Nod.E Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 I'm pleased that a lot of people have chosen Mattock in here over Clapham. Clapham bottles any challenge with a challenger! He's in it for the money, and doesn't give two sh*ts about our football club. Mattock however is a passionate fan, and it's this passion that we need in a time like this.

Milans Foxes Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 I remember Mattock having an awesome game at Oakwell last season. Think it was only his second game or something like that. Would probably play him in midfield though because the left is the side that we are not using well, with strikers normally filling the gap there. Drop Howard to the bench to give him a kick up the backside. Olly has been too loyal to him so far. Stick Mcauley up there and Hume can feed off of his headers up front, somewhere Olly has seemingly refused to start him as yet. Would maybe bring in a couple of youngsters into the squad. Worthington did it last year and it seemed to do the trick! I would do a thracian and bring Beswick in at left-back. (I think he can play there) People have underestimated Sheehans crossing and dead-ball ability and if Beswick can replicate this, its worth having him in the side and I agree that Clapham is very average. Would also play King in midfield. The main problem we have got is scoring goals and apart from the Bristol City game, its because we have not created enough-something King can offer. Alnwick Stearman Kisnorbo Worley Beswick Bell King Hendrie Mattock Hume Mcauley Subs: Fryatt Howard Oakley Etuhu Clapham Would drop DJ altogether because he clearly does not give a shit, can't even be bothered to stay onside until after the ball is played and not going to Sheff Utd when injured to support the lads. What are your thoughts?????
FleckneyFox Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 Henderson Stearman McAuley Kisnorbo Clapham Bell Oakley Hendrie Mattock Hayles Hume Alnwick, N'Gotty, Wesolowski, Laczko, Campbell
Father Ted Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 Sorry but I still think it vital he picks Ryan Beswick in the side.Since Shush! left we've hardly had a free kick worth the name. It may yet cost us our status and Saturday's efforts against Colchester were beyond pathetic. Beswick is a competent player anyway and a dangerous one but most of all he can deliver precise passes into the box from dead ball situations or open play. We're not a side that scores lots of goals anyway and I'd doubt we'll be up for anything but a smash and grab at Oakwell. And the best way of grabbing is from a free kick/corner. Oakley's the one I'd leave out. He's not quite gone awol lately but his impact has been limited so Weso and Hendrie would be my men for central midfield. Hume is a sure choice up front but who to play with him is a problem. Fryatt's his natural partner, Campbell gives pace, Howard has a formidable scoring record and Hayles is always dangerous. In a flexible 4-4-2/4-3-3 I'd go... Henderson; Stearman, N'Gotty, Kisnorbo, Mattock; Bell, Wesolowski, Hendrie, Hume, Howard, Beswick Subs: Chambers, McAuley, King, Campbell, Hayles. I'd have King as the substitute because he is far more flexible than Oakley. He can play in front of the backline though it wastes his ability, he operates competently in central midfield but most of all he can play in the hole behind the attackers and add to our goals potential. Would that he was fully match fit and I could start him because we really need his late runs into the box. McAuley might well be utilised in attack again and, with King too, we would have five potential attackers who are strong in the air should we need a late kamikaze effort. But none of that would have a chance of working without the one bloke, with Hendrie, who delivers decent balls into the box, and that is Beswick, a player who is well capable of assisting Mattock in defence too if need be, and his regular partner for ages. I like Campbell but feel his pace might be most destructive second half. My side is chosen to be mobile, competitive yet to give us enough potential scorers and the best players to present the chances. I really used to like reading your posts but now I've just had enough. To drop Oakley for King... get real. And to bring Beswick in at this stage of the season would be suicide. Although i do always agree with you on that Fryatt is poor, Gradel should be recalled and in your post I definitely agree with the Mcauley bit.
20mj08 Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 to be honest lads i wouldnt be suprised if ollie goes with bruno infront of the defence with him dorpping in the back 4 when kisnorbo is man marking odejayi put howard on bench with hume n fryatt or dj for a start

