Jay Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 It's been a week since Fez uploaded his (which I will review this weekend) so I thought I might as well get mine uploaded for those that are bothered!! I have tried to create a mix that takes you on a journey, has a start, middle and an end that is totally different from the start. I wanted to make something that flowed together and have used some songs that may well have been heard before including some old school classic tunes that blend together for the right result. Obviously this will be a vomit inducing collection to some posters, so buckets at the ready Mark!! Here goes... Jays mix 1 LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk is playing in my house 2 Your Twenties - Caught Wheel 3 Passion Pit - Moths Wings 4 Hot Chip - I was a boy from school 5 Neon Neon - Raquel 6 Heavy - Set me free 7 Curtis Mayfield - Superfly 8 Marlena Shaw - California Soul 9 Gil Scott Heron - The Bottle 10 Jurassic 5 - Lesson 6 The Lecture 11 Latryx - Say That 12 Black Star (Mos Def, Talib Kweli) - Definition 13 N.A.S.A (Ft Kool Keith and Tom Waits) - Spacious Thoughts 14 The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - Music and Politics Well Enjoy!!
Trav Le Bleu Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 I'm on it! Stuff there that I know I'm gonna like (though I think I've seen one I know I'm NOT gonna like! )
Guest Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 Black Star  Good call man I know a few of them and will be downloading later when I finish work.
StanSP Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 Not the best mix, but I REALLY liked Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem .

Joe. Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 Looking forward to this one Jay, I'll get it done within the next week hopefully. Just doing Granno's now, and then Fez's on Monday probably.
James. Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 AWESOME review! Typical of Pendulum fans really... Looking forward to this Jay. Hopefully do it tomorrow, it's downloaded and saved ready to go.
StanSP Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 Typical of Pendulum fans really... Hilarious. Nowhere does it say that a full comprehensvie song-by-song review must be done. Oh and saying I'm a Pendulum fan firstly isn't wholly true, and secondly has no relevance to this topic.

On the download. Black Star - Definition is a tune. My fav off that album is brown skin lady. Also @ James, Fox Forever pendustep fracas.
General Smuts Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 This looks very good! 1 LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk is playing in my house - One of my favourite tracks of 2005. MASSIVE! I didn't speak to the missus all the way from Nottingham to Hertfordshire because she forced me to watch Get Cape instead of this at Dot To Dot. 9/10 2 Your Twenties - Caught Wheel - Could only find a live version of this presented by Metronomy. But enjoyed it enough to click the link to thier Myspace. Found a brilliant home made video by them of it. Excellent! 9/10 3 Passion Pit - Moths Wings - I've said already today how much i love Passion Pit and Manners. This is another great track - 8/10 4 Hot Chip - I was a boy from school - Another MASSIVE song. One of my all time favourites and i know it actually is Fez's. 10/10 5 Neon Neon - Raquel - I love Neon Neon too. Doing very well so far. 8/10 6 Heavy - Set me free - S'aite - 6/10 7 Curtis Mayfield - Superfly - :D Classic! 9/10 8 Marlena Shaw - California Soul - 2 on the trot! Classic. I'm singing along still. 9/10 9 Gil Scott Heron - The Bottle - Really good that. 7/10 10 Jurassic 5 - Lesson 6 The Lecture - Didn't want to pick Jayou? Clearly a pre cursor to a lot of newer music. Brilliant. Will actually go away and download this. Even enjoyed the jazz flute breakdown. 9/10 11 Latryx - Say That - Unfortunately i saw the video for this as i had to find it on youtube. Oh dear. Shocking. Songs not that bad though i spose. 6/10 12 Black Star (Mos Def, Talib Kweli) - Definition - Fuck me that was great too! Just sent this to my mate cos he will love this. 1 2 3 .. this tune gets an 8 out of 10 from me. 13 N.A.S.A (Ft Kool Keith and Tom Waits) - Spacious Thoughts - Think i got the right song ... not bad this. 7/10 14 The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - Music and Politics - Didn't really like this one. 5/10 Started brilliantly. Had some brilliant classics in the middle and ended with some really good hip hop. Really enjoyed that. Brilliant. 8/10
