Apart from a bit of Java coding coursework that you fobbed off to a bunch of random people on an internet forum
General Smuts Posted 11 March 2008 Author Posted 11 March 2008 Apart from a bit of Java coding coursework that you fobbed off to a bunch of random people on an internet forum Thats a good shout, thats the only module ive actually learned owt in as that were summat id never done before. Cheers again for that btw
the_bowman Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 Well I've still got my GCSEs! Didn't mention that I hadn't started A level yet, my bad But yeah, I'm taking Maths Physics Computing CISCO Networking Hoping to do an astrophysics degree at uni, but I am really into computers and stuff so that's why I'm taking that kinda stuff. Is Computing good anyway?
Daggers Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 Hoping to do an astrophysics degree at uni Excellent choice. A proper degree
the_bowman Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 Excellent choice. A proper degree Thanks Not sure what I want to do afterwards though
DB11 Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 Hoping to do an astrophysics degree at uni Good luck!!
stez Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 ThanksNot sure what I want to do afterwards though sell prams, like a mate of mine decided to do after his degree.
the_bowman Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 sell prams, like a mate of mine decided to do after his degree. Well, that's always one option. But we had a talk from a University of Birmingham lecturer, and she said that about 30% of their physics graduates go onto work in finance. Not wanting to sound big headed or anything, I'm on pretty good grades and I've been told I can do 'anything I want', so I think I'll probably consider that when I get my degree.

I went into teaching after jobs in industry, my mate did his doctorate in theoretical physics before working for New Scientist...and now he writes books from his house in France. Finance will always draw quality brains from Physics because they appreciate good minds and pay top money. Just go get drunk for three years first
the_bowman Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 Erm, I might bear that in mind! But yeah, I probably won't decide what I'm going to do until after I get my degree anyway

Tommy G Posted 12 March 2008 Posted 12 March 2008 I love my course. 40 questions, multiple choice, open book, hour to do it in and i can use whatever i want to help me answer them. And your all paying for this Thats the problem. Doing piss poor degrees then can't find a job after Uni? Gets my back up
Bojimha Posted 12 March 2008 Posted 12 March 2008 My advice learn all that shiznit this year because everything you learn at A Level is what i have used at uni and have learnt nothing else in the last 2 years tbh. I got a Computer Science degree and I have to agree with that mate. I did the first two years with very minimal effort, for me I found the 3rd year very intense, the step up was massive so keep your head on and don't get too relaxed because you will need to work hard in the final year if you want a decent degree classification (which you'll need to be able to get a GOOD job). The market is saturated with IT students with degree's who are crap so unless you stand out from the crowd with a first class honours or at the least a 2:1 you won't be on anything more than £20k unless your incredibly lucky. I got lucky and now work for a massive well known IT firm on a fat wage but many of my mates are stuck in the £16k - 18k bracket and have been for 3 years. Sorry for the waffle mate, just thought i'd give you and anyone else in a similar situation a bit of advice
