Daggers Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 Interesting when this news come out,How much has it affected Smokers and Non Smokers? A survey suggests more than 400,000 people quit smoking as a result of the smoking ban.
Master Fox Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 Still think it's a sh*t idea. I happened to give up a couple of months before it was put in place, but it still fcuking drives me mad. Going out isn't the same. The pubs don't bother me, it's when you're in a club that i think the rules need to change
hairy Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 I smoke and I prefer it now when I go out. Its added another social element to going down the local with those having to stand outside too. Its better when your eating out too.
Vardinhio Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 Without provoking the whole smoking debate.... Overall it is better, it's better for everyones health and especially benefits people who don't want to breath in other peoples smoke. A great success to be honest.

A great success to be honest. As a smoker half of me says its a good idea half says, its the goverment banning anything it does not like Why not ban alcohol and cars??they kill Go to the LRI on a Fri/Sat night it will be full of drink related folks Give people the right to choose whether they go to a smoking or non smoking pub ps I agree about no smoking in restaurant/pubs that do food
Daggers Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 Give people the right to choose whether they go to a smoking or non smoking pub There was a time when I'd lay out all the points against that statement...but seeing as it's never going to happen anymore I'll just
poynton blue Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 There was a time when I'd lay out all the points against that statement...but seeing as it's never going to happen anymore I'll just Keep celebrating as 4 pubs a day close down and hundreds/thousands of people lose their jobs/houses
Daggers Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 Keep celebrating as 4 pubs a day close down and hundreds/thousands of people lose their jobs/houses That logic then argues for all booze bought from off-licenses and shops to be heavily taxed in order to level the playing field. This is the primary cause of pubs shutting down. The industry suffered from a surfeit of PH's that had nothing to them, they didn't value "beer" as the primary commodity in their marketing mix and they now suffer first from a downturn in sales. Unikit places covered in plastic or offering a little shamrock in the head of your beer - so the **** what? The same pub as you could find all over the country pouring out fizzy pop to undiscerning punters, coughing up phlegm and sparking up another cloud. If there's no point to a pub beyond being a place to smoke in then there was no point to it continuing so, ok, thanks for the invite...
hairy Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 Keep celebrating as 4 pubs a day close down and hundreds/thousands of people lose their jobs/houses I agree with Daggers. Its the brewery thats at fault for that. High priced beer and shit pubs.

Your right cheap booze from supermarkets, the increase in the price of beer/spirits and the smoking ban is the reason for the death of the British pub. What I dont like (and many non smokers) is being told what we should do by a goverment, which im sure you agree has more serious issues at the moment. Its like the fox hunting ban,I sit on the fence, but why should some-one from Islington decide the future of thousands of country-side jobs, and when hundreds of thousands of them demonstrate do they listen........do they f*uck
poynton blue Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 I agree with Daggers. Its the brewery thats at fault for that. High priced beer and shit pubs. Its not the brewerys ,its the goverment mugging us on tax on beer/spirits
coale39 Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 Its not the brewerys ,its the goverment mugging us on tax on beer/spirits Well, if the goverment didnt tax beer and spirits there would be loads more pissed up people due to the price being so low.
hairy Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 Its not the brewerys ,its the goverment mugging us on tax on beer/spirits The tax is the same if its a supermarket or a pub, surely.
Webbo Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 I agree with Daggers. Its the brewery thats at fault for that. High priced beer and shit pubs. I don't think the pubs are owned by the big breweries any more.
Vardinhio Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 Nope, very different taxes. The markup also has to be far more in a pub for obvious reasons
Daggers Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 I don't think the pubs are owned by the big breweries any more. Around us there used to be seven pubs serving a few estates - but there was nothing to tell between them because they all sold fizzy lager and shite beer, they all started doing crap curry and rubbish steak for a fiver to get the punters in. Amazingly, now there are only three in business and one of them is a Chinese restaurant. They were shit pubs and now they're shut forever. Breweries like Marstons, people who make real beer, are still looking to expand their portfolio of premises. A place where you can go and sit in decent surroundings and maybe have something good to eat - they'll continue to survive and thrive. In my world, all pubs without a thatched roof or a scrape on wall from the sword of Oliver Cromwell...or a well-stocked supply of Belgian booze....would be closed forthwith.
poynton blue Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 As you can gather, this smoking ban issue winds me up,just another example of our spineless goverment picking on the easy targets Well Brown how about a ****ing knife ban you clueless one eyed jock twat,be tougher
Daggers Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 As you can gather, this smoking ban issue winds me up,just another example of our spineless goverment picking on the easy targets Well Brown how about a ****ing knife ban you clueless one eyed jock twat,be tougher Because a ban on smoking in pubs is enforceable. A ban of knives isn't.
Webbo Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 In my world, all pubs without a thatched roof or a scrape on wall from the sword of Oliver Cromwell...or a well-stocked supply of Belgian booze....would be closed forthwith. You should go in the British Legion with me. Some of the members there actually served with Oliver Cromwell.
Master Fox Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 Because a ban on smoking in pubs is enforceable.A ban of knives isn't. I swear you said once that you used to smoke? The way some people go on about smokers sometimes, is as if by sparking up a fag they've some how tried to inflict death upon them or tried to molest their children or something.
AmericanScott Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 I think the pubs should have a choice as to being smoke free or a smokers pub. If they choose to be smoke free, then the government should lower the pub's taxes significantly as a reward. If they choose to be a smokers pub, then keep the taxes the same or slap them up a tad for doing so. Do you gets me?
Daggers Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 You should go in the British Legion with me. Some of the members there actually served with Oliver Cromwell. The one I worked in used to have an old boy with one of those buzzy things and a big hole in his throat. Nice. I swear you said once that you used to smoke? The way some people go on about smokers sometimes, is as if by sparking up a fag they've some how tried to inflict death upon them or tried to molest their children or something. Smokers give people aids of the eyes - it's been proven by scientists, boffins and top docs.
poynton blue Posted 1 July 2008 Posted 1 July 2008 Because a ban on smoking in pubs is enforceable.A ban of knives isn't. So a five year prison sentance for carrying a knife is not enforceable????? I think whats been happening recently most people would back that idea,i think something like that must happen soon!!!! There is no other alternative
