fox123 Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 I am a qualified risk manager, been doing the job for 7 years now in a credit betting call centre environment...Was told a couple of months ago that I was being made redundant. Trouble I had was, there is no work in what I do around Leicester or indeed the Midlands so, I would have had to look for work in either London or Leeds. Luckily for me I have been doing volunteer work for a few months, originally mentoring offenders due to be released in to society looking to get back on the straight and narrow, and more recently I have been helping people with learning difficulties look for work coaching them with interview techniques, that kind of thing... This volunteer work has helped me get a job (this week actually) in the NHS, working at Arnold Lodge medium secure psychiatric hospital as a support worker, which will obviously give me a lot more satisfaction than working in a boring office, but I am having to totally re-train in a totally different environment to what I am used too. I am 30 now and having to start from scratch, has anyone else ever had to totally change career direction, or going to have to because of being made redundant/current climate? ps If you are just bumming around at the moment, I would really recommend doing some volunteer work...Not only does it look good on your CV, it also gives you some personal satisfaction having made a difference to real people and their lives.
Lillehamring Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 well, firstly, you should feel very lucky that you have been given the opportunity to start from scratch. i kinda did the opposite, i moved back from london to leicester to work for a bank when i was 26ish... i lasted 6 years, before realising it was a black hole and that i'd lost so much time, and quit and went back to uni... that was much better and as a result led to me emmigrating, now i've just been made redundant again...so who knows. but drastic changes seem to be the norm for me, and in a way i'm kinda glad, i think i'd hate to be doing now what i was doing 15 years ago.
lcfc_jme Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 Glad to hear you managed to get yourself a new job, pal. Seems you've been quite fortunate in that respect when it's a bit of a struggle on the jobfront at the minute. Shows that a bit of committment pays off though. Arnold Lodge always used to scare me when I was a kid (well, I'm pretty sure it's the same one you're working at!) when I walked past it. Or even when I played indoor football there. Have a relative working there if it's the same place, I think.
Dr The Singh Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 I dunno if this helps or applies I went form being a research chmist and retrained in IT, I took a massive paycut and time out to retrain, and started at the bottom, making tea etc!! Fortunately I didn't have a mortgage etc, initially I found it tough going, as I went from working in Leicester to commuting to Birmingham, also I had bags of knowledge and skills but no experience!! Overall, I am very satisfied with what has happened and gone on, it was a journey, a tough one but challenging!! Good Luck
James. Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 Why have you wasted those 7 years? Sounds like you built up a lot of skills, had some success and did something you got at least some satisfaction out of, even if it was just improving your betting knowledge! Who knows, you may use that experience again in the future. Don't regret things, just look to new opportunities and grasp them. Look forward, not back.
fox123 Posted 27 March 2009 Author Posted 27 March 2009 Thanks for the comments guys... Yea I feel really fortunate I am able to kind of step out of one job and go into another, I also realised there wasn't much point pursuing jobs in the Private Sector as, well, there just isn't anything about, hence doing some volunteer work and looking at Public Sector positions. James, you are probably right I have gained some valuable experience in those seven years, and I thoroughly enjoyed the buzz that risk management brings (whilst watching football and horse racing at the same time), I just hope the tipsters don't dry up
Guest Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 I have changed career path, and I am coming to the end of a law degree, which has been hard work, and has meant some huge sacrifices. Next year, it's the biggie - the BVC, full time study, and enormous course fees. But I know I have made the right choices, and being older and all that, I have the support of my lovely hubby. Although I bet he'll be glad when I've done studying, and stop telling him boring facts and information!! Try not to think of the last 7 years as a waste, like James said, you have skill development, work experience etc, which will also look good on your CV. Good luck!

POTTER. Take note you BUM.
Monk Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 Sounds like you have not wasted 7 years at all. I am currently contemplating a big career change from Banking to the environmental sector and aI will be starting from scratch. It's all part of the journey - doing what you love is more important than the cost of it.

My sister used to work at Arnold Lodge. I think she enjoyed it there but there are some violent types there. She had a chair thrown at her once, but I think the chairs are built in now. Be careful though.
Daggers Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 I am 30 now and having to start from scratch, has anyone else ever had to totally change career direction, or going to have to because of being made redundant/current climate? Three times - it's no biggie. You'll be fine because this opens up an opportunity to do something you really fancy getting stuck into. All the best with whatever direction it takes
morris1234 Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 my mum worked at arnold lodge for years. used to freak me out aswell with the huge fences.