Jay Posted 5 July 2009 Author Posted 5 July 2009 OUCH!! That Hurt... Every mix I have done on here has been totally different and tried to bring something different from my collection. done a Punk one, a Mo'Wax, Ninja, Major Force style one, another that was Reggae, Hip Hop, DNB and so on this mix actually started out as a Garage rock type thing with Fugazi, Jon Spencer, Husker Du and Mission of Burma but errr it changed a little in the process. At least you found one new song you like though so all is not lost..... that was from the David Holmes essential mix 98 cd a quality album and worth checking out

Like you said thats the beauty of music, everyone has there own thing.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 5 July 2009 Posted 5 July 2009 No need to be a tit about it. Just read your comments in the other thread, fair enough. Still reads badly to me, regardless.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 5 July 2009 Posted 5 July 2009 A tit? It's called honesty mate. Why should I lie and say that something sounds good when it doesn't. Cooko Cooko. Sorry if it was a little to x rated for you but if you don't like it thats your problem not mine. I happen to be passionate about my music as others are on here and this is a review so I complied and reviewed his mix. Whats the point in doing a review and lying that I like something just so that you can keep your dick cemented in the thread starters ass. Pleasure.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 7 July 2009 Posted 7 July 2009 Reviewing the ass out of it! 1 LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk is playing in my house I have the Soulwax remix of this, which I think improves it hugely. Not that this is bad, just not that great either. Let's try something I've never heard before - next! 2 Your Twenties - Caught Wheel This was a bit bland and the repetative guitar chords got on my nerves. 3 Passion Pit - Moths Wings Sounds like MGMT, which I said of a track someone else posted earlier. Why is it, in the wake of a band with a new sound you get a series of bands who either adopt the sound or new bands in that style? I could be doing them an injustice. They might have been around longer than MGMT, but this isn't too bad having said all that, but it's not a stand out, 4 Hot Chip - I was a boy from school Again, this I have and I like, but I wouldn't say it among Hot Chips better tunes. 5 Neon Neon - Raquel Hasn't someone already done some Neon Neon previously? This is pretty good, sounds bit 80s, could be a grower. 6 Heavy - Set me free It's a bit AOR isn't it? I'm not ready for AOR yet, my inner child is still going strong. 7 Curtis Mayfield - Superfly   8 Marlena Shaw - California Soul Nice little soulful ditty - which advert was this used in? So kinda familiar with it, but still nice at full length. 9 Gil Scott Heron - The Bottle This was the one I knew I wasn't going to like and guess what, I didn't. I tried, honest, but all it made me think of was this... 10 Jurassic 5 - Lesson 6 The Lecture I likee, but then I love this kinda hip-hop that J5, De La Soul, Dream Warriors, et al, do. 11 Latryx - Say That Too disjointed (and for long periods, very minimalist) for me 12 Black Star (Mos Def, Talib Kweli) - Definition No, this is not hip to the hop for me. 13 N.A.S.A (Ft Kool Keith and Tom Waits) - Spacious Thoughts Hehe, best part is the Tom Waits vocals - gotta love the guy! 14 The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - Music and Politics Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury is one of the greatest albums ever, but this is probably the weakest song off it. Having said that, it's probably the only track that does have some proper singing in it. To anyone who has never listened to this album, I urge you - DO SO NOW! ________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________ Thanks Jay, nice mixture of old and new, as always, some nice stuff there. Thanks!
