Mascherano is now the heartbeat of Liverpool - even more so than Gerrard i think. His elevation to Argentina captain has done wonders for his self belief. Fantastic player.

Every team does need a 'water carrier' - he certainly allows Gerrard to get forward and not worry about defending so much. He may be Argentinian, but i love him.

He may be Argentinian, but i love him. Alonso has been equally as effective with Mascherano this season probably more effective. All the rumours about Alonso leaving made him focus even harder for Liverpool this season and he has been quality. The formation that Rafa has adopted now at Liverpool really does get the best out of Gerrard with Alonso and Mascherano sitting in front of Carragher and co. Allows Gerrard to do what he wants and today he wanted to rip Newcastle apart. Mascherano and Alonso could be one of the main factors in Liverpool pushing all the way this season. With Torres still to come back up top and Skrtel to come back in defence and solid things up even more then things could get alot brighter for Liverpool.

It remains to be seen whether the scousers can cope with the pressure that leading the league into spring would generate. It's proved too much for previous Liverpool sides, and may do so once again this time around. With so many teams involved in the relegation scrap, expect many more sides to come to Anfield and park the bus in the penalty area. Even with Torres in the team, Liverpool have struggled to break them down. And Benitez's constant rotations may ultimately prove his undoing, and let Chelski and Manyoo overtake Liverpool at some stage in the run-in.
