The reason why the Politically Correct Corporation continues to inflict Motson on us is because he's very popular within the game. He is completely in awe of football people, almost always steers away from controversy and can be relied upon to do what he's told. Any 'edict' that slithers down from his supreme sliminess, Brian Bargit, you can be sure will be crawling up Motson's nose as it exits the FA chief's fundament...

Like when he praised the 'architectural marvel' that is the New Wembley shortly after it was revealed that the design had been plagiarised and that the FA and the contractors had conned the British public (and The Lottery Fund) over the state-of the-art roof...

Like when he told us that we should no longer refer to the 'New Wembley' as 'New' when barely half a dozen matches had been played there...

Like when he insisted that England fans had shown 'great respect' for the Croatian national anthem unaware that his producer had come in too late to cut off the crowd mike that was relaying a chorus of jeers to the nation...

Motson's love of trivia (in reality, his researchers' notes) masks his very poor understanding of the game. The problem for us of course is that it is his 'Charlie Buchan's Football Annual' anorak geekiness that has propelled him on to his plinth in the pantheon of 'Great British Institutions.'

But the very worst thing about Motson that no one so far has mentioned is that flat, mirthless, nervous titter of his that usually follows one of his 'stunning' revelations:

'Kanu has recovered from his recent bad spell caused by losing his right bollock in training but I'm sure he'd rather I didn't mention that (arrh! arrh! arrh!)) just in case he loses the other one today...'

Pleat always goes on about the other team, for example what Roma needed to have done against Man U to equalise.

Who cares! And he can't prenounce anyone's name.

I love Andy Gray and Martin Tyler on Sky, there sound. Although Tyler always goes on about the past.

'Torquay beat Man United at Old Trafford in 1913. I seem to remember one of their goals coming from a goal kick. Do you remember that one Andy?'

N.B. What i said above isn't 100% accurate. It is an example haha.

Motson just drones on and on, Lawrenson tries to bring some light-hearted banter into the proceedings, like when he called some England fans "geeks"

It's time for Motson to move on, and bring in Alan Green

As if the beeb needs yet ANOTHER fanatically pro-Liverpool commentator...

I would much rather have John Motson commentating than someone like John Barnes. Whenever I begin to watch Channel 5 Italian football, I am enjoying the first 30 seconds and then... Barnes pipes up and I switch off.

Did anyone ever watch John Barnes' football night that used to be on 5? He was truly "King of the Autocue"...

Have hated Lawrenson ever since I watched the rpt. of the Tottenham FA Cup game form 2005 when he desribed De Vries's winner as "blatently offside" as if he really didn't want us to win. Motson does my nut in aswell.

Can't beat Tyler and Gray from SS, enjoy listening to Tildsley on euro nights aswell.

Pleat makes me laugh in a way Motson never could. No matter how many times I hear gems such as "Shebomba", "Malbrank", "Jayneus" and "Berbov", I still find myself in fits. Another classic is "I like this lad, he's got two feet." I don't prefer ITV in general, I just hate Motson.

In fact, I think I hate ITV as well. Who's the guy that sounds like he's quoting Shakespeare or describing the horrors of war? He commentated on the Man United - Roma game the other night. Completely up his own arse.

Peter Drury you're thinking of. He's not brilliant.

Who cares?

We went through anyway, and then straight out. :dunno:

What do you mean who cares??

It's called biased commentary and favouring the bigger sides. Something that Lawrenson is very good at.
