Anorak Posted 1 August 2009 Posted 1 August 2009 Thought this might be worth a shot seeing as so many people who post here play football and how popular the Sunday league thread is. Half our team has left to join a new team that has started up and we are low on numbers. The team is Robert Hall Baptist and we play in Div 1 of the Leicestershire Church League. We play on saturdays and our home pitch is on the corner of Imperial Avenue/Fullhurst College just opposite the Roxy chippy. Players of any standard looking for a game with no hassle with a good set of lads would be welcome. We train at Fullhurst on saturday mornings at 10am. Link
Uncle Albert Posted 1 August 2009 Posted 1 August 2009 I played my first ever mens match in a Church league for Barrow Baptist when I was 14.
DB11 Posted 1 August 2009 Posted 1 August 2009 We play on saturdays We train at Fullhurst on saturday mornings at 10am. Possibly, but morningS is plural?
Maybes Posted 1 August 2009 Posted 1 August 2009 We play on saturdaysWe train at Fullhurst on saturday mornings at 10am. Possibly, but morningS is plural? I think you've read far too much into the situation DB11. You are right mornings is plural, maybe they are having more than one pre season training session
Gaffer Posted 1 August 2009 Posted 1 August 2009 I think you've read far too much into the situation DB11.You are right mornings is plural, maybe they are having more than one pre season training session He's missing updating his spreadsheets on our PS3 League is all
Anorak Posted 1 August 2009 Author Posted 1 August 2009 Not at all - i'm not for a start. Anybody would be welcome.
Ozwin Posted 1 August 2009 Posted 1 August 2009 What time's on Saturdays do you play? Because season ticket means that could be tricky. If it's mornings and I can find the place I may be interested.
Tomassi Posted 1 August 2009 Posted 1 August 2009 I would come along, but fairly new rules state that church league players cannot play for any other adult league on Saturdays and Sundays, and as i run and play for a Sunday League team, means i unfortunately cannot play! Once the Sparta era is finished i'll end up playing Church League, but if my local Church has a team i'll play for them
Anorak Posted 2 August 2009 Author Posted 2 August 2009 I think the league needs non-church players and younger lads want to play football as much as possible. The league rules may seem a bit draconian read in full but as long as a team doesn't start fielding over half a different side midway through the season of completely obvious ringers and become the best side in the league overnight..or act like the roughest pub side in Leicester then there shouldn't be a problem. We play our home games at 10.30am. Away games would probably be a mixture of 10.30 and 2pm ko times. One last thing, anybody looking at the earlier link (which now has another Robert Hall ad - not by me this time!) and wondering about the amount of games - obviously it's not a big league but we have a kickabout every week we don't have a game and extra games in the form of friendlies, a group stage cup format and hopefully county cup as well.
MPH Posted 2 August 2009 Posted 2 August 2009 One thing i used to enjoy about playing in the church league WERE some of the rules.... The players played with a different attitude... i never played in a game where someone was red carded didnt even hear of a red card being awarded although im sure they must of been. Its rare to get yellow cards, even.. People swore but kind of to themselves and there wasnt f this f that as have been in some of the leagues i have played in. No one was ever targeted and done a number on because he needed to be taken out of the game Basically i appreciated it because people in that league genuinely played the game in a good spirit. played hard, there were crunching tackles but always fair ... i appreciated that. I would encourage anyone who wants to maybe with a fried if you dont want to go alone, to get in touch with this guy and to go along to a couple of the training sessions ( usually on the suturdays when they dont have a game i would imagine... thats how we did it anyway) and maybe play in a friendly and just see how you find it. You certainly dont have to be a christian to play in the league but the rules do state that a prcentage of the players have to be church based players... the ONLY reason for that is to try and keep it so the game is played in the right spirit and the team doesnt develop a thug mentality... Now i know i didnt phrase that right but i think they want to keep the mindset on the game being played fairly and in the right way. You'll enjoy it.
Bert Posted 2 August 2009 Posted 2 August 2009 I used to play for Braunstone Evangelical, in my first season we won div 2. Then I kept on getting injured. Had some good battles against Robert Hall, know a couple of their players too. If you're looking somewhere to start playing mens football, the church league is very handy.

Thanks for that, that's a good overview of the league in my playing experience as well. The two extreme examples i chose before to highlight possible rule violations (multiple ringers & violence) would be frowned upon in any league really.