And to bring Beswick in at this stage of the season would be suicide. Although i do always agree with you on that Fryatt is poor, Gradel should be recalled and in your post I definitely agree with the Mcauley bit. The problem with Oakley is that he's making very little happen and still hasn't scored a single goal in 17 matches. King is a regular scorer if he's ever given licence to get forward. As for Beswick we need width and supply from the left but more important we need fast, spinning, well directed free-kicks that might just plunder us a goal. Who else is going to provide them? And how could playing him be suicide? Oakley's had 17 games to impress and during that time we've slipped from around 17th into the relegation zone. We're therefore dead in the water anyway and if you trust the same personnel to revive us - in other words you believe there's no real reason we're down there - you've got more faith than I have. I don't argue that King or Beswick are necessarily better players than various alternatives. Just that we need what they can offer and there's no-one else with those qualities. We no longer have a Gudjonsson or a Muzzy who can get goals from central midfield (a big weakness I mentioned in the summer), nor do we have any sort of genuinely dangerous left-winger. People mention Laczko but when he and Beswick played in the same side it was Beswick who scored and made goals, not Laczko - and that was from left back! Suicide? It will be suicide if we don't score goals in our last three matches. That you can guarantee.

And when I say throwing Beswick in would be suicide - I mean, a young player, under such massive pressure to keep teh club up could prove too much for him OR it could just make him do amazing things but I think the first is more likely. How about Hume as a sort of attacking midfielder to create the chances.
TrickyTrev Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 McAuley is sh it and should be banished to league two.Putting him up front? We might as well stick a flagpole up there and winch a white flag up there. Dido could do the half time entertainment. Music to slit yer bloody wrists to. People seem to be forgetting that he can't play a five yard pass when there is no one remotely near him. Quite what he'd do when he is required to try and do something inventive or difficult with the ball at his feat I don't know. Definately only a last 5 minute option. My team, relies on us actually passing the ball from time to time so it aint gonna happen but hey ho. ........................Alnwick Stearman..Kisnorbo..Bruno...Mattock Bell...Wesolowski...Oakley..Hendrie ......................Hume. ........................DJ. Joe. Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 Alnwick Stearman Kisnorbo N'Gotty Mattock Bell Wesolowski Hendrie Etuhu Hume Howard Henderson, Clapham, Oakley, Barry and DJ all out for me. I feel more reassured with Alnwick in goal, I just think he's the safer option. I also prefer Mattock's ability to cross a ball compared to Clapham's. We lacked good quality crossing against Colchester. I don't think Oakley is warranting a place at the moment either, so I'd go for Weso instead of him. I also think in Etuhu we have that pacey, instinctive winger on the left wing. And the main one- Hume up front. It just has to happen on Saturday and it could prove vital to whether we stay up or go down.

How about Hume as a sort of attacking midfielder to create the chances. Over recent years we've had all sorts of midfielders who can do scrappy things, who can chase and harrass. What we've not had is midfielders who can create and shoot and ghost into the box and do all the things which were once standard but which we now seem to have sacrificed for Oakleys, Hughes's, Jarretts, Tiattos and even Wesos to some extent. At least one central midfielder and preferably both have to be capable of making things happen on occasions. Joey scored 10 times in 77 games, nothing marvellous, but how we could do with five goals a season from our central midfielders who've actually managed five between all four of them, including cup goals. As for pressure on youngsters, while everyone has made their mistakes, I don't think any one of our youngsters has shown themselves vulnerable in that way over the last two or three seasons - in fact it's one or two of the seniors who have worried me more. As for Hume he's a trier anywhere but he's needed as an up-front striker seeing as he's scored twice as many goals as anyone else. Again. But what we do need is potential goals from other places apart from striker.
Geo V Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 Wow, I havent been online for a while really but its great to see you guys and gals can still be bothered to select a starting eleven as I cant think of many who deserve to start. The lads have embarrased us and themselves this season and I am just hopeful that our luck doesnt finally run out and we get well, the "R" word!! BTW, Sling McAuley, Kisnorbo and Howard up front and lets play some hoooooooooooooofball, ala Walshy /Matty Elliot in the good old days!!!!
Sods Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 Ive given up on caring on whos in our team. I just want the players to make me proud and work their arses off.

Koke Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 What the hell happened to Etuhu? We could certainly use two proper wingers now (Bell and Etuhu) with Hendrie and Oakley in the middle + Hume and Howard up front.

The only real creative midfielder we have had in recent years was Gareth Williams and I have to admit we made one big mistake selling him! Ok, he's often injured but when he's playing he can be very good.

Mind you, could say the same about Chambers.

People would spout the same stuff about him lazy but I thought he put as much effort in as anyone else and showd more quality than anyone else. I genuinely wish he were still here.
