La Bamba Posted 29 September 2008 Posted 29 September 2008 http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewAr..._168165507.html29 September 2008 Versleijen calls up Euro youngsters SYDNEY – Australia coach Jan Versleijen has named five Europe based players in the 20-man squad that will take part in AFF U-19 Youth Championship, which kicks-off in Thailand on October 5. The Dutchman has included midfielder Scott Balderson and keeper Alex Cisak, who ply their trade in England with Conference National side Stevenage Borough and Championship outfit Leicester City respectively; Peter Cvetanovski, a promising full-back who recently inked a two-year deal with Germany’s Borussia Mönchengladbach; Greece-based Andreas Govas; and defender Ryan McGowan, captain of the U-19’s of Scottish side Hearts. The quintet joins 13 A-League players and two called-up from the Australian Institute of Sport as Versleijen fine tunes the Young Socceroos ahead of their trip to Saudi Arabia for the 2008 AFC U-19 Championship. “We recently held a short training camp in Europe to have a look at a number of overseas based players,” said the former Al Jazira and JEF United coach. "As a result I have included a number of those overseas based players along with the Australian based players in this squad that will compete in Thailand. “I believe we have a good team, with a mix of players with special qualities as well as good team players.” Thought Cisak was comitting himself to Poland, good news for us, welcome back fingersave.

lookwhaticando Posted 29 September 2008 Posted 29 September 2008 Maybe he's not the Polish looking chap who posts on here very infrequently, after all.
Fosse Boy Posted 29 September 2008 Posted 29 September 2008 Think he was born in Krakow but moved to a Oz as a young lad, if Football Manager is anything to go by...
NextPlease Posted 29 September 2008 Posted 29 September 2008 Does this mean another 6 games will get cancelled due to International call ups....
JakeShingler Posted 29 September 2008 Posted 29 September 2008 Does this mean another 6 games will get cancelled due to International call ups.... Probably.
misiuj Posted 30 September 2008 Posted 30 September 2008 Born in Krakow, moved to Australia when he was 2 1/2, moved to Leicester City when he was 15 - Has played for the Polish U/17 setup - Will be a good way for the Leicester management to see that he is capable of first team football, and maybe they'll actually give their most talented keeper a run.
Thracian Posted 30 September 2008 Posted 30 September 2008 Good luck to the lad but I wonder how these things are decided. Level of football they're playing? Status of the club they're at? Videos? Managerial recommendation? Or does someone actually stand out there and watch them? How do they decide in Australia that someone is the best Australian qualified under 20 in the world? I'm not saying he isn't. Just asking how they know?

La Bamba Posted 6 October 2008 Author Posted 6 October 2008 http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/86071,aussi...sink-china.aspxAussie Young Guns Sink China Staff Writer Oct 6 2008 13:12 THE Young Socceroos enjoyed a 3-1 win over China in their opening match of the ASEAN Football Federation Under 19 Championships in Thailand. After conceding a goal three minutes into the match, Milos Lujic equalised for the Qantas Young Socceroos two minutes later, neatly placing his shot past the Chinese keeper from a James Holland pass. Lujic then netted his second goal in the 18th minute when he headed home a Tahj Minniecon cross. Midway through the second half, the Qantas Young Socceroos had a chance to extend their lead when Thomas Oar hit the cross bar with a great strike. Unfortunately, James Holland was unable to head in the rebound. Mitch Nichols did finally score the Qantas Young Socceroos third goal in the 74th minute when he headed home a long lofted pass from Peter Cvetanovski from inside the box. Qantas Young Socceroos Head Coach Jan Versleijen was happy with his team’s first match of the tournament. He said: “This was a good win to start with. Our players showed good mentality coming from 1-0 down to win 3-1. “The new players I have brought into the squad fitted in well especially Ryan McGowan. “Although, there are still some areas we need to improve on like our concentration in the latter stage of each half and our composure. In the other match of the tournament, the Korea Republic defeated host nation Thailand 1-0. Qantas Young Socceoos line up: Alex Cisak, Peter Cvetanovski, Seb Ryall, Tahj Minniecon (Sam Munro 78), James Holland, Milos Lujic (Jason Naidovski 67), Mitchell Nichols, Nikolas Tsattalios, Tom Oar, Ryan McGowan, Andreas Govas(Scott Balderson 30) The Qantas Young Socceroos will meet the Korea Republic in the second match of the AFF U19 Youth Championships on Tuesday 7 October (Kick-off 5:00pm TST). :chant:
La Bamba Posted 10 October 2008 Author Posted 10 October 2008 http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/86423,young...ai-triumph.aspxYoung Guns Thai Triumph Oct 10 2008 09:13 A GOAL from Melbourne Victory's Nathan Elasi proved decisive as the Young Socceroos triumphed 2-1 over Thailand in the ASEAN Under 19 Championships. The first half was fairly evenly contested with both teams having good chances which were unrewarded. At half-time, coach Jan Versleijen made only one change bringing on Nikolas Tsattalios for James Brown. The Young Socceroos scored in the 53rd minute when Mitch Nicholls gathered the ball in the front half, ran to the top of the box and swept one neatly past the goalkeeper. The pace stepped up when Tahj Minniecon was brought on for Andreas Govas in the 54th minute, with Minniecon making an impact six minutes later with a trademark run down the right, to sidestep the defence from just inside the box with a pinpoint cross to Nathan Elasi who made no mistake in giving Australia their second goal. Thailand then stepped up a gear and tested the Australian defence with two impressive saves by Alex Cisak within one minute of each other. Thailand kept up the pressure and rewarded 11 minutes later when a well-worked move to the Thai striker at the top edge of the box went past Cisak. Versleijen was pleased with another win. He said: "We have finished the group stage of the tournament in top position and that was our aim. "In these first three games I have used as many players as possible, but now that we're moving into the knockout stage, I will be using the strongest possible team especially as we're also preparing for the Asian Championships later in the month." Versleijen said that the second half was an improved performance on the first, and he was particularly pleased with the way the midfield worked hard to create chances. This was the third match of the tournament, Alex was on the bench for the second match so I didn't post a report.
