Bus Crash.

Two people critically injured in the incident have been flown from the scene in Alton by air ambulance to nearby hospitals.

The crash is understood to have occurred when a coach travelling from the nearby Alton Towers theme park collided with a number of vehicles on a bridge over the River Churnet before crashing into a garden.

Emergency services said a 20-year-old woman in a critical condition has been airlifted to a hospital in Selly Oak, Birmingham.

Another victim seriously hurt has been taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke on Trent.

Chief Inspector of Staffordshire police, John Maddox said the bus had "careered down a steep hill, collided with a number of vehicles, before falling off the bridge onto a private garden".

Murray Macgregor from West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed to Sky News that one man had died.

He said the tour coach had been carrying around 70 people following a visit to the nearby Alton Towers theme park, approximately half a mile away.

Forty-four 'walking wounded' were taken to Alton Towers hotel, half a mile away, for examination.

It is thought that many of the victims do not have English as their first language.

I feel well bad - You go out for an enjoyable day, and what does it come too. :(

I know mate,

They were only going for a day out at Alton Towers.

Sad stuff, hope all the injured make a full recovery.

Shame one has already been killed.

Life's short, eh? Take your fun and love where you can get it while you can.

This kind of thing blows, poor lambs.

Sounds awful and as if the numbers will get worse.

The roads around Alton Towers are appalling, totally unsuited to carrying the sort of traffic generated by such a massive theme park - particularly buses and HGV's - and the steep hills mean that any malfunction such as brake failure on a big vehicle would potentially lead to disaster.

Obviously it's too early to know why the accident happened but what a tragic end to what should have been a wonderful day out.

Knew you'd point that out, not that your wrong.

the village just before the entrance is a nightmare

there's first a small village centre to go through with lanes not large enough and brick walls intruding on you which is closely followed by that VERY steep hill down to the entrance

if my memory serves me of course, although i'm sure the village is older than the theme park

That Village would be Alton :giggle:

Yeah, alot longer, and the reason why they haven't ripped it all up and made it safer is the residence don't want the agro, as well as thousands of people plowing through their once fairly quiet village every day.

The Theme Park doesn't actually do much for the local economy either, I must of been to Alton Towers about 10 times and I don't think I've spent a penny in Alton.
