Mattock Instrumental In England Wins

Posted on: Thu 29 May 2008

Joe Mattock will be hoping to help England qualify for the Under-19 European Championships this weekend.

The City defender played a full 90 minutes in the 2-0 victory over Poland on Monday before starting again against Serbia two days later, which resulted in a 1-0 win for Brian Eastick's youngsters.

The 19s now only need to avoid defeat against hosts Belarus in Minsk on Saturday afternoon to ensure that they clinch one of the eight places available at Czech Republic 2008 which begins in July.

UEFA European U19 Championship Elite Round Qualifying

England 2 2 0 0 6

Serbia 2 1 0 1 3

Belarus 2 1 0 2 3

Poland 2 0 0 2 0

I'm pleased for the lad, it'll be giving him no end of confidence.

I just hope he doesn't leave for a bigger club before he's ready which could be very detrimental to him. There wouldn't be a lot of point him joining a Premier League club and sitting in the reserves.

I hope he stays but if he doesn't, good luck to him anyway.

Think if he stays he will be first choice left back all season and would do him and us the world of good!

He'd be far better off in terms of his career if he moved to a decent Championship team than if he stayed with us in League One.

Dont agree, was ok in parts last year but still not ready for a full season at that level, maybe the season after he will be a great championship player!

None of them could afford the price that Mandaric would ask for him.

The only way he'll move is to a a Premier League club, who would probably let him rot in the reserves for the next couple of seasons.

Utter crap, don't underestimate the influence of regular game time week in week out against hard footballing teams honing basic game awareness aswell as mental fortitude at such a young age rather than sitting on the bench of some promotion chasing team for half the season and rushing into making an impact on the rare chances he does and appearing hopelessly out of his depth.

I said a "decent Championship team". He would not look out of his depth and he is good enough to start in such a team.

Playing against and with players that aren't as good as him won't help at all. He needs to be challenged and pushed. The Championship will do that, League One won't.

obviously if he goes to a prem club then he will probably be loaned out again maybe back to us, you never know but its not like hes a forward or midfielder that can come on for a prem club every once in a while and try to impress, hes a defender so he will need stability and ultimately a role model to learn from and i dont see anybody here that can do that!

It's not about the level of play that will make him look out of depth it's the limited chances which will encourage him to play too hard and snatch at them when they come along and therefore doesn't do himself justice. Granted he needs to be challenged and pushed he's obviously go the talent but mental toughness is the most important development at this stage to nurture that, not being pressured to perform at such an early stage - don't forget he's only 2 seasons (potentially) from the prem with us, optimistic I know but these years will serve him in better stead rather than taking perceived short cuts.

How much if a shortcut is going to a mid-upper table Championship team though? If we had stayed up that's possibly where he would have been playing next season anyway and how many of us would be requesting that he go out on loan to a League One team? Max Gradel part 2, right? The lad is good enough to earn a starting place at England Under-21 level so he's certainly good enough to start for a Championship team.

It may not be a career ruining decision to stay at Leicester but I don't think it will help him at all. He's one of few players who deserves better.

Completely fair call, we'll agree to disagree. I think I'm slightly old school in my train of though that mental toughness should be honed an earned, I don't think he's earned any sort of elevation just yet and that he'll be in better for the experience in the long term. Whatever, good luck to the lad, here's hoping he does us proud whatever shirt he pulls on in the future.

Personally I don't think Mattock's ready for Championship level yet, so I think it would probably be more beneficial to him to stick with us for another season at least and see how he fares at left back for a full season.

Remember he's still very young, not played many games for us yet, and we've seen so many other players snapped up by bigger clubs only to rot in reserve teams. We don't want this to happen to Mattock- he's definitely got good potential, I just don't think he's ready for first team football at a higher level yet.

Are the U21s not in any competitions this summer?

No, the next European finals are in 2009.

Expect to see Mattock feature heavily in those.

Anyone know how England did today and if Mattock played?

It was 0-0, don't know if Mattock played.

Since the finals are in July, does this mean he'll miss pre-season?

By then it probably won't be our problem.
