Mark Posted 6 April 2005 Share Posted 6 April 2005 A FOOTBALLER has died from head injuries inflicted in a fight at the end of a Sunday league match. Thomas Slattery, 39, a father of nine, died in hospital less than an hour after clashing with rival players as the teams walked off the pitch to their changing rooms. There had been an earlier scuffle in the closing minutes of an ill-tempered match between St Joseph’s and Lozells AMG in the North Birmingham Sunday League. Team-mates described how Mr Slattery was attacked after the final whistle when he tried to apologise to an opponent for a hard tackle. As the midfielder suffered a fit on the ground, two other players allegedly continued to attack him until his team-mates intervened. Three men, aged 25, 27 and 29, all from Birmingham, were arrested on suspicion of murder. They have since been granted bail while further police inquiries are made. David Rennie, 17, a team-mate, said: “It was Tommy’s first match for St Joseph’s. His brother, Edward, is the manager and he was helping out because we were short. He normally plays for another team and I can’t believe this happened to him on his first match with us. “About ten to fifteen minutes before the end of the game Tommy tackled one of the opposition players. After this, he got subbed off because he was injured. “At the end of the game, Tommy went up to the player from Lozells to say ‘sorry’ as they were walking back to the changing rooms, but the guy just hit Tommy and he fell to the floor. “The player was just swinging at him with his fists while Tommy was down. “Tommy got back up to pick up his bags but another player from their team came up to him and smacked him in the temple with his right fist and Tommy just fell to the floor and started having fits. “All of our team rushed over to try and help him but another of their players threw the ball at his head while he was on the floor having a seizure. “A few players from Lozells hung around to see if they could help, but the people who carried out the assault ran off. “There was nothing that anyone could do for him and we just called an ambulance to help him. Tommy’s brother was there by his side, trying to talk to him, but there was no response. I can’t believe this has happened.†Police were called to the pitch, at a leisure centre in Kingstanding, Birmingham, on Sunday.

davieG Posted 6 April 2005 Share Posted 6 April 2005 Now that really does make me despair and should be warning to all those people who seem to get some sort of perverse pleasure from verbally abusing people, one step up from verbal abuse is physical abuse and it sure doesn't take much to move up a step. Sparky Posted 6 April 2005 Share Posted 6 April 2005 im sure tomassi will agree with me that certain sunday league teams just go out to injure people , if the authoritys dont act soon then it wont be long before this sort of incident happens again

I refereed a couple of Sunday League games once when the ref didn't turn up, I had no linos either; the abuse I took especially from the team I was managing was unbelievable when I gave the oppo a legitimate penalty. Later on in the game they oppo turned on me as well. I certainly didn't add any extra time on. Never ever would I do it again. Talk about angy young men, where was the enjoyment. BartonFox Posted 6 April 2005 Share Posted 6 April 2005 Why people are against the return of the death penalty is beyond me. What right do they have to deny 9 children a father over a game of football?

To all those who want the death penalty I say to you Stefan Kiszko , he died six months after coming out of prison.
C-man Posted 6 April 2005 Share Posted 6 April 2005 What sick b*stards. Not only is it disgraceful to attack anyone for any reason, but over a bad tackle, and denying 9 children a father. These men should go and die horribly in a ditch somewhere...

This isn't to say I agree with the death penalty, to be honest I agree with the arguments for and against it!!
