Asha Posted 27 March 2008 Posted 27 March 2008 Just been looking around youtube as usual, and came accross this, which is former F1 driver Tom Pryce's fatal accident which resulted in him and a marshall being killed. At first you think it's the car that's at the side, but then you see something fly into the air. I thought it was a piece of tyre or something, but actually it's the marshall. See what you think. It's the sort of video that makes you question what you're doing with your life...
Asha Posted 27 March 2008 Author Posted 27 March 2008 Tom Pryce, a promising young Welsh driver, was racing for the Shadow team at the 1977 South African Grand Prix.His team mate in the other Shadow car, Renzo Zorzi, had a mechanical fault and came to a stop off the track by the barriers, about 30 seconds ahead of Pryce. The car's engine suddenly burst into flames, although Zorzi was already in the process of climbing out safely. A marshall carrying a heavy metal fire extinguisher rushed across the track towards the car, with the race still in progress. Pryce, who was driving the next car on the scene, could not avoid the marshall and hit him at full speed, killing him. At the same time, the extinguisher struck Pryce full in the face, and despite his helmet, the force of it broke his neck and killed him instantly. It later turned out that the force of the blow had actually torn his helmet clean off his head, as it was found several hundred yards away from where his car finally came to a stop. With Pryce dead at the wheel, his car continued uncontrolled down the straight part of the track for some distance, until it finally struck another car at the next bend. This double tragedy brought about severe changes in the rules governing marshalling at Grand Prixs.

Yeah apparently with enough force that it flew about 500 yards over the nearest grandstand. Killed both of 'em.

Gené and Tonic Posted 28 March 2008 Posted 28 March 2008 Seen the Tom Pryce one many times. Really appaulling, and the music makes it very emotional. Shockingly, the only way they identified the guy who died was that he didn't register with the other marshalls at the end of the race. They only ever found his clothes, bits of body and some blood.
