MONreborn Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 Leicester did something which sent shockwaves through the rest of europe.... On this day 18 July Ade Bad Buyi.. Leicester sign big today in 2000... Poor Ade Akinbiyi, he didn't half have a tough time of it at one point. Once labelled as "The Premier League's Worst Striker" by those kind souls at The Sun, it's fair to say Adeola Peter Oluwatoyin Akinbiyi would come to regret the move he made today in 2000, when he signed for Peter Taylor's Leicester City. Signed for £5.5m to replace the departin Emile Heskey, Akinbiyi had spent only one season at Wolves, scoring a whopping 16 goals. Clearly those kind of stats were to the new Foxes boss' liking, though the fact he shelled out £1.5m on Trevor Benjamin on the same day says a lot. Anyway, back to old Ade, who scored only a handful of times during the season in which Leicester were relegated, one of which was a scrappy effort against Sunderland, prompting a celebration that could have been deemed slightly OTT. Not by us though, as he's a big fella... Way back in the year 64 today, and Emperor Nero was proving just as popular as Leicester's hapless forward, as he watched as Rome burned. After a blaze broke out in the merchant area of the great city, Nero apparently played his lyre and sang from a safe distance. Which is nice.

Always remember Peter Taylor when trying to justify paying so much saying " Their chairman assured me he was worth £5+ Million" Durrrr.....
Simi Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 THAT game against Liverpool will forever remain with me.
renards Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 Even so I'd swap him for Campbell. Leicester paid £5+ M during a time of panic by all clubs suddenly cash rich due to a massive new sky deal, teams were buying any old crap. hence the prices went up. Campbell is diifferent, the clubs potless + not generating enough to run the club (exist only through MM loans) yet we blow £2+M on a player with a worse pedigree than ade
Asha Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 THAT game against Liverpool will forever remain with me. Same. I also seem to remember the Newcastle home game that year in about the 92nd minute he missed an absolute sitter.
Lets Be having You Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 he Missed so many Stitters,i began to wonder if he had problems with is eyesight, but then,i just knew he was Shite.
davieG Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 Always remember Peter Taylor when trying to justify paying so much saying " Their chairman assured me he was worth £5+ Million" Durrrr..... I heard their Chairman said 'you can have him £3.5mill not a penny less' to which Taylor responded 'no way it's £5mill + or there's no deal'

Didnt realise it was 8 years ago. Man, time flies when your having fun!
Corky Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 THAT game against Liverpool will forever remain with me. Same here. Those chances should have been put away by any striker. I think in the same season he missed a last minute chance against Everton. It was a 0-0 draw as I recall.

billyfox1 Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 What a player!Even worse than Howard or Hayles Not much worse. Atleast he was playing crap in the prem. Imagine if we paid £5m for Howard or Hayles.
Corky Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 Newcastle Was it Newcastle? I thought it was Everton. Both were 0-0 weren't they? It was great when he scored against Sunderland though, the reaction and all that.

It was definately Newcastle because I was there - one of my first ever games so I remember it well. The Everton one that year was goal-less too.
Cheese Me Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 What a player!Even worse than Howard or Hayles Sorry, but that simply isn't true. Nowhere near good enough for where we were then (we went top of the premiership soon afterwards) but still much better than most of what he have now
ASH17LCFC Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 Scored more then DJ did a season and he was playing in the Premiership.
the manc Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 fond memories combine that with a 3.2 million signing of matt jones and 1.6 for tricky trev! nearly 10 million worth of shit!
act smiley Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 I never thought Matt Jones was that bad - overpriced, but not to the extent of most purchases of that era. If he'd not stuffed his knee up I don't think he'd be mentioned in these kinds of threads, just forgotten due to averageness. Ade is hard to compare because well, he's just a decent championship player and its hard to compare whether he's empirically worse than the strikers we've had since due to all the variations in both where the club is, the quality of team mates (after all, some pretty cack strikers could have finished the chances we created for him) and so on but eventually, its just arguing over the consistency of shit. Whether he's the "worst ever" is debatable, that he was thoroughly useless isn't.

l444ry Posted 18 July 2008 Posted 18 July 2008 And the sad thing is that Akinbiyi was superior in vitrually every department to golden boy Matty Fryatt. How we have fallen..........
