Nigel Pearson appointed as the new Southampton manager according to SSN.

Is this his first job?

I think he will do alright there tbh.

No he was involved in one of Carlies great escapes.

Assistants don't make good managers.

Simple really. There were better options out there. Billy Davies and Ian Dowie to name two.

100% agree

Just look at Rob kelly.

They seem to be the short term answer, not long term.

Agreed.

How long is the contract?

Three year deal? Is what usually gets handed out.

If they gave him a contract until the end of the season, that would probably be best for the club. Then they can weigh up their options in the summer. Rafa Benite will be available then! Well, thinking about it, maybe they should have just waited until the middle of the week for him to become available

Wasn't Jose Morinho Bobby Robson's assistant?

Yeah, there are a select few who go on to become decent managers.

But the majority fail.

Hes on a rolling contract so probably there until the end of the season at least. Saints dont have much cash though so cant afford Dowie's/Davies'. He was manager at Carlisle about 9 years ago when Jimmy Glass came up from Goal and scored to save them from relegation. Also manager when Newcastle lost 6-0 to Man Utd

He has been an assistant for a long time and has learnt alot from some good managers so surely it is about time he takes over as a proper manager maybe you dont agree just my opinion

Could be said for a lot of assistant managers. As is the case with a lot of assistants, the transition is a hard one to make. I'm just not sure that it's "about time" he got a managers role as he has not proved himself in that area YET.

Fair point but he has to start somewhere do you think he should start of in a lower league then?

He's already had a stint with Carlisle in 1999.

That Jimmy Glass goal.

The problem with this is appointemnt is that as he's never had a number one job, Southampton fans will automaticly be un-happy with the appointment, therefore as soon as things start to go wrong, the fans will be shouting for his head. Knowing modern football he won't be given anytime and then he'll be fired, creating an unstable ship and then they're back to square one. There are a few exceptions to the rule that assistants don't make good gaffers, just look at Jose and he may do a good job, but I just feel the fans will be on his back at first oppourtunity. Saints fans will be hoping he can emulate the spectacular success of other number two's such as Chris Hutchings, Sammy Lee, Rob Kelly, Les Reed...

Well I think it would benefit his career more if he was to do that and have a proper stint there.

I know Paul Ince has had the opportunity to take many higher jobs than MK Dons - Including us.

But he's keen to get some proper experience at lower leagues. I know he's not a converted manager, but he's new to the full time manager thing.

He helped keep them up on the last day of the season in 98/99

The on loan Carlisle keeper Jimmy Glass scored in the last minute to keep them up.

That was his last game as manager though. He wasn't there long...
