sure you will agree its better to wait and get something half decent, than rush it and get a pile of shite!!

Scow Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 Congratulations! It gives you a right buzz. I passed my test in October, but I got my first car last month. It's an N reg Corsa 1.2 petrol and it's running ok so far - really good on fuel. My insurance was surprisingly low - £600 fully comp, but that's probably because I'm 23. It would have cost more to have 3rd party.
Raj Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 My 1st car was a Talbot samba and cost £950. It was a pile of fcuking shit.
