Jon the Hat Posted 8 July 2009 Author Posted 8 July 2009 Normal service resumes. Mind you this does not in fact constitute a rekindled interest. Ooops. Still, question is did we / should we have been in the bidding at that Price? £1.5M up front is a lot less that the £2.5M we were talking about. May not have got him anyway but you have to be in the running to have a shot.

May not have got him anyway but you have to be in the running to have a shot. I think Swindon screwed up to be honest and Im guessing we bid the same amount as WBA. I think Swindon tried to play us off against WBA by holding us to ransom but we weren't having any of it and when we pulled out Swindon realised that no one else was competing with WBA so they accepted the bid anyhow. Also I remember reading Cox showed a lack of ambition in joining us. Still this isn't a Di Matteo signing its a WBA chairman signing as they made a bid when they were manger-less.
Joe. Posted 8 July 2009 Posted 8 July 2009 Disappointed that we never took the gamble on him because I thought he'd do well here, but hey. Don't think he could have chosen a better team in the league to go to, likely champions for me. Therefore it'll be interesting to see how he gets on in a genuinely strong Championship side. Good signing for West Brom in my opinion.
Hugo Sanchez Posted 8 July 2009 Posted 8 July 2009 I wonder what we bid for this Cox ? I'm sure we must have been in the same price as West Brom. I thought he was holding out for his dream move to Celtic. Must have bid the old 1.2. Can see him being another Varney, Sharpe, McLeod, Eastwood.
Jon the Hat Posted 8 July 2009 Author Posted 8 July 2009 Well I guess we will know in about 18 months whether he can hack it at the highest level. Or in 6 months if he cannot in the CCC.
Bryn Posted 8 July 2009 Posted 8 July 2009 I thought we withdrew because we were outpriced? I'm fairly certain we'd have paid that. I think the lad would have chosen WBA anyway but even so, I'm surprised we completely dropped out of the race at that price.
Saladin Posted 8 July 2009 Posted 8 July 2009 Simon Cox has signed for West Brom for a initial £1.5m, which could rise to £1.9m according to SSN. LINK I think £1.5m for someone unproven at a higher level is a bit of gamble but who knows; he may turn out to be a gem and we'll be kicking ourselves this time next year..
BlabyFox Posted 8 July 2009 Posted 8 July 2009 Not bothered, we withdrew our interest in him ages ago.
Mort Posted 8 July 2009 Posted 8 July 2009 We just werent in a position to spend that kind of money on a player like Cox. Worth a risk for a club like WestBrom, but there was no point blowing nearly £2mil on a player unproven outside League One.
lefox Posted 9 July 2009 Posted 9 July 2009 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...ion/8124817.stm The end of the saga has arrived.. Who do we want instead??
fosse25 Posted 9 July 2009 Posted 9 July 2009 i would like lita here if he is still available would do a great job in championship and would do a job in the prem IF we got promoted again (fingers crossed)
Jay Posted 9 July 2009 Posted 9 July 2009 is it only me who thinks that it's very strange to sign a 22 year old football for upto £2million BUT only on a 2 year contract? I mean surely for a player of his age and potential you want him signed up for a lot longer than 2 years
breadandcheese Posted 9 July 2009 Posted 9 July 2009 Can see him being another Varney, Sharpe, McLeod, Eastwood. I don't know, I like this player and think he'll be able to cut it in the Chmpionship. I think that once West Brom became interested, he was never going to come to us. Like it or not, West Brom are a better club than us at this point in time with the parachute payments they have coming in and strength of their squad. Maybe in 2-3 years time, it'll be different.

I mean surely for a player of his age and potential you want him signed up for a lot longer than 2 years They have an option for a further 2 years. This means if he is crap they can let him go for nothing in 2 years, if say they were still sat in the CCC and parachute money was running out.
Legend_in_blue Posted 9 July 2009 Posted 9 July 2009 It's a little bit gutting not to be able to compete with the likes of WBA financially. We are 'bigger' after all. However, on the pitch we will show them who is better! Disappointed with it tbh, but we move on.
