Ultra Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Messi has been a class above anyone playing in Europe this season. Gerrard has been very hit and miss, especially away from Anfield.
Uncle Albert Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Messi has been a class above anyone playing in Europe this season.Gerrard has been very hit and miss, especially away from Anfield. Probably because Ronaldo has been injured for most off the season. Messi has been good this year and you cant take that away from him but Ronaldo will storm it in the second half off the season. Gerrard is still the pound for pound best midfielder in the World, by far. If I could buy one player in the World it would be Gerrard and build my team around him. He gets you goals, assists, brilliant captain and all the attributes you need in the game. I cant think off a fault he he has in his footballing game.

Take the Liverpool shirt off his back & put another club shirt on him & he wouldn't be half the player he is.
Uncle Albert Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Take the Liverpool shirt off his back & put another club shirt on him & he wouldn't be half the player he is. So he would lose all off his footballing attributes because off a shirt? I dont think so. Yes the shirt has alot to do with it but he is still a superb footballer without it. England dont know how lucky they are to have a Steven Gerrard.

He wouldn't give half the effort he does, the man strives on passion. As Ultra says, he hasn't performed away from home this season & if you look, he is always better at Anfield. I am not arguing the man isn't one of the best in the world, I don't doubt it for a minute, what I'm saying is, he wouldn't be the same player if he was to move to another club.

Well we will never know because he will never leave Liverpool. He has performed away from Anfield aswell, he gave his best performance off the season at Stamford Bridge. Ran the show at Spurs. He just performs even better at Anfield. Genius, an absolute football genius.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Gerrard isn't really a midfielder anymore IMO. Xavi is head and shoulders above everyone. He's a complete midfielder. From Euro 2008 into this season with Barca, he's been taking the best midfielders in the world back to school.
Uncle Albert Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Gerrard isn't really a midfielder anymore IMO. Second striker?

Fez of Mahrez Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Second striker? Yep. He's got licence this season. Any other classy midfielder would cause havoc if he had two world-class holding midfielders behind him to do all the dirty work. Gerrard's obviously excellent at what he does but it's not really a proper midfield role anymore. As demonstrated by his struggles with England when he has to do a more all-round job.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Im quite a big fan of Iniesta at Barca, looks superb everytime I watch him. Another superb player who has, like Xavi, backed it up with a tournament at last. More versatile than Xavi perhaps, cos he looks equally brilliant on the wing. Really looking forward to Barcelona coming up against an English team this season (fingers crossed).

Yea I think if I continue I will get in a massive debate about Gerrard and the England team. But if Gerrard was aloud to do what he wants in the England midfield with someone disciplined like Michael Carrick and Gareth Barry behind him then I dont think we would have a problem. Gerrard was brilliant for England in the World Cup '02 qualification games when he was a out n out midfielder. When Lamps wasnt considered.

If England had a Torres-type player to lead the line then I'd like to see Carrick and Barry play in the same team - with Gerrard further forward to see if he can do what he does for Liverpool. But Capello's doing a good job at the moment so let's see what happens.

Messi was injured last season though which virtually ruined his chances, Ronaldo won it deservedly in the end. Ronaldo won't "Storm It". It would take a lot to outshine Messi, the boy has been genius this season as have Barcelona. As for Gerrard being the best midfielder in the world that is a matter of opinion, I wouldn't agree with your assessment at all, He is a great player, I would pick a few more midfielders before him though. Mascherano has been more important for Liverpool in my opinion. But maybe we view the game differently.
Darkzzz_ Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Xavi is head and shoulders above everyone. He's a complete midfielder. This guy knows his stuff. Bang on. The best in the world in my opinion, even Iniesta is a class midfielder. Very under rated in my opinion.
Uncle Albert Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Mascherano has been more important for Liverpool in my opinion. But maybe we view the game differently. Nah not this season. Mascherano was away with Argentina at the start and if you ask any Liverpool fan Xabi Alonso has been their best player this season, my Old Man has said Alonso has had his best season with out a doubt this year. We will only have to see about Ronaldo's second half off the season at the end off the season.

My mates dad is a season ticket holder there, Mascherano and Alonso are the players of the season so far for most of them. Yes, we will see at the end of the season. If he goes on to outshine Messi then he deserves to win it again.
sdb Posted 17 January 2009 Posted 17 January 2009 Daniel Alves? No it's gotta be Messi atm. Ronaldo last year.
boosmanana Posted 17 January 2009 Posted 17 January 2009 Gerrard for me loses the ball too much, fair enough, most of the time he goes and wins the ball back, but if you count the amount of times he loses the ball during most of Liverpool or England's matches, its pretty frightening that people can put him in the same class as Xavi, Messi, and the like.
Uncle Albert Posted 17 January 2009 Posted 17 January 2009 Daniel Alves? Thats brillaint. Hahaha. Gerrard for me loses the ball too much, fair enough, most of the time he goes and wins the ball back, but if you count the amount of times he loses the ball during most of Liverpool or England's matches, its pretty frightening that people can put him in the same class as Xavi, Messi, and the like. Hmmm. Righto.
boosmanana Posted 17 January 2009 Posted 17 January 2009 That said, he's still England's best player in my humble opinion. Just not quite in the same bracket as Messi, Ronaldo, Xavi
shen Posted 17 January 2009 Posted 17 January 2009 Du, du, du, du, Marcus Senna. He's definitely had an absolutely phenomenal year
JakeShingler Posted 17 January 2009 Posted 17 January 2009 Do not say that ever, ever again!World Player of the Year says it all though but each to their own. Messi is very, very good but I honestly think Ronaldo has that little bit more. Gerrard is the most complete player on the planet though. Why
