Simi Posted 19 March 2008 Posted 19 March 2008 Beevers got it didn't he? Yeah, pretty sure he did. No idea how Joey didn't win it to be honest.
Koke Posted 19 March 2008 Posted 19 March 2008 Interesting that Nigel Worthington gave him his chance in the first team, did Kelly ever have him out as a sub? Kells was one cautious ****er and Mattock was 16 years old during the Kells era. Not a chance in hell that he'd get anywhere near the squad.
davieG Posted 30 April 2008 Posted 30 April 2008 Mattock Earns England Call Posted on: Wed 30 Apr 2008 City defender Joe Mattock has been named in the England Under-19 squad for their UEFA Elite Round Tournament in Belarus from Monday, May 19 to Sunday, June 1. Brian Eastick's side have been paired with 2006 finals hosts Poland (May 26), Serbia (May 28) and hosts Belarus (May 31) in Group One. England are one of 28 teams bidding to win one of the seven qualifying berths to joins host nation the Czech Republic in the final tournament in July. The top team in each section, after the three rounds of matches have been completed, will progress to the Elite Round draw, which will be held in Prague on June 1. There the seven qualifiers, plus the Czech Republic, will be divided into two groups of four teams for the final tournament, which will be held from July 14. The top two teams from each final-round section will progress to the semi-finals, which are held on July 23 with the final taking place three days later.
Corky Posted 30 April 2008 Posted 30 April 2008 Well done to young Joe (three weeks younger than me), hopefully he will do his country proud.
Thracian Posted 30 April 2008 Posted 30 April 2008 Being coached by Stuart Pearce can only help Mattock. Should teach him the value of loyalty and passion in football. I don't know that he's short of those things anyway. What he may be missing and where Pearce might help, is having someone to give him direction, to correct him yet to lift him when things go wrong, to put setbacks into proportion, to show some confidence in him when a bit of self-doubt shows in himself. Mattock's come too far too soon in my view, not because he doesn't have the football, the athleticism or the bottle but because, like a prospective London taxi driver, he doesn't have the knowledge. He doesn't seem sure where he stands and its affecting his game. When I said he and Shush! should be devleoped in tandem this season there were reasons. One of them was that Mattock needed to spend time studying his opponents and learning to do so automatically so that it became a natural skill. Get him to note habits, strengths, weaknesses and then go out, last 25/30 minutes and put that knowlege to the test or to write what he'd learned in a diary for future reference if he's not to come on as a sub. Details, all the while attention to detail. Little things that make the difference between winning and losing and build a player's confidence and resources. Putting the finishing touches to young players is not a matter or chance, or whether they have a good game or a bad one. Managers and coaches know Mattock is a good player by now. But there's still the final polish, the little things that he might not think of but which swing the odds his way. Learning is ongoing and at 17 he's got an encyclopaedia of learning ahead of him before he's the finished article.

Sure the fact he's been dropped from our side hasn't helped. Bloody joke.
Cheese Me Posted 30 April 2008 Posted 30 April 2008 That's what I was thinking too. Still great to play for your country at any level but harsh when he's been starting for the U21s. I agree (not) playing behind Clapham can't help
Tubes Posted 30 April 2008 Posted 30 April 2008 I wouldnt call it being dropped, more like the chance to play in an international tournament.