Asha Posted 8 July 2009 Posted 8 July 2009 I'll review this now. Looks good, looking forward to the LCD Soundsystem and Neon Neon tracks. Most are new songs for me as well
Libertine Posted 8 July 2009 Posted 8 July 2009 1 LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk is playing in my house Was no way near as awful as I remember it. Hated it before but was alright. Minute too long. 7/10 2 Your Twenties - Caught Wheel "This was a bit bland and the repetative guitar chords got on my nerves." Ditto Trav. 4/10 3 Passion Pit - Moths Wings I kind of don't want to like these but I also kind of do. Wasn't amazing but I liked it. 7/10 4 Hot Chip - I was a boy from school Don't hate Hot Chip but I certainly don't love them either. Was okay. 6/10 5 Neon Neon - Raquel Intro bored me but I liked keyboard/synthy bit that came in about 1.30. Vocals were not for me at all. 5/10 6 Heavy - Set me free 6/10 7 Curtis Mayfield - Superfly Good stuff. 7/10 8 Marlena Shaw - California Soul Great track. 8/10 9 Gil Scott Heron - The Bottle Decent enough too. Bit long, but sahweet. Chilled innit. 7/10 10 Jurassic 5 - Lesson 6 The Lecture Pretty cooool. 6/10 11 Latryx - Say That 7/10 12 Black Star (Mos Def, Talib Kweli) - Definition 6/10 13 N.A.S.A (Ft Kool Keith and Tom Waits) - Spacious Thoughts No thanks. Some bits are good but that voice is annoying. 4/10 14 The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - Music and Politics Nice end. 6/10
James. Posted 11 July 2009 Posted 11 July 2009 Got to keep this brief I'm afraid Jay but was definitely looking forward to this so let's see what it's all about..! 1 LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk is playing in my house Very funky if a bit too long. Many if the tracks on my mix are over 5 minutes which is slightly worrying! 6 2 Your Twenties - Caught Wheel Liked this. Not really up my street but I'd listen to it again and would be tempted to investigate this lot further. 7 3 Passion Pit - Moths Wings Hard to know what to make of this. Kind of got a slightly psychedelic feel to it, think I like it. 6 4 Hot Chip - I was a boy from school Love Hot Chip but to my shame have not heard this track, probably because I got so into the first album I forgot to check anything else out. Classic Hot Chip formula in this tune. Not their best in my opinion but still a good track. 7 5 Neon Neon - Raquel Like I said in NSSL's review I have an album by these but have never really listened to it properly. Fits well with the last tune. I like it, just lacks meat I think. Either the bass or the drums need to be heavier. 6 6 Heavy - Set me free This is all fitting together very nicely. Even if no individual track has blown me away yet it's still an enjoyable listen cause it all flows very well. Decent track. 6 7 Curtis Mayfield - Superfly Like it. Not listened to much Mayfield, I'll have to put that right. Music with soul. 8 8 Marlena Shaw - California Soul Oh yeah! Obviously heard this tune so many times but never really knew who sang it. Love it. 8 9 Gil Scott Heron - The Bottle The revolution will not be televised. That's about the sum of my Gil Scott Heron knowledge! Another great tune though, you've chosen these funky ones well. Bout ready for some hip hop... 8 10 Jurassic 5 - Lesson 6 The Lecture Love J5. Love everything about them. Seen them live, blew me away. Good choice. 8 11 Latryx - Say That Familiar with these boys as well. More good quality hip hop, original, trying something different, refreshing. Good tune. 7 12 Black Star (Mos Def, Talib Kweli) - Definition Talib Kweli and Mos Def - what a combination. 8 13 N.A.S.A (Ft Kool Keith and Tom Waits) - Spacious Thoughts Like this as well. 7 14 The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - Music and Politics Nice end. Very nice end. 8 ======== Such a well put together mix CD. Flowed well, original sounds and finished well with some great hip hop. Unfortunately none of the tracks blew me away but as a whole it was a pleasure to listen to. I'll be digging out Black Star again, finding out a bit more about Your Twenties and Passion Pit and probably downloading some Curtis Mayfield as well. Good stuff. Overall 8
Joe. Posted 14 July 2009 Posted 14 July 2009 1 LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk is playing in my house This song doesn't even need reviewing from me (I still listened to it anyway) what with it being genuinely one of my favourite songs around. Definitely my personal favourite LCD Soundsystem track, thought it was brilliant from the first time I heard it. 2 Your Twenties - Caught Wheel Reminded me of the Beatles to begin with, very similar chord rhythms/patterns. Then it sort of comes into its own into something I really enjoyed actually. 3 Passion Pit - Moths Wings Already got this album (therefore this song), which I think is pretty decent. Although I prefer Little Secrets more, I think this is also one of the better tracks off of the album. Really liking the beginning of this mix Jay, probably due to the fact I already possess two of the three. 