Benji Posted 12 April 2008 Posted 12 April 2008 Welsh anthem urged for cup finalCardiff City fans during the FA Cup semi-final match at Wembley Bluebirds fans celebrating after they beat Barnsley The Welsh sports minister has called for the Welsh national anthem to be played before Cardiff City play in the FA Cup final. Rhodri Glyn Thomas wants "common sense" to prevail and hopes the FA will allow Land of My Fathers to be played alongside God Save The Queen. The Bluebirds meet Premier League side Portsmouth at Wembley on 17 May in their first final for 81 years. The FA said the matter was currently "under consideration". "I hope the FA is going to be sensible about things because there will be great disappointment in Wales if we're not allowed to sing the national anthem," Mr Thomas said. It's not Wales v England, it's two teams in the English FA Cup final Gwyn Davies, Valley Rams supporters' club In 2003, a similar anthem row erupted before a play-off final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff between the Bluebirds and Queens Park Rangers. Eventually neither God Save the Queen or Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau were played and the clubs could choose their own song. Cardiff opted for Men of Harlech, while QPR went for Pigbag's 1981 hit Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag, a fans' favourite. But Gwyn Davies from the Valley Rams supporters club said he did not think Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau should be played. "I don't think we should distract from what's going on - on the pitch," he said. "There's no prouder Welshman than me but this is not the time and the place. "It's not Wales v England, it's two teams in the English FA Cup final". Cardiff meanwhile will be wearing their "lucky" black and yellow kit for the final for their first final since 1927. The team wore their change kit for the quarter final win at Middlesbrough, as well as last weekend's semi-final victory over Barnsley. Portsmouth will be wearing in their traditional blue after a toss of a coin. Both clubs will receive 25,000 tickets and Cardiff City said it would implement a distribution policy which would be as "fair as possible". I understand the whole patriotic argument, but its the fking ENGLISH FA Cup, if they don't like our anthem, play in the Welsh equivalent

Jack Posted 12 April 2008 Posted 12 April 2008 I agree, seeing as they are playing the english leagues and our cup, if they don't like it they know what they can do
Benji Posted 12 April 2008 Author Posted 12 April 2008 Why not play both, doesn't bother me. why not play the anthem of every nationality represented by the players?
Maybes Posted 12 April 2008 Posted 12 April 2008 It shouldn't be played. They chose to play in the ENGLISH leagues, not the WELSH leagues.
Saint Posted 12 April 2008 Posted 12 April 2008 Yeah if they don't like it then they can do one. Tbh i'm not that botherd but i don't like the fact that yes they are in the english leagues, but they dont like the way we do things. It's like this Cardiff, "Aslong as you live under an English roof, you'll live under English rules"
Jordan Posted 12 April 2008 Posted 12 April 2008 As "God Save the Queen" is the national anthem of the United Kingdom, and as the United Kingdom includes Wales, there is no problem with only playing that song before kick-off. There isn't even an official English national anthem. However, by the whole "you're in our house, you play by our rules" argument doesn't hold water ... I don't seem to recall the Welsh doing this when they were kind enough to host FA Cup Finals and semi-finals, League Cup finals, playoff finals, etc. As an aside, national anthems are played or performed at every professional sporting event in North America, not just the "big games." Over here, we'd never have this debate because 1) playing the national anthem before every game waters down the importance of this "ceremony" and 2) whenever American teams play Canadian teams, both nations' respective national anthems are played always.

Nationwider Posted 12 April 2008 Posted 12 April 2008 A fantastic bit of politician gets cheap publicity by creating an issue out of nothing, entirely for his own ends. Well done, Rhodri, you opportunistic devil, you.
Head Honcho Posted 12 April 2008 Posted 12 April 2008 Fvcking stupid idea. Most of Cardiff don't even know the anthem ffs I could understand if it was Aberystwyth in the final.
purpleronnie Posted 12 April 2008 Posted 12 April 2008 why not play the anthem of every nationality represented by the players? Its nothing to do with the players its the team.
sdb Posted 12 April 2008 Posted 12 April 2008 who cares? if they want it they should get it - worked hard enough to make the final. our national anthem is shite anyway, and we still have to hear it even though it's about the monarchy and jack shit else.

davieG Posted 13 April 2008 Posted 13 April 2008 They should ban National Anthems from all sporting events.
Sparky Posted 13 April 2008 Posted 13 April 2008 Nope , nothing like being at wembley with City belting out the national anthem
