Sony Vaio has ruined my life!

Recommended Posts

Posted

So last year i decided to buy a Sony Vaio, everything was fine up until last week, i go to switch it on and it does not power up!!

Uh Oh...

I canceled the Insurance like a silly plonker i am and i brought it May 7th 2007 so the 1 year warranty is up... only just!!

I sent it away to be repaired and it came back as beyond repair!!

To say i am pissed off is a understatement, this really should not be doing this after a year, i have always looked after my laptop's....

Ok i hold my hands up and say yes i am a idiot for not keeping the insurance......

I am trying to speak with somebody at Sony about this and they really dont want to know.... £650 down the pan!!!

I've broke the hard-drive on my laptop 3 times in just over a year. Fair enough, two of them were my fault. Taking out the battery whilst it's still on, and getting frustrated and smacking it isn't the best way to treat your laptop, but I still maintain the third time wasn't me.

Stick it on your household insurance (all risks cover)

In about 2 months, call them up and say, shit, it was on the shelf and fell off when the wire got caught and now it won't power up at all?

Should only be about a £50 excess and maybe £50 max to stick it on the policy till expiry.

Tripping while carrying it downstairs works better.

As long as you throw it with enough force.

i would seriously think against smashing it and calling on the insurance as it has been RMA'd so the makers will have a record of it being returned as non-repairable, what has actually happened with it ? did they give any idea what the cause of the fault is ? as i tend to specialise in computers / laptops

first thing to check is the power supply unit plug it in and get a multimeter on the small plug on the end see if its giving out correct voltages, it may be something simple that sony cant be arsed to repair, you know they class knackered power point connectors on laptops as unrepairable due to the amount of work required to actually get to most of the power connections

They say it could have been a power surge....

The mother board is knackered

Yeah thats a good plan... I will look into that one fella's!!

I'm pretty sure insurance fraud is a potential solution to almost all of life's problems.

You watch, this time next week (having read this thread) Holloway and most of the first team squad will be found broken at the foot of some stairs in LE2.

"Ooopsie!" Mandaric will say. "I was just on my way to Paul's office to play with our team when I tripped over Elvis Hammond's ankle and dropped them down the stairs. I must go now, I have to chat with a man from Norwich Union."

So, surely if you realise it's your own fault, surely this title should read - "My own stupidity has ruined my life" :dunno::P

Yes your right i should rename it, but having been on the phone to sony and for them to tell me it will cost £ 600 to repair, i am not in the mood for jokes, where on earth is the logic in that, i pay £650 for the laptop and they want to charge me £600 for a repair....

Beyond a joke....

Simply because you're not insured on it anymore.

You have 2 options, pay out for it to get repaired and save the hassle of file transfers etc... or buy a new laptop...

Edit* They don't care about you, as long as you're giving them money. It sucks that they can't give you a bit of common courtesy, but sadly, that's life today.

power surge should have been stopped by the actual power supply and not gotten any further, as all the psu does is convert 240v A/C to whatever voltage DC there should be no way the spike should have gone further, know anybody else with a suitable laptop that you could test their psu on it ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformer as i understand there is no actual physical link between the actual full a/c 240v's and the output 12v's so power surge should not have caused this

also yes the repairs can be expensive... they will just replace the whole motherboard rather than fix something simple like a knackered psu jack lol thats how come they get to charge £600 for it, its easier and more simple and more cost effective i.e they make more money from it, at end of day its a case of people will pay those costs, either that or have a knackered laptop ;)

I think i will have to test it....

But i think bert is right, i will have to just learn my lesson and i will just buy a new one i suppose!!!

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!

there are couple of options...

1. test the power supply make sure its working and capable of charging the battery... output voltages will be on a label on the psu make sure they are correct...

2. get it repaired ....

3. insurance ...

4. IT at GOOD local university ? they should have an it department preferably computer engineering or an enthusiasts club you could ask around at, ask them about getting a replacement motherboard i.e via ebay as this is what i do myself is replace the board if tinkering cant fix it

5. ask your friends if they know anybody with a technical pc head on their shoulders, they might know

laptops have a certain build structure and lots of screws... its hard till you know how to disassemble but i have my tricks and ways ;)

if your apt with a set of screwdrivers and have some patience then have a crack yourself :) but remember they are full of small breakable things take ESD precautions and be careful of small wires and flat plastic cables

-=NOTE=-

if you do send it back for insurance... take the hard drive out of it... they are usually under a small panel on the underneath of the thing, atleast that way you will still HAVE the information that was stored on the thing and can get somebody to salvage the stuff off of it

I really appreciate everything you have said here! Thanks

I am better on programes and desktop related things rather than the technical side, i would never risk opening the computer up, i would love to learn it though!!

I think i will just buy a new laptop in all honesty, i cant be assed to mess around much longer, maybe some parts of this broken laptop maybe sellable!!

Still very annoyed with Sony though!!!!

I May burn my PS3 in protest!! :crylaugh:

We have quite a few Vaio's within our company, and they do start to pck up about a year or so and most people don't extend the warranty!! It's a fact of life, you have a very expensive door stop!!!

Really think they'll do that for a few hundred pound claim?

I admit, it could happen, though.

I must admit to being surprised to hear that, I'd have assumed your Vaio would have been reliable simply because of it's premium pricing.

Is it down to the board over-heating then, they are slim buggers in the main with a fair bit packed in, or is it just that they get abused?

They get abused, i rape it big time!!!

Can i get jailed for that??

Probably not but you can get an electric shock in the unholiest of places! :giggle:
