Thracian Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 Mrs stays put. SHE can cook....well......just about!!! :D That reminds me of my old dad. He used to say "Educated women? So long as they learn to do everything that rhymes with "ook" they'll be a good un, son." For a while I thought cooking and working, or wooking as he called it, were the only things that mattered. I just didn't see book-keeping as really rhyming. :D
danny. Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 I'd love a woman who was good at book-keeping. can but dream...
Guest seanfox778 Posted 8 February 2008 Posted 8 February 2008 I got a Renault Clio for my 1st car and that was 2 1/2 years ago and it's been so reliable only a 1.2 litre engine got it for £900, unfortunatley your first years insurance no matter what car you get is going to be expensive.

Expensive? You can buy a house and land in some parts of Bulgaria for not much more than that.
DanTheFoxBhoy Posted 8 February 2008 Posted 8 February 2008 Second hand 1994 Subaru Liberty was my first car. Took out a loan for $10,000 and paid it off over a few years through part-time work at uni. Still have her and she runs a treat. Better than spending a lot on shit car after shit car plus repairs because the car is shit.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 8 February 2008 Posted 8 February 2008 Realible and manly car got it 3 years ago as me first car runs like a charm touch wood *touches head*

wirralsimon Posted 8 February 2008 Posted 8 February 2008 Whatever you buy check the insurance before you commit yourself. Getting your first policy is really expensive these days. You will need something small with a small engine at forst to keep the costs down. I have a Corsa and it's fine, you should also consider the Fiesta or Micra, or as Thracian says the more modern Skodas are better than most people say they are. Make sure you get someone 'in the know' to look at the car first as I didn't when I started driving and ended up with a really cr*p unrelaible car! We pay our local mechanic a couple of hours labour to have a good look, costs us £30 a time but it's money well spent. Spend some time browsing http://www.Parkers.co.uk Other things to look for to make sure you are not being fleeced: For a private sale, if the name on the logbook isn't the name of the person selling the car, walk away. (I once came very badly unstuck by not obeying this simple rule). Ask to see any old MOT's or check in the glove compartmrent to see if they are there. If they have a higher mileage written on them than is on the car itself walk away. If you are spending more than a few hundred get an HPI check done to ensure it's never been an insurance write-off. Finally remember it's a buyers market. There are hundreds of cars out there that are small cars with a small engine, cheap to ensure and in nice looking condition. If anything at all about the car you are considering or who you are buying from makes you uneasy, move on. There is no rush! Good luck! Simon

Why would you buy a car that you havent even reseached? There decent and quick cars, but anything below a 52 plate really are shit. People think that even if they have an old shit BMW they look decent, they really really dont. I'm a fan of the 1 series. I wouldn't mind getting a 120d in 18 months time. At least then I will be a bit older to afford the insurance.
Scow Posted 8 February 2008 Posted 8 February 2008 It's also important to try and buy a car with a full service history. Luckily I was able to do that. I got my car for a knock down price of £400 because it was from a friend of the family, who have had the car from new. Just had the car serviced today and found out that there is a gear linkage fault - so that's going to cost me £200! But you're always taking a risk with an older car and it could have been much worse.
danny. Posted 8 February 2008 Posted 8 February 2008 the 330ci is a lovely car, I'm not a fan of the newest shape 3 series but the shape before looked awsome, especially the 330cis and M3s. I think the conevrtable version looks a bit naff but the coupe is lovely and wouldn't be so noisy on a run. I was looking at getting a 330ci before I ended up buying a ZT190 as in the end a similar spec/year/mileage 330 would have been about 10k more than than a ZT wasn't really much faster or particularly handled any better, plus the servicing seemed quite expensive.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 8 February 2008 Posted 8 February 2008 1992 Lotus Carlton. Ace. Lovely at the time. About as much chance of finding a well looked after one now as you are of finding a Sierra Cosworth that hasn't been completely destroyed though
Darkzzz_ Posted 8 February 2008 Author Posted 8 February 2008 Just been offered a 1998 Renault Clio 1.2, 79,000 miles, 12 months Mot, 4 months tax, Recently serviced, £850... Just had a insurance quote for this and the cheapest was £79.08 a month. what do u think??

Not bad... I guess it takes into account the fact that you're not 17, it'd be about £400 more for someone my age. If you haven't already it's already cheaper to haggle with companies over the phone rather than do anything online.
danny. Posted 8 February 2008 Posted 8 February 2008 i seriously wouldn't!!! I had a 1.4 clio as my first car, the handling is DIRE, and I don't mean at silly speeds, just doing the speed limit 30, 40 - they are death traps, basically the wheels are too thin and the brakes so bad, even at 40 you barely ever stop it just locks up all the time. And in the wet - nightmare. Even more experienced drivers struggle with them (my friend who is 31 has one and it locks up all the time when bracking too) for a new driver you will end up crashing it within a few months (I did + many many near scrapes, and then the lad who bought it after me crashed it within 6 months) just not worth it!

Some decent advice which i shall take on board.... It's bloody hard work finding something half decent and cheap... I know shit all about cars!!

Get a quote from Direct Line if you haven't already done so - they were the cheapest for me by some distance. They're not on any comparison websites.
Daggers Posted 8 February 2008 Posted 8 February 2008 They're not on any comparison websites. I was not aware of that.
