Angry residents form human chain to stop Google Street View car from filming their village

Google may have stated its intention to photograph the 'great majority' of Britain's roads for its controversial Street View mapping website.

But when the internet firm's car arrived to capture the historic village of Broughton on camera, it was the locals who snapped.

Fearing the images could be used by burglars to scout for suitable homes to raid, villagers formed a human barrier in the road to stop the Street View car in its tracks.

And they emerged victorious after forcing the vehicle to turn around and leave the village.

The problem is that we have no law of privacy, as such. If someone wants to take photos, as long as they don't physically come onto your property, they can.

And why is that a problem exactly? The right to drive, walk or cycle around the public land of Britain is hard fought for. This is no different. The police should have moved the people out of the way. Right to protest yes, right to deliberately stop someone from excercising their legal rights no. I hope the google car goes back and photgraphs the Village.

Where do you stop the ridiculous idea that we should not be able to photograph anyone else's property? Do we want famers bannning the taking of Photos at Bradgate park becuase you might get one of their fields in the background? Should we stop filming MP's if they walk outside someone house?

I mean the problem is the argument that the people who are moaning are using. I should have been clearer. I personally don't give a crap. Who's to say that burglars don't already case areas out and use their phones to photograph potential properties, so to suggest Google are responsible is stupid. What is more stupid is now these moaners have given the thicker burglars the idea.

And decribed their area as Wealthy in the national press. Funny really! There are already tens of thousand of photos on Rightmove and the like, including internal photos, so really it is comedy people moaning about this.

Exactly. Don't you just love a bit of hypocrisy?

I doubt it will come down my way. I have some plans if it does. :)

Is there a list or something somewhere that says when they'll be photographing your village?

You so want to be on there. :giggle:
