YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 0 LEICESTER CITY 3

Posted on: Sat 25 Apr 2009

A depleted Chelsea youth team was soundly beaten by a strong Leicester side at Cobham on Saturday afternoon.

Despite creating their fair share of chances, the young Chelsea side were unable to find a breakthrough against the more physical, direct visitors.

Going behind to an early goal did not help the cause, as a long ball up field was not dealt with, the Leicester forward outpacing makeshift right-back Jacopo Sala and curling beyond goalkeeper Sam Walker.

Chelsea responded by playing football, Conor Clifford, Daniel Philliskirk and Tom Taiwo making a tidy midfield three, while Milan Lalkovic delivered a string of dangerous crosses from his right-wing position, creating chances that were not taken.

A second Leicester goal just before half-time was fortuitous to say the least, Lalkovic's sliced clearance falling to a forward who made no mistake with his unlikely chance.

It was a big blow for the Blues, who replaced Taiwo with Portuguese youth international Aliu 'Kaby' Djalo at half-time. It was his colleague in the centre Philliskirk though who had the best chance to pull a goal back early on.

One on one with the Leicester keeper, he took too long deciding how best to finish allowing the angle to be narrowed and the save to be made.

Leicester's final goal was another ball over the top, centre-halves Tom Hayden and Ben Gordon, both more comfortable at full-back, were outpaced and the ball despatched past Walker.

It was simple stuff, but coach Dermot Drummy believes the experience was an important one for his players.

'They played a very strong side, their full FA Youth Cup side. We gave away an early goal which didn't help, and then missed a number of chances,' he analysed.

'It was disappointing but we were against a strong side that will probably win their league, a very direct, physical side and they deserved the victory.

WIth Ben Gordon and Tom Hayden at centre-half, with Rohan Ince out with a knee injury, they found it difficult to adapt. Sometimes with two full-backs playing there and Sala playing at right back, you are found wanting against a very forceful side, who do what they do very well.'

There remains just one league fixture left for the Academy, a trip to Watford this coming Saturday morning, with a 10.30am kick-off.

Chelsea team v Leicester (4-3-3): Sam Walker; Jacopo Sala, Tom Hayden, Ben Gordon, Nikki Ahamed; Conor Clifford, Tom Taiwo (sub Aliu Djalo h-t), Daniel Philliskirk; Milan Lalkovic, Adam Phillip, Gokhan Tore.

Winging, patronising, excuse making report. You lost 3-0 to the better team on the day - to use your own word - SIMPLE

No Aman Verma? He wasn't at the game on Friday either. Injury? I had him down as a possible sub this season and poss next unless he is sent out back to League 1 for some match experience. Hmmm. Out of all the schoolboys he was the one that stuck out because he would watch the games with intent and go down at half time to changing rooms, the rest of them sit with their ipods on and play 'tick' down by the concourse while i'm trying not to spill me lager!

What I don't get is why they played a makeshift right back and then complain that their centre halves were both more comfortable at full-back

I thought Aman Verma was too old for the academy. I may be wrong though.

Any chance of a report from the OS anytime soon? It's an excellent result, the kids have done exceptionally second half of the season and claimed some top scalps to lift themselves close to the top of the table and three or four places above where I expected them to finish.

It's hard to take the above report seriously. City have no chance of winning the League ahead of Tottenham as the table's top 10 shows, given that there's only on game left, against Portsmouth.

Nor would I ever describe City as a particularly physical side. Ours is still a young team in Academy terms and while they are fit enough and willing enough, nothing I've seen would set them apart as bruisers.

What they do have though is spirit and organisation and for the Chelsea end to come out with all that whinging, given their resources and the fact that they were at home is pathetic. They picked their team, not us, however good or bad it was. And 3-0 sounds emphatic.

We've had good days and bad over the season but I don't thinkl we've ever stooped to making excuses for a beating.

The latest weekend of results is not included in the table.

Getting their priorities right Thrac, new home kit (moneymaker) and season tickets (moneymaker) before any report on the academy.

I was at the game and Chelsea struggled to cope physically. Billy Kee played really well causing the defenders problems and Liam Moore impressed throughout the game. Chelsea included a midfielder that apparently was brought for £1million but he was not that great. The only player that played well for Chelsea was their right midfielder (don't know name ). If Leicester forwards released the ball quicker they would score loads more

Too right, after all Chelsea have no interest in any of that sort of crass commercialism and haven't for sometime.

i like that the lads playing centre back that were more comfortable at full back were outpaced. Surely the fact that they were full back should have helped in this instance. Sad article reminds me a bit of Phil Brown at Hull all excuses

Kee seems to have made quite a difference since his return from injury in the second part of the season. It'll be interesting to see how Liam does. He seems to put himself about and get into dangerous positions. Very positive.

Is this table up to date?? im sure i remember the report on the villa game saying we went ahead of them after beating them?? and that top spot could still be got.. then we drew against fulham and tottenham lost to norwich so they should still be able to do it.. would be nice to see an updated table though.

please dont hate me if im wrong about all that.

Kee seems to have made quite a difference since his return from injury in the second part of the season. It'll be interesting to see how Liam does given that we have an ex-centre-back as manager.

He really is a big, powerful lad and very dominant aerially. We'll just have to see how the rest of his game develops. Who scored for us?

Billy Kee got 2 goals and Elliot Chamberlain scored a screamer. Liam Moore is a centre midfielder so wont play centre back through lack of pace. The new players signed for next year are George Taft (CB) Kevin Knight (LB) Ellis Tebbut (CM) Liam Moore (CM) Shane Bryne (CM) Oliver Norburn (CM) Raj Gill (GK) and Jeffrey Schlupp (CF). They have high hopes for a few but as you can see by positions they will need to be adaptable

Lives round the corner from me. Can play right behind the strikers too. Got a lovely touch, pass and shot. Not forgetting he's lightning fast! Best of luck to him and his impending career!

Apologies for that. I was actually thinking of Cian Bolger. And he's hardly the quickest either.

Again, it would be helpful if the OS would at least make some attempt to keep us up to date. It really is a piss poor service at times.
