On paper, pretty solid. We've been given a slight reprieve tonight and we can't afford anything less than a draw. If Sheffield Wednesday happen to lose it's, unbelievably, "back in our hands". After Saturday's fiasco, I'll take that.

I'm measuring us against Sheff Wed. After all, we can't affect Cov's run-in, but that too may come good for us.

This Saturday will tell us a lot. Let's hope it's all good.

Sorry but I still think it vital he picks Ryan Beswick in the side.

Since Shush! left we've hardly had a free kick worth the name. It may yet cost us our status and Saturday's efforts against Colchester were beyond pathetic.

Beswick is a competent player anyway and a dangerous one but most of all he can deliver precise passes into the box from dead ball situations or open play.

We're not a side that scores lots of goals anyway and I'd doubt we'll be up for anything but a smash and grab at Oakwell.

And the best way of grabbing is from a free kick/corner.

Oakley's the one I'd leave out. He's not quite gone awol lately but his impact has been limited so Weso and Hendrie would be my men for central midfield.

Hume is a sure choice up front but who to play with him is a problem. Fryatt's his natural partner, Campbell gives pace, Howard has a formidable scoring record and Hayles is always dangerous.

In a flexible 4-4-2/4-3-3 I'd go...

Henderson;

Stearman, N'Gotty, Kisnorbo, Mattock;

Bell, Wesolowski, Hendrie,

Hume, Howard, Beswick

Subs: Chambers, McAuley, King, Campbell, Hayles.

I'd have King as the substitute because he is far more flexible than Oakley. He can play in front of the backline though it wastes his ability, he operates competently in central midfield but most of all he can play in the hole behind the attackers and add to our goals potential. Would that he was fully match fit and I could start him because we really need his late runs into the box.

McAuley might well be utilised in attack again and, with King too, we would have five potential attackers who are strong in the air should we need a late kamikaze effort.

But none of that would have a chance of working without the one bloke, with Hendrie, who delivers decent balls into the box, and that is Beswick, a player who is well capable of assisting Mattock in defence too if need be, and his regular partner for ages.

I like Campbell but feel his pace might be most destructive second half.

My side is chosen to be mobile, competitive yet to give us enough potential scorers and the best players to present the chances.

It's like reading a job application every week.

Reading job applications is not my way of passing the time, but I believe you.

However, seeing no-one else seems to want Beswick in the side it seemed right to explain my reasoning.

Cos the sort of players that most have been picking - while probably being the obvious choice on paper - have so far failed to quite deliver, often by a narrow margin, but it's there nonetheless.

I've tried to include someone who might tip the balance but no, I didn't expect a volley of support.

Looking through our team, I want to see form players and I see very few. I see plenty that have been shit for weeks though.

Alnwick

Stearman

Kisnorbo

Worley

Mattock

Bell

Wesolowski

Hendrie

Beswick

Hume

McAuley

Subs: Howard, Laczko, Hayles, King, Bori

Odd team, but we need players with a point to prove or who are in form. Really struggling for strikers in any sort of form, Hume needs a run-out up front he's got the needle with Holloway you can tell and he desperately wants to prove him wrong. McAuley would be a giggle up front, would give their centre halves something to ponder.

I also think it's time to see whether the Hungarians have got any interest in making a name for themselves here.

I would be horrified if we played like this , the key to this formation is to be able to pass a ball . All we do is hoof and Hume would be isolated and the 5 man midfield bypassed . The style of football we play means relying on Howard to win his fair share of headers or us winning the 2nd ball

Not sure he's got the engine for 90 minutes up front but I quite like the McAuley idea.

Interesting too what you say about the Hungarians.

With the time they've had out of the side they should be fully acclimatised now and raring to go.

Quite why Bori disappeared off the radar so quickly in the first place I don't know.

I never quite understand why Holloway shows so little faith in people. Whether others agree with him or not about selections doesn't matter. He presumably picks people like Laczko and Etuhu because he thinks they've got something. Then promptly leaves em out again.

If he didn't pick them at first because they weren't fully prepared I could understand it but selecting them briefly and then dumping them doesn't make sense.

It is things like that even more than his results that worry me most about Holloway - as if his results are worrying enough! :D

McAuley is sh it and should be banished to league two.

Putting him up front? We might as well stick a flagpole up there and winch a white flag up there.

Dido could do the half time entertainment.

Music to slit yer bloody wrists to.

Any other ideas for winning headers in the box?

Cos all the crosses you can muster are no good without someone gets on the end of them.

I stuck with Howard to go with Hume but it was with reservations and I don't know that the lesser-known McAuley (as an attacker) wouldn't be harder for Barnsley to cope with at least for one half.

As for the white flag our "goals for" column in the Championship this season (40 in 43) shows how effective all the others strikers have been and a big reason why, of course, we're where we are in the table.

Everything is a gamble now but there's some who think we need to try something different.

City have already played much music to slit your wrists by, it's hard to imagine a change of record would be any worse.
