The People's Hero Posted 4 June 2009 Posted 4 June 2009 Afternoon all, Not been around much recently.. hope that you are all well. Looking for some advice. Anyone been away to Lake District/Peak District and if so do you have any advice on doing it on a bit of a budget? Better still, does anyone have a place there? Obviously I'm willing to pay, but haven't done anything like this before and don't really know what to look for or the best places (specifically) to look for accomodation! Secondly, is there a best time of year to go (looking outside of the obvious summer holiday window - we're not restricted to these times)?
Finnegan Posted 4 June 2009 Posted 4 June 2009 Cumberland pencil museum in Keswick. No. No. Nonono. No. NO! I got dragged through there by a friend of mine - most boring hour of my entire life. Best part of Keswick was a sandwich shop we found. I don't have advice on rented housing as I've always camped when I've been to either but I took about £100 / £150 on a four day trip to Keswick and wasn't up short. You'd spend less in the Peaks. They're definitely walking places to go, though, pretty boring for anything else although both are lovely if the weather's good. I wouldn't go outside of June/July/August unless I was a commited hyker. I'd recommend Edale in the Peaks and Keswick in the Lakes.

I went to the pencil museum, the only thing I remember is a massive pencil, and buying a newspaper because we were top of the Prem
The People's Hero Posted 4 June 2009 Author Posted 4 June 2009 I like to hike. I think I fancy the Peak District. I want to be right in the thick of the rurality though (that is a word, trust me) so I can just head out the door and straight in to some nice air and walkage. Also, anyone fancy coming? Seems a lot cheaper with 2 couples?

If you got to the peak district in July you can take in a cheeky pre season friendly in Chesterfield I am sure the Mrs would be happy with that!!
Katy Posted 4 June 2009 Posted 4 June 2009 Grassmere is lovely and Thornthwaite is beautiful, my sister got married there it's breathtaking. Stear clear of Kendal Mint Cake though, I still have vivid memories of throwing up all the way back from a school trip in Grassmere because of that disgusting stuff. Hope you're keeping well James
isaidno Posted 4 June 2009 Posted 4 June 2009 I went to the lake district a couple of weeks ago. I camped at a place called Eskdale, only £10 a night. Nice campsite with 3 pubs with in walking distance.
The People's Hero Posted 4 June 2009 Author Posted 4 June 2009 I'm tempted by the cottages. If you go four in and split the price, it's VERY reasonable. Week of walking and local pubbery.

The views at night were good, something that had never appealed to me until then
The People's Hero Posted 5 June 2009 Author Posted 5 June 2009 Right, let's cut to the chase. Who's got a cottage and how much do you want for it early September?
Zingari Posted 5 June 2009 Posted 5 June 2009 Right, let's cut to the chase. Who's got a cottage and how much do you want for it early September? i take it that you are aware that "cottage" is gay slang for a public loo ?
Finnegan Posted 5 June 2009 Posted 5 June 2009 i take it that you are aware that "cottage" is gay slang for a public loo ? Why do you even have this information!?
Zingari Posted 5 June 2009 Posted 5 June 2009 Why do you even have this information!? to be forewarned is to be forearmed
The People's Hero Posted 5 June 2009 Author Posted 5 June 2009 to be forewarned is to be forearmed Before getting 'foreskinned?' (assuming this is also some sort of gay term). I'm not going to end up with a nice cottage in the Peak District am I? I'm starting to wonder if I'm even going to get a public toilet with a randy gay man in it.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 5 June 2009 Posted 5 June 2009 You must go to Wastwater/Wasdale. Don't let the fact that it's just inland from Sellafield put you off. It's GORGEOUS, MAN
The People's Hero Posted 5 June 2009 Author Posted 5 June 2009 I'll be honest. I thought, whack it on Foxestalk and within hours I'll have offers of properties wherever and whenever, for free and with a dinner prepared on arrival. There has been some good advice though so thanks!

C-man Posted 5 June 2009 Posted 5 June 2009 Got details of the other two?Any with 2 doubles? Sorry mate, I was actually wrong. There's that cottage and then 3 flat-type things. Can't find a result for them though
The People's Hero Posted 5 June 2009 Author Posted 5 June 2009 Not to worry. Found lots of really nice ones. Just need the money now - and a couple to join us.