4 Hot Chip - I was a boy from school Again, Hot Chip are a group I've loved ever since Fez and co. introduced me to them a couple of years back. The Warning still remains their best album for me despite their newer efforts. 5 Neon Neon - Raquel I'm sure somebody else has put these on a previous mix before, and I remember enjoying that too. As for this one, it's definitely something I wouldn't object to listening to again, although ti doesn't particularly stand out as such. I liked it anyway. 6 Heavy - Set Me Free Moving onto some soul I see now, very nice. Quite liked this one, without it being anything to shout about. 7 Curtis Mayfield - Superfly Definitely heard this track before, quite possibly on an advert or something like that. Love Move On up, but never really heard anything else by him to be quite honest. Unsurprisingly I like this track a lot too, I can imagine that I'd like a lot more Curtis Mayfield if I bothered to listen to it. 8 Marlena Shaw - California Soul Again, definitely heard this on an advert before (KFC I think?). How can you not like this song? Got souuuul. Head movement and foot tapping in unison all around I'd like to think, lovely. 9 Gil Scott Heron - The Bottle Heard one of his previous songs (Home Is Where The Hatred Is) after it was sampled on a Kanye West track, so I was very biased with liking it really. Saying that though, this is brilliant too, even better than HIWTHI. Really nice way to end the soul element of the mix. 10 Jurassic 5 - Lesson 6 The Lecture Don't think I'd have guessed in a million years that this was Jurassic 5 if I had no title. It's just not them is it?! Didn't really do a lot for me, I'd have preferred a J5 song that actually includes their vocals really. 11 Latryx - Say That Yeah, not bad. Like the main riff running throughout it, but I wasn't as thrilled by it as the couple of hip-hop tracks on Fez's mix. 12 Black Star (Mos Def, Talib Kweli) - Definition Yes, big fan. Got a couple of Talib Kweli albums in the itunes so I'm already quite familiar with his work. I liked this particular song too, good little pairing with Mos Def and Talib Kweli. 13 N.A.S.A (Ft Kool Keith and Tom Waits) - Spacious Thoughts Already got this album too which I also really like, but I'd have picked a different track off of it. I love Soul Samba, absolutely brilliant. Still, I haven't got a bad word to say about this track in truth, it's still decent. 14 The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - Music and Politics A good ending to the mix here, brings everything together nicely. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- A very well constructed FT mix here Jay, very impressed. I partivularly enjoyed the soul aspect of it, and I'll hopefully listen to a bit more of Curtis Mayfield amongst others. I wasn't overly enthused by the hip-hop component to it, but the first two parts were absolutely brilliant. Cheers Jay.
Asha Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 I reviewed this ages ago, somehow forgot to post it. 1 LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk is playing in my house Like it. Lively. Good tune, heard it before now I think about it, but still good. 8/10 2 Your Twenties - Caught Wheel Like the intro on this, and the rest of the song lives up to the good start as well. Catchy tune, I like the vocals. 'Tis good. 8/10 3 Passion Pit - Moths Wings Not as good as first two, but still had something about it. Comfortable 7/10 4 Hot Chip - I was a boy from school Sounds really familiar, don't recognise the song title though. It was alright, probably could have done with being shorter than 5 mins though. 5/10 5 Neon Neon - Raquel ...always like a bit of Neon Neon. Another quality tune. 7/10 6 Heavy - Set me free Decent 6/10 7 Curtis Mayfield - Superfly Again this sounds familiar - sure I've heard it somewhere. With this, just seemed a bit bland. Nothing really stood out for me so 5/10 8 Marlena Shaw - California Soul I liked this, relatively short but nice. Another one I'm sure I've heard before without recgonising either artist or song title. 7/10 9 Gil Scott Heron - The Bottle Didn't do anything for me at all. 3/10 10 Jurassic 5 - Lesson 6 The Lecture ....erm no. Really not my sort of thing. Couldn't stand the constant interruptions. 2/10 11 Latryx - Say That I liked this a lot, didn't think I would tbh...but it's catchy and a bit different. 8/10 12 Black Star (Mos Def, Talib Kweli) - Definition This less so, not a hip-hop/rap (whatever this is ) man, so I was never gonna really enjoy this. 5/10 13 N.A.S.A (Ft Kool Keith and Tom Waits) - Spacious Thoughts 4/10 14 The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - Music and Politics 5/10 Some of them I was never gonna like, but again a couple of complete tunes to take away with me. Thanks for sharing Jay, and sorry about the posting delay.
