maddog Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 This has got to stop Pearson its costing us points. All he needs to do is bring on some pace Dj or Dickov, or even Hobbs today and defend the 2-0 lead depending on whether you want to sit back or attack and he doesn't do it. The players all relax and we end up wasting points. It almost cost us 2 points at home to yeovil tuesday. Just make some subs after 70 minutes Pearson and we won't throw away leads like this.

I'm not one for needless substitutions but there were clear reasons why we should probably have made one at 2-0. Howard was on a booking and was sure to miss the S****horpe match and we had two strikers who needed to get back into the pace of League football. That coincided with the need for Pearson to focus his players on their closing down and tactical attitude for the last few minutes.

Not convinced by Pearson in some respects

Cobbo Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 Pearson has us in the top 2. I think we should all shut up and let him do his job, because he's doing a good one. Idiots. Learn the bloody game.
Stuliasz Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 Pearson has us in the top 2.I think we should all shut up and let him do his job, because he's doing a good one. Idiots. Learn the bloody game. Absolutely - no manager gets it spot on every game. He's done enough right to get us into the mixer at the top and for that he should be praised. Maybe he should have made some subs but if he had, and it had still gone tits up he'd be receiving even more abuse for doing that.
Chromophobia Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 I think people are forgetting this is Pearson's first proper management job, and he's clearly encountering things, like throwing away leads happening. I think he's intelligent enough to figure out how to curb throwing leads away. We're still in the top 2, yeah it's disappointing, but some people are being too harsh on Pearson.

But the longer the competing pack stays with us the greater the pressure gets on us. It's the expectancy thing. We really need to get ahead before the pressure mounts. And that means focusing for 90 minutes. Every game. Not 45 or even 80. People have moaned that we're physically soft but that's not really the case at all. So often we all but do the job but then fail to finish it. It's mentally we're soft. We just don't demand enough of ourselves as a team and some of our fans are just the same.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 This isn't the first time Pearson's not felt confident enough to use his bench effectively. It's a suprise after a couple of games where a lack of a decision has cost us and when he was shown how effective a good subsitution can be with the Rovers game. Changes win matches!
davieG Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 I don't think the lack of substitutions in itself cost us the 2 points, there's been many an example of unnecessary subs costing us points. That said I think the Howard situation was a justifiable reason to put another striker on instead of Howard.
Corky Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 As Thrac says, it's a mental problem really. At 2-0 something seems to happen, like the fear of conceding means that another one will definitely come. We do seem more comfortable at 1-0. Against Hartlepool at home, we were comfortable. At Col U, we were pretty safe. I don't understand it.
Bert Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 I thought a sub would've been about right after we was 2-0 up, with the game seemingly in the bag, it gives the chance (with long enough to at least do something) for someone else to get some time under their belt, and bring a fresh approach. It worked for Swindon today.

At 2-0, we're comfortable, but too comfortable for our own good, as we sit back more on bigger leads than smaller ones.
Corky Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 At 1-0 up. We attack more as there is that fear that one more goal, and it's all level again. At 2-0, we're comfortable, but too comfortable for our own good, as we sit back more on bigger leads than smaller ones. You're right, we need to find a medium, where we can go 2-0 up, still attack but not as much as before I suppose. This has happened three times this season, so it will be in the players minds if we go 2-0 up again, and that is worrying.
Thracian Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 Pearson has us in the top 2.I think we should all shut up and let him do his job, because he's doing a good one. Idiots. Learn the bloody game. I think it is you that needs to learn the game. It is by no means impossible for us to secure a top two finish but we are needlessly making it hard for ourselves. And the reason we are doing so is not about ability but about attitude. Someone mentioned that we got 2-0 up and became cocky - in other words we stopped focusing on doing the things which had allowed us to command the second half. It's the manager's job to guard against that. Losing one two-goal advantage in a season might be down to all sorts of things but losing three is a serious problem because there are reasons for it and psychologically it is damaging to us and encouraging to our opponents. Teams aiming for promotion will always lose points and even games occasionally but they cannot afford to squander points and that's what we have done today and on other occasions. I mentioned last week that we never give a 90 minute performance in the League and it was no different today. Because mentally we failed to see the game through.
act smiley Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 At 2-0 we were cruising a little too much, but the thing that was obvious to me was that we desperately needed a change on the left wing, as we just drifted into the middle from there and they were often doubling up on Mattock - they ended up getting their second goal out of that too, which was all the more annoying, especially as we had plenty of options in terms of players like Dickov to stick there to chase down the last ten minutes.
davieG Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 Perhaps it also indicates that our defence is not as hot as it seems especially against a team that makes a determined assault or is allowed easy possession.

DanTheFox07 Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 Plus the Fact we need our strikers to have some sort of fitness for when they do play, bringing campbell on in 90th min is hardly gonna do much for his fitness or confidence! so now howard is out and weve got dickov or campbell who are blatantly not going to be match fit!!! sort it out pearson!
