davieG Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 Our crappy left back called up! Leicester City defender Joe Mattock is targeting more England success this summer. The locally-born left-back has been called-up to the under-19s squad for their elite round qualifiers towards the end of next month. Mattock said: "I've had the call-up for the under-19s and I'm hoping I'm lucky enough to also be involved with the under-21s for the European championships in Sweden in June. "I dreamed of playing for my country when I was a kid and love representing England." The under-19s host Scotland, Slovakia and Bosnia between May 21 and June 1 and the team that tops the group will progress to the European championship finals in Ukraine in July. document.getElementById('article-detail-impact-tile').innerHTML = document.getElementById('INVarticle-detail-impact-tile').innerHTML;document.getElementById('INVarticle-detail-impact-tile').innerHTML = ''; However, Mattock is also looking to retain his involvement with the under-21s, who he has already played for as an 18-year-old. The under-21s will be in Sweden in mid-June for the UEFA European Championships when they launch their campaign with group games against Finland, Spain and Germany. Last November, Mattock made his under-21s debut in a 2-0 win over Bulgaria, becoming the second youngest player to represent the age-group behind Arsenal's Theo Walcott.
Leicesterboi Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 Would now not be a good time to cash in? I think we should keep hold of Mattock as Powell may struggle in the CCC. I think Berner will be ahead of Mattock in some of the big games but in General I think NP gets the balance right between picking youth and experience in most games. Dont get me wrong I think Mattock is overrated, he isn't the greatest defender, and he can't beat a man so he's not really a left back nor a left midfielder. However, his final ball and technique are always of a high standard. There is obviously a real talent there otherwise he wouldn't keep getting these call up's Good Luck Joe

Anyway what do I know, Im not Nigel Pearson and I am a woman.
pooleyLCFC Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 Joe had a good season last season in the CCC so there is a high expectation of him. I feel that he is good and will only get better. When we played Hereford at home he replaced Berner in the first half who was marking that Ainsworth and causing a bit of trouble. Mattock came on and kept him quiet. He has a good delivery as well.
Leicesterboi Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 As opposed to Mattock whose struggled in League 1? Anyway what do I know, Im not Nigel Pearson and I am a woman. Powell is at the end of his career and Mattock is at the beginning. Mattock will only improve in my opinion. I am also a woman so that has no bearing on your or my opinion, don't put yourself down.

Thanks for that, I was being flippant about something that was said to me on another thread when I last posted my opinion about Mattock. Something along the lines of "get back to cooking and cleaning" was the gist Im hopeful if we keep him he will be better next season. That will be the best thing all round Yeah Powell is retiring at the end of the season isnt he?
JakeShingler Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 Well done too the lad quality player and respect him alot for not fooking off to Villa/West Ham when he could have. Loyal.
Munzie Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 It's a difficult one. I'm torn between cashing in on him, given the media hype (interested clubs etc) or keeping him as a developing player. For the money he would fetch, we could get a very decent full back. But, he is still learning his trade. Despite his inconsistent performances, there must be qualities within him that Pearce and Pearson see that allow him to play on a regular basis for club and country. I have no doubt that he could become a very good player. On balance, I would keep. When he is on top of his game (very similar to Gilbert) he goes about his defensive duties well and also provides decent support in going forward. More consistent performances would persuade a lot of fans to think the same.
Koke Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 Cash in + sell on clause. We can't go wrong with that. I just feel sometimes he plays like he has already made it. That's a dangerous mindset for a poxy little 18 year old.

Bryn Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 Isn't he still 18? The pressure put on him is unbelievable.
leftsideoverhere Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 Totally agree - I worry that hes believing the hype and has gone downhill ever since. If anyone can get his head straight again I'd bet on it being NP. So I say keep. Partly 'cos we'd really regret selling him if he did turn things up in the next few years, and partly because there aren't enough local lads in the team, and Mattock is one of a precious few. At my daughter's school (where he used to go) there are pictures of him up on the wall, and I'm sure it makes a difference to some of the kids there - we've talked on other threads about how to get more Leicester kids watching the foxes instead of being sofa-based fans of the big four. Well, having local kids make the team is a help, in terms of role models and so on, so if there's a chance Joe could make it at Leicester, I think we should back him. Doesn't necessarily mean I'd be against us getting in another left back and putting him under some pressure for his place, of course.
Ozwin Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 Isn't he still 18? The pressure put on him is unbelievable. This. Bloody hell people, he's young, he's got the footballing world at his feet, give him a chance ffs.
lou Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 This. Bloody hell people, he's young, he's got the footballing world at his feet, give him a chance ffs. Who's suggested we dont/havent?
City_4_Life Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 Well done Mattock. The lad has got great potential, and hopefully we can keep hold of him.
Edmund Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 Yeah Powell is retiring at the end of the season isnt he? He's not said yet. He is currently doing his coaching badges and has expressed a desire to stay at Leicester as a coach. I can personally see him playing another year with Charlton in league 1 next season as he has not ruled himself out playing for another season.
Ultra Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 Joe had a good season last season in the CCC so there is a high expectation of him. . You sure about that?
DeclanMC Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 I always liked the look of him to be honest but he needs a chance before people start judging him. I don't think he would have got half as many starts this season if pearson didn't rate him though.
TrickyTrev Posted 18 April 2009 Posted 18 April 2009 The criticism of Mattock on this board is laughable. He's got great delivery, is good in the air, can take the ball forward and is solid in the tackle. He's 18 and such is still a bit of a rough diamond, but the stick he gets is utterly ridiculous. Stearman got the same last season even though he was evidently a very good player. People would rather us play Chris Powell for a season than then best young left back in the country? Do me a favour.
