Rams Reserve Clash For Foxes

Posted on: Tue 19 Aug 2008

Leicester City will field a strong side for their Reserve team friendly match at Derby County on Tuesday lunchtime (12noon).

First-team squad members David Martin, Harry Worley, Bruno N'Gotty, Nicky Adams and James Wesolowski are all included in the 16-man squad.

The Foxes have opted out of the FA Premier Reserve League this season but will play a succession of behind-closed-doors friendlies throughout the course of the campaign.

Squad: Martin, Magunda, Worley, N'Gotty, Rowe-Turner, Adams, Wesolowski, Cox, Hayes, Odhiambo, King C, Beswick, O'Neill, Garner, Cisak, Burns.

Beswick's back could prove useful as back up for LB although it looks like he's just a sub.

At least it's encouraging that he's back. Bit surprised to see O'Neill as a sub. Ah well, what's it matter. We can't watch em so can't form any reasonable judgements about whether any of them are likely to be first team contestants.

Obviously Martin, Adams and Weso are in the picture but I cannot easily see anyone else figuring unless they go out on loan first. Beswick maybe, if he stays free of injury, O'Neill if he's very lucky but that would seem about it.

What with not playing in a League, and having nothing but a few weatherworn scouts and club staff on the touchline, I can imagine it being bloody hard for anyone to get motivated in the circumstances.

If i was Weso i'd be handing in my transfer request right about now.

You may be right but I'm not certain. Weso's on a long contract and presumably on reasonably good money. I'm not convinced he could command better elsewhere and there's still some chance he'll get his place back either through injury or loss of form though Kishishev provides competition and he's not the only one.

For me Weso's biggest problem is that he doesn't make enough happen and if used predominently as a defensive midfielder then he doesn't have the added advantage of height that King has. It is no coincidence that our defence has done better since King was picked. Weso's best way forward would be to improve his effect as a maker of goals by being more positive with his passing otherwise I don't see him ticking enough boxes.

He'd be a natural challenger for Oakley's place in that they fulfill a similar role but Oakley's doing okay and, as captain, doesn't seem likely to be dropped. It's a dilemma for Weso especially at this stage of his career but whether he should fight for his place or move depends entirely on his own thoughts and attitudes.

Weso should consume lots of calcium, get his bones strong, get fit and lose his habit of always having to be in his central midfield partner's shadow.

I hope you're reading Jimbo.

Which considering how shit our central midfielders have been in the past few years isn't a good thing.

In all honesty, I think Wesolowski is still our best central midfielder to keep things ticking over and winning the ball. But in the past 18 months his game hasn't moved on from that. His passing has got worse and that upsets me, as he had always shown his ability at youth, reserve and at first team level that his passing could be sublime and make things happen.

I know Thracian will disagree with me here, but I prefer the partnership of Oakley and Wesolowski than Oakley and King. Purely because I don't think we get the best out of either Oakley or King when they play together, but Wesolowski allows the other midfield partner to do what they do best as Weso will always be on hand to mop up.

Since King and Oakley linked up in midfield we've not conceded a goal and the opposition have had nothing more than scraps for chances apart from that colossal cock-up involving Mattock against Stockport in the cup.

I've watched both play countless times and have previously shared your long held view that Wesolowski has ability but as time has gone on he just doesn't seem to effect enough while King has constantly made things happen both in Academy and Reserve matches and increasingly now in first team games, including his contribution to our clean sheets.

Watch Weso and King play for the reserves and it is King who scores goals and creates goals. He would have scored in the Cup match for an excellent tip onto the post by the Stockport goalkeeper.

I think Oakley/King's "mopping up" at Stockport was excellent. The whole team, including the much maligned Gradel, didn't give the opposition a moment's peace once possession was lost and that came from the home manager.

I agree about Weso's passing gettingworse - for whatever reason - and am concerned that he's too much a sideways passer these days and we had enough of that with Hughes and Jarrett. Oakley finds it hard to drive into the box now but he is trying again and, denied the ball, the pair work really well together trying to get it back.

In some ways the pair are starting to look like Kingy and Tom Tejan-Sie looked in the Academy set-up in that they were always around for one another and recognised when one went forard the other stayed back a bit as cover. To me it's been a key point in our collective stability.

True we still need more goals but the new attackers are all still finding their feet and we've failed to use Porter enough. Once those two factors are sorted, and peopl like Gradel and Porter get the wider more roving role they need, we'll score goals no problem.

Especially if Pearson develops two separate strike pairings and uses them.

I don't deny that and since King has come in to the first team , he's barely been given the chance to get forward to do what he's best at. He has done that at youth and reserve level for whatever reason, often because he'll have a midfielder alongside him who compliments him well. Wesolowski I believe is better suited to do this than Oakley. However, I don't think Oakley will be dropped. I hope Wesolowski finds his form and makes an impression, i'd prefer him to be our defensive midfielder so that we could allow the 'other' midfielder to get forward and create things.

Alright, Hayes scored.

No-one says Weso doesn't ever get forward and it's exactly what he needs to do but what worries me far more is that City conceded three with Weso and Kishishev as the engine of the team.

Not suprised with that defence.

I nearly mentioned that this morning but thought, no, let's give em a chance. However, everyone knows that backlkine is vulnerable and it's fair to remember we should be attacking as a team and defending as a team. Sadly I'm not sure that team is truly capable of either.
