Monk Posted 21 May 2008 Posted 21 May 2008 I think if we get a few more names off the books and operate with a smaller and younger squad we should still be able to pull together a promotion 11. Ideally I'd ship out all of our strikers except for Hume and erm, Hume, and spend the money on one good striker and a reserve striker on a lower wage than the current bunch.
dandannieldanok Posted 21 May 2008 Posted 21 May 2008 MM promised 4.5m of 'funds' available for the second year in his tender document to the board before his purchase. You have to remember that of the "£11m" spent this season, barely half went on actual transfer fees, so if £4.5m has been promised it looks unlikely we'll be spending more than £1m, especially considering the inevitable relegation cutbacks.
smokey Posted 21 May 2008 Posted 21 May 2008 AGREE!Is it true we have about 40 players in the first team squad??? Thats a fcuking joke!!!We'd be lucky if 5-6 are good enough to play regular. Problem is,whos gonna buy these wankers? We Did have, Thats what Ollie as done good, he as got rid of a lot of, if not all of the shite, just Porter and a couple of others to go! I think we have a good size squad now with a good bunch of experience and youth. I agree the experince lads let us down last year but come on, with the squad we have now, yes 2 or 3 in, 2 or 3 out we should piss league one next year if we can get some belief in the camp this pre-season!
Daggers Posted 21 May 2008 Posted 21 May 2008 I voted for seventy billion trillion pounds. I now fully realise that this estimate was idiotic. I now think we will spend £2.73
Fatbloke Posted 21 May 2008 Posted 21 May 2008 £0 net.MM is hardly going to throw more money at this car crash, is he? Time for a massive reality check. Well he`s the one who`s crashed the bluddy car, and wrecked it, so why should`nt he foot the bill for repairs, then get in it and drive off into the sunset !!!
Legend_in_blue Posted 21 May 2008 Posted 21 May 2008 I now fully realise that this estimate was idiotic.I now think we will spend £2.73 Mandaric will probably use his "encouraging" season ticket sales to such effect. £2.73 sounds about right. It ought to be. The "if we spend money on season ticket purchases, then we'll be providing much needed transfer funds" argument to me is non-existant. Nonsense. As for spending £2.5 million +, just where are you going to spend that kind of money on (a) players at this level and/or (b) the quality of players required which would warrant such a fee playing at this level? Won't happen. Spending £2.5 million + on players at this level will give us a squad of roughly 60 players! Bring in Barry Fry, he likes big squads.
Nationwider Posted 21 May 2008 Posted 21 May 2008 Well he`s the one who`s crashed the bluddy car, and wrecked it, so why should`nt he foot the bill for repairs, then get in it and drive off into the sunset !!! MM has already proved the theory that throwing money at a problem doesn't necessarily make it go away. I think people have already made the salient points as to why he won't spend: 1. The types of player we'll now be attracting won't merit big fees because they'll be L1 standard. 2. We still have 30-ish pros on the books - enough to work with in L1. 3. If we do spend, it'll be with the remnants of what we get for those leaving for bigger and better things. 4. The current manager doesn't deserve any more funds, and sacking him will only burn a bigger hole in MM's pocket. ...and when you own a company outright, you can inject whatever capital you like into it. Or nothing, if you so choose. MM can do as he pleases. If he wants to spend 10 years in L1, he can do.
eye666 Posted 21 May 2008 Posted 21 May 2008 I think it'll all depend on who goes. If Stearman, Mattock and Macauley go (all possibilities) then we will have to invest in replacements. I think if we ship out the crap that we don't want or need and then get in 4 or 5 players we should be fine. Maximum of about £2m I would have thought. If we can sell Fryatt for a few hundred k, get near a million for Howard (wishful thinking) and the same for DJ then we could bring in a goalkeeper (to challenge Henderson), a centre back (to replace N'Gotty), a left winger (to challenge Levi), a centre midfielder (hopefully Clemence will go as El Capitan is surely on a huge contract which he does not deserve after the shambles that was last season, and maybe Oakley as he too is on a huge wage) and a striker to replace the wasters up front. Hope we can keep Hume as I rate him and think he would have got more goals if Holloway had stuck him up front all the time. Besides that, bring through the younger players like Gradel to challenge Bell (assuming we get him?), King (thought he played well when he was given a chance - Preston away comes to mind. Shame we never played him, and would rather have played him over the 2 defenders Megson played in midfield), give Weso more of a chance if he can stay clear of injuries and Ashley Chambers. I think the most important thing is to try to keep the defence together, play Gradel who ripped League 1 apart with Bournemouth and keep Hume. To summarise, I agree with a lot of what's already said. Bring through some of the youngsters, but i feel what we need to do is to buy some of the best players in this league (sounds simple enough I know), but if we can get those 4 or 5 players whilst getting rid of the crap, I think we've got every chance of promotion next season, and cementing a solid position in the Championship the year after. I've already put my list of who I think we should get on the Transfer forum. Now we just need to see what happens...
FilboFox Posted 21 May 2008 Posted 21 May 2008 Sod the AMOUNT, I'm more concerned with the quality of the players... I want to see good players coming to the club and then us building on that whatever the price.
Linekaaaah Posted 22 May 2008 Posted 22 May 2008 Trouble is we already HAVE quality players that can get us out of this division. The problem isn't buying in more, it's keeping hold of the likes of Hume, McAuley, Mattock, Stearman and others who occasionally put a decent performance in last season, along with actually PLAYING our youngsters instead of relying on or EVEN (perish the thought) buying in more doddering old farts looking for a quick cash-in at the end of a mediocre career. Incidentally, that last comment is something I wouldn't put past Ollie... Anyway, I put £500k-£1m... give it to the decent players as a kind of 'loyalty' bonus... I know, i'm a f**king optimist...
dog_4 Posted 22 May 2008 Posted 22 May 2008 give me the job and i'd sign sam vokes from bourneworth, the young keeper from luton and keith andrews from mk dons. so about 3m please
The Doctor Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Are you assuming we're going to be keeping the likes of Mattock, Stearman, Weso, Hume, Gradel, etc?I think the only way we're going to keep these players is if Milan puts an unreasonable value on them, which, tbh, I wouldn't put past him. thank god for that then spend bout £5 mill on 5-6 quality players. youth preferred tho
andyh1884 Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 give me the job and i'd sign sam vokes from bourneworth, the young keeper from luton and keith andrews from mk dons. so about 3m please Is that the same Sam Vokes who signed for Wolves last week? Vokes to Wolves
Benjani Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 What about that young lad who scored for Southampton against The Baggies. I liked the look of him, possible loan signing?
