Kilworthfox Posted 2 October 2008 Posted 2 October 2008 I have very recently started to look into my families past. I have been searching through the national archieves information with the initial info that I had. I was wondering if anyone else has ever researched their own pasts and had any tips or stories which may be of use or interest? At the moment I have problems with grave yards I don't like standing on people's graves, I think it is disrespectful??? Also I get a horrid feeling in my stomach when I do, all in the mind I know! It is really difficult at times to get to some graves to look for info as they are all so tightly packed together, bloody churches. I blame Rod Stewart Oh and it is bloody expensive to research things! Anyone know much about researching in Eire? Anyway cheers for any help / tips offered

Bellend Sebastian Posted 2 October 2008 Posted 2 October 2008 I don't think you need to worry about walking over graves. The floors of a lot of cathedrals are made up pretty much exclusively of gravestones, so you cannot even go in them without walking on top of someone's corpse, so the church obviously aren't too arsed about it. If you're doing it for good reasons and with respect for those buried there, the departed souls probably aren't going to be fussed either - it's not like you're going in there to do a poo or sniff glue or something
AmericanScott Posted 2 October 2008 Posted 2 October 2008 My great great grandfather was a slave trader. According to tales passed on from each generation.
Webbo Posted 2 October 2008 Posted 2 October 2008 My uncle research our family tree (my dads side anyway) back 500 years, which is about as far as an ordinary person can get apparently. Nothing exciting I'm afraid, just generations of farm labourers.
Asha Posted 2 October 2008 Posted 2 October 2008 Yeah I've had a bit of a go of it, only managed to fully trace to the start of the last century though. Could have gone a lot further with more time/resources.
Guest Posted 2 October 2008 Posted 2 October 2008 My paternal lineage has been traced back, and it's very much indigenous to these isles. We're Cornish.
Samilktray Posted 2 October 2008 Posted 2 October 2008 This would be quite interesting. How do you start off?
